And just to really run roughshod over Dan's thread :D....
here's how the evaporative separator is piped in one part of Oz for an FJ40:

And here it is again modified to suit the beaurocrats (I never could spell that word .... is it right ... who gives a shhh...t) in another part of Oz:

And here's the simpler BJ version:

Hope this helps....

Tom,

I have no issues with relevant information in this thread - heck, it makes me rethink everything I have done!

Has anyone dissected a fuel tank to see what/why there are three lines leading to the separator? Or for that matter which way the valve operates?

If the inline valve is in fact the return, I may have to revisit this and change the position of my return line.

Of note, I haven't had any issues what so ever with the current position of my return line - I'm amazed with the increased efficiency of this setup, its weeks between fill ups, I'm just waiting to fix my odometer to really see the figures.

Of course, Aussie bureaucrats have taken it to a whole new level today, where back then they merely idolised and envied the American bureaucracy. In true Aussie form, they punched above their weight until they outdid every other rational government.

Surely you mean "irrational government" Chamba?

But seriously, I bet we're in a worse state than you guys over there.

Our bureaucrats (and thanks for the spelling help ) appear to search every Aussi state for the most officious legislation they can find to add to our already-oppressive mix. (What state in Australia forces 40-series owners into costly/time-wasting 6-monthly roadworthy checks?)

And I wonder how the police-image held by my kids (now adults) was affected when we watched police pulling over and warning cyclists years ago for lack of safety helmets in a lazy little coromandel beach-resort where my :princess:'s parents own a beach house?

And not satisfied with their helmet-enjoyment-downgrade (of cycling), these narrowminded people now want compulsary hi-visibility clothing to be warn too.

And while I don't like smoking and certainly recognise its harmful effects and associated medical costs - the way we are tackling that is completely disproportionate to how we tackle other serious health issues.

For instance the workers in a metal plating factory here recently expressed fears about the chemical haze in the air they were breathing. So the authorities here, in a series of very protracted and incompetent steps, ultimately tested an air sample (using a private contractor because they had no equipment or qualified people of their own) for just one contaminant and went on to pronounce that worksite safe.

I ask you .................

(I'd better stop and go to work before I boil over....)

PS. Must remember to upgrade my signature line to include a link for people to sign up & join the mass-revolution I've got planned here in the shakey-isles.. :D

Could not agree with you more Tom. It is shameful what's happening under the Southern Cross in the name of safety. Bike helmets are but one of my bug bears....

You and I could likely polish off a number of pints whilst solving all the world's ills....and I bet Dan would join in.

..Hope this helps....

It most certainly does Tom - much obliged mate !

..The only real difference there appears to be the fuel pickup tube where the petrol model has the addition of a fuel-return tube that allows un-needed extra-fuel to splosh back freely into the top of the tank.

:hhmm: So if I manage to find one from an FJ45 I might be able to fit it from underneath the tub without having to drop the tank again ?

..I guess the line from that check valve is the one that opens out inside the LH chassis rail on a BJ-series?

Mine actually runs into the tub's 'cross member' but minus the check valve.I will fit it that way to see if it cures the occasional petrol wiff that I seem to get.If not I will look at plumbing in a charcoal cannister of sorts :hhmm:

Somehow I doubt you'd be that lucky Theo. (But you never know your luck.)

The part number is 77203-60020 subs 77240-60050 but it looks like it's no longer available from Toyota...

So from a wreckers it appears than any FJ4# tank from May 1979 to Oct 1982 should have it. (That's the date-span that the EPC spews out.)

Sounds like an excellent plan of attack Theo.

Ok so I fitted the check valve and left it plumbed the stock 'BJ' way. ...... aaaaand .... Drumrolll .....

Incab petrol wiff seems gone !

Been a while, time for a quick update.

14b is great, awesome to drive around town and also performs as expected up in the hills.

Time to fix a few shortcuts (to get it back on the road):

1) primary battery tray needs mounting.
2) mount p/s res
3) repair radiator support
4) blast/powdercoat

Work in progress. Getting things sorted to send for blasting and powder coat

Top and bottom (mock-up) radiator hoses might be sent to the UK so I can get silicone hoses made up.

Damn Dan: silicon hoses....too cool. Wish you'd done this while I was still living there as I would have loved to help. Be sure to rust-treat the frame and paint it while it's all clean. Any progress on the turbo? Has Lok seen it yet? What about Chris? They must be green!

Think that I have most of the stuff ready for the blasting.

I finally got around to dropping off everything to the sandblaster (not including the dog). It happens to be around the corner from Just Wrecking, and will be able to pick it up Thursday or Friday, to drop off at the powdercoaters.

I think I might spray some of the smaller parts like the bonnet (hood) release.

Where's the blaster out there? Are you stopping by Just Wrecking? Say g'day to Rod, Stu, Stevie and Kenny for me. Let me know what new 40s they have....

Glad you decided not to blast the dog.

Picked up the parts from the blaster - they did a really neat job, now I can really see some rust damage to the battery tray. At this stage, I'm not concerned, as I will get around to fixing/repairing at a later date.

So I dropped it all off at the powdercoaters, nearly fell off my chair when they rang this morning to tell me how much it was going to cost ($550 cough* cough*). I've given the go ahead for the bezel and bumpettes to be coated. I'll rattle can the rest.

Holy kaka Dan! Bring it here and we'll get 'er done for about $200.

What colour are you using for the Bezel and bumperettes?

That paint shop off the Parade can put any paint you want into rattle cans. If I were you, I'd spray it with an air gun though to get a thicker coat. Of course, were are just talking under-bonnet stuff....pay no attention to me.

Josh,

The bezel will be white and the bumperette will be grey. I decided that I'll get them p/c as they are external, all the under bonnet stuff will be satin black spray paint. I'll hopefully have them primed and first coat this weekend.

Before paint, I have to mock up the radiator so that I can check angles for the silicone hoses and new power steering line.

Dan,

Keep us posted on those hoses - I wouldn't mind ordering a set when I rebuild my 2F this winter.

Bear in mind during your muck ups that you will eventually drop a turbo in there. When I turboed my 2H they had to change one of the hoses for clearance - though I seem to recall that was a heater hose now that I think of it.

Has Loky seen your setup yet? He'll have some great ideas for your turbo. Should we get one here? There is a Saab 900 turbo at our local wreckers, Brian would probably sell the turbo off that for $50 if you and I pull it.

Josh

Josh,

Haven't caught up with the guys for a while - ill try to organise a catch up before I leave.

Hopefully I will have everything back together on the cruiser, but there's no rush as no one is going to drive it whilst we're away.

Once it's on the road I'll try to arrange a 40 run to do the border track - October long weekend is coming up!
