Hi Dan
What's the plan with the tub?
As in are you doing a tub swap or are you cutting the good bits out of this tub and fitting to yours?

Just spent another Sunday on my tub . You sure can put some hours into these things.
The car twirler thing O I brought works really well.
One of my better buys. Even my other half approves of this tool.
I have found small patches of rust up and under the cowl I would not have found with out it.
For your project it's the right tool for the job and sell when finished.
Keep the photos coming.
Cheers

Peter,

Good to hear that you've been able to spend time on your tub.

My plans are to use the FJ40 tub, as mine is a little too much work. I realise that there'll be a couple of differences between the petrol & diesel, but I should be able to make a clean tub out of both. The remnants of the BJ42 tub will hopefully one day become the tub of a trailer.

Hopefully I'll be able to drop it straight down to the sand blaster, and they'll have it on the rotisserie to access all those hidden areas, while it's there it'll get etch primed.

When it's home, I'll start on filling the holes, and re-prime, then apply the seam sealer.

Dan

Would you mind telling me the name of the sandblasting place? I presume they're in ADL?

Hi Dan
Make sure you you take some before and after photos.
Is there much rust in the new Tub?
Did I read your last post correct. You have found a bead blaster that will apply a prime coat after blasting.
What state you from?
I Looked around Brisbane for a bead blaster / walnut blaster company and only found one place that could help.
On the phone I enquirer when and how much only to be told to busy.
It was then I made the decision to clean and sand the Tub.
This turned out to be the right decision as 90 % of the original Toyota primer undercoat has been revealed in good condition.
I look forward to your next photos.
Cheers Peter .

Peter,
Not 100% certain on the amount of rust in the new tub! there was just way too much crap in there to have a good look! however from the inspection, it looks like there is minimal rust. The PO put on some pretty heavy (4mm) check plate on the sills, and lighter stuff (2mm) on the corners.

The blaster will either use sand or bi-carb, however the bi-carb will only take off paint and no surface rust. I'll wait until I pick up the tub and drop it off so we can assess and decide which way we will go. Price is not too bad, but bi-carb is twice the cost of sand.

Am in the nanny state (SA)

Hi Dan
The Bi carb is very cheap if it only removes only the paint as opposed to sand that can warp panels.
How will the Bi carb go removing the inside body tar?
I or should I say Nat took to mine with a hot air gun, scraper and citrus juice A days labour later all the body Tar gone.

South Australian hay.
I spent a big part of my life living at Crafers.
The cold weather got to me so I moved to Brisbane .
Cheers Peter .

I've been able to source and acquire a pair of late model doors with 1/4 vent glass. They're in fairly good condition, however they'll need to be stripped down and cleaned up. I've found Tom's (lostmarbles) thread on his doors, so I'll be following that tonight as I find time to remove all the door trimmings and window hardware.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/tackling-the-doors.370889/

Before reading that thread, I never knew that the OEM weatherstripping for the upper run was chrome plated. I've only seen the flexible bailey channel/flocking.

I'm going to have to start paying more attention.

Once I've done that, I'll send them down with the tub (I collect that next week) to the blaster. Hopefully when I get them back, there'll be time for filling holes and rust repairs.

Tom,

Are you sure about the chrome plated upper channel? I've looked again at the new doors (haven't had a chance to tear them down yet) and they too have the flexible bailey channel, which looks to be 30yr old.

Hi Dan

Well the chrome-plated stuff was definitely present on the doors of my 1979 BJ40 when I purchased it back in 1981. So it is definitely OEM for mine..

So that leads me to look at the EPC where I see my upper bailey channel (for W/VENTILATING WINDOW) is part number 98105-90301 (with left and right doors having the same part number) and I read there too that apparently this number ceased use in Sept 1979.

So I then look at all the production years for the BJ42 model (because I can't remember your production date and it's not in your signature line) and I get the same part as 68105-90303

So .... No... I am not sure you should have the chrome-plated stuff. The different part number could well mean that what you have there is indeed the original part for your production year.

We need the input of other BJ42 owners here I think to confirm this.

I think I've found the correct reference for my year.

Sig. updated :slap:

Correct. And 68141 leads to part number 68105-90303..

BTW.. Did you always have that signature line (with your cruiser details in it) or have you just added it. (I think I'm going mad LOL.)

Oh... You answered my question while I was typing// :)

Thanks Tom,

I took off down to our local rubber shop (supplier for RS I believe) with an off cut. We were able to closely match the bailey channel with some they had in stock. I was given a sample and have tried it at home, it may be slightly on the small side (depth) but it has the correct wall thickness.

The PO of the 55 gave me the weatherstrip kit he purchased (and had started replacing) only to find that the window would not slide up and down the channels.
A visual inspection of the original 42 and 55 bailey channel confirms that they are very similar. I'm hoping to confirm the sizing and then purchase enough to replace all bailey channels across both vehicles - I wonder if I'll get a discount?

Will post pictures later for comparison

Dan

Some photos of the worst replacement door - lots of screw holes to fill thanks to the check plate. Little bit of rust to repair on the bottom corner, will have a better look once it is back from the blaster.

If that's the worst of the rust then you've done extremely well in finding doors in such great condition Dan!!!

Bailey channel - comparison

I'd like to see if the OEM is available, as it is a little taller then the aftermarket, however, the shorter channel fits really good inside the frame, so it may be a good compromise.
