Low oil pressure after oil change?

Real problem is that the synthetic has less friction (is more slippery) than conventional oil. The oil return lines in older engines are larger to get the oil back down to the pan but when using synthetic the oil drains back faster than with conventional oil. At low oil pump output, like at idle, this shows up as low oil pressure. i had this in a Lotus twin cam engine when I changed to synthetic. It never hurt the engine over long time use. Oil pressure comes up when rpm and oil pump output increases. I wouldn’t worry about it.
I had a similar issue with my old XJ Cherokee, oil pressure fluctuated with the RPMs and the gauge was always bouncing around even after a new sender, harness etc.

Well shoot. Fresh 15w40 Rotella change, new filter and the pressure gauge hasn’t moved, knocking at the rear is still there.

No oil leaks, (just did the oil pan and have done about everything else, pulled the inspection cover and it’s dry) coolant is brand new a couple weeks back and bright green...I’m having a hard time believing that the oil sender or gauge stopped working at the moment I did the oil change yesterday. If I ground the sender wire it’ll jump the gauge all the way up to H so I’m going to assume it’s working correctly?

I switched to Mobil 1 15-50w (has the most zinc) about 9 years ago. My oil pressure did not change. My oil pan already leaked from the crushing of the cork gasket. I think it leaked a little more after the switch to synthetic. I am just now finally getting around to changing the oil pan gasket. 15-15w Mobil 1 has been very good to me. My Land Cruiser still burns zero oil after all these years. Total Mileage on mine is just over 100K. I switched to Mobil 1 at approx 67K miles. I am also still using the toyota 15600-41010 oil filter.

What is your source for the 15600-41010? I ordered some off toyotapartsdeal....but when I got the order confirmation I noticed it said I ordered that number but it had:

I saw the YZZD3 at the dealer and its not the big filter...its not the small one either..was sort of in-between size.

Oil pump pickup screen partially blocked/clogged? blocked oil passage, spun bearing. Its possible the synthetic oil change was just coincident timing to something letting go. If you stick a calibrated oil psi gage on there and rule out a faulty gage then perhaps pursuing the knock sound would be a good route to take. The knock might be an indicator of why your pressure is off.

Could be the oil pump itself is not up to par.

I don’t know what he did to ‘check’ my oil pump...but when I had but 2f rebuilt, my machinist made it a point to inform me that he checked the pump and it was working as it should.

Maybe something to check...but if it gets up to pressure at speed, I would agree with @ScottT and not worry about it.

I'll vote for a second oil pressure reading as well. Remember, the sender is a BSPT thread so be mindful of which fittings you use.

My oil pressure sending unit failed suddenly and i tripped out. It read low like yours. I was on a road trip and luckily had all me gear with me so i replaced the filter and topped off and it still read low.
When I got home replaced the sending unit and its all good now. Something to consider

Are OEM Toyota oil pressure senders still available? Mine reads lower than it has before, though not so low that it's causing worry. I'll be getting a diagnostic gauge on there myself hopefully before winter hits and if it's actually showing good pressure, look into replacing the sender.

Good thinking, I cleaned the pickup screen off with the pan gasket change, minimal sludge in the bottom of the pan. Going to go get a gauge kit, fingers crossed. Thanks for your advice!

Quote: "Just to verify, the connector clips on the middle of the sender, right? " If you ever connected the lead to the ground tab of the sender, you have smoked the gauge.........Don't ask.....
I did this. ^^^ Not initially, but with a low reading I'd thought maybe I had hooked it up wrong. Gauge went up to H and stayed there. What happened to your gauge?

Nice. Might go ahead and order one so I can get it done for peace of mind, along with testing for a legit reading at the same time.

@Seth S where did you hook up the diagnostic tester when you used it? The port for the factory sender?

Also for anyone who's pulled their sender, were you able to do it without draining the oil and pulling the filter or am I going to have to do that to avoid a mess?

Yes you can do it without draining the oil/removing the filter.

I've not used it on my 60 yet :) but I've used it on my other cars. You can pull the factory sender off and use the hole there, just make sure to use the appropriate adapter when setting up the gage.

After experiencing some rather erratic oil pressure readings on the dash guage (not associated with the dreaded “ground” failure), I purchased a new OEM OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT from the dealer and installed today. HOORAH...problem solved! The original unit lasted 31 years...certainly can’t complain with that extended warranty!

I had just finished a complete engine rebuild. It was dark. The LAST thing to hook up was the oil pressure gauge. I did it by feel. Put wire on wrong tab. When grounded, waaay to much current runs through the gauge and pegs it hard high, bending the spring. Tried to bend it back but never got it right. Running a real pressure gauge now. I have a new stock gauge on the shelf and will install next time I'm into the dash.
