He rewired the starter circuit and we replaced the starter on @Spallet ’s forklift which is on extended loan at my place. Which we put to good use this weekend…. but that’s another story and a new build thread I need to start.
It was off to the races, making brake, clutch, vacuum, and fuel lines all weekend.
I had to swap clutch accumulators with my 74 series, I didn’t realize it wasn’t a sealed unit and needed to swap the brackets. Now the 74 is leaking. Will fix.
We adapted the HDJ79 dual fuel filter bracket to the left fender well of the 79. It made more sense to keep it on the left rather than the passenger fender well. It saved running the fuel lines left to right to left.
This truck is set up with factory, dual tags and orienting the switching solenoids and making lines that accommodate them in a small space was a royal pain in the ass. We Staynered the bracket to make it fit on the left frame rail.
It’s worth another mention that the switching solenoid’s orientation and flow is as listed here:
@roma042987 and I have apparently both been chasing the same vintage Parker Aviation small diameter tube beading tools on eBay. Roma got a set and I randomly searched on eBay… And found my own for $209! Major score! It’s missing a couple of the mandrels, but there are companies making reproductions. It’s quite satisfying to use.
Note, the new reproduction tools are $759 for a set of four tools.

We are getting ready to do a 1HZ conversion on the Holy Truck, a Middle East 1FZ-F. On your setup--
Were you able to order a new bracket from Toyota? Also the Middle East diesels tend not to come with the pre-filter (at least I think it is a pre-filter--the little one anyways), but I have found them in the scrap yards off of AUS trucks I think. Do you know anything about whether the pre-filter is important?
Also on your main-sub tank switch gear, it looks like you have bought new parts. Would you mind listing the part numbers for what you are settng up?
Finally, someone said to me that the diameter of the fuel lines on the diesels is different than for the gassers. I'd welcome your comment on that.
John, all the part numbers are listed… About 40 pages ago!
The dual fuel filters set up is a narrow nose, HDJ79 that I’m choosing to use even though we really don’t need it in the states. Two filters is better than one. The fuel tank pickups are HDJ79.
I ordered almost all of this from Japan 4 x 4.
The FTE is a thirsty motor and uses 12mm inflow and 8mm outflow lines. I used 1/2” and 3/8” Nicopp for my fuel lines and 12/8mm German fuel hose (‘cause @rick_d told me to).
This is an ABS FZJ 80 front axle which had brake drop downs on both the left and the right. We stole a union off a rear 80 axle and Bill made new brake lines so that one hard line, dropping down from the right, will serve both front wheels.
@orangefj45 unknowingly donated a Roundup raffle prize to the garage. Bill cleaned up a bunch of drill bits….and made an actual space on the workbench to work!
That beading kit is petty sweet... Just for fun I went on Ali Baba and looked around. Smallest I could find was 16mm. But as usually seems to happen they seem open to making up something to order. They asked what sizes I would want so I asked our new robot overlords to do up a table and this is what came up for 70 and 80 series. Have no idea if it is accurate.
Here's the relevant bit of chat dialog:
If it is just a couple of hundred bucks I will probably order a pair of kits just to see what comes. I've had pretty good luck with the Chinese suppliers.
