The price of soft doors has gone up over the years. but I would still start with those but I'm a hoarder of all things soft top. The set of early bows I bought last year included a set of early soft door that a PO had cut down to half doors.

lol. i try not to hoard, i like the parts to be out being used, not just hogging space in my basement. plus, i wasn't planning on ever having a 40 again...they're just not practical. for top off, i have the 45 which also doubles as a pickup, and i only wanted one pig, but somehow i have two , plus there's pigheads, and an 80. ideally, someday, the 80 chassis will be under the 71 pig, the 75 pig will be gone, and i'll be that much closer to my minimal rig dream

actually, if i can just maybe borrow one hinge for dimensional comparisons (i work better if i can see a part and compare it to what i'm making). i was originally going for a set of soft doors i had an opportunity to get and was going to modify them, but i bought a baleigh tube bender for the bows, and it does square tube too, so i'm going to try to bend up the doors. if i'm doing that, i can do the welded up door hinge like the 25 doors. hopefully, i won't suck at it

Can't see myself ever being without a FJ40. I have eight of them now. Plus my FJ25s which are all soft top models. Only the one long wheel base pickup. A FJ62 then skipped the 80 series and bought a 100 series. I would get a 80 series of i thinned the herd but not sure when that will happen

Do you have any of the bows now or are you planning to do them all from scratch? Curious how this goes. Before I picked up a set off a 61 FJ40 I planned on making a set from for my early 40 soft top. But I planned on using all factory parts modified except for for horizontal pieces which run from the B pillar back. The later pieces are to short easier just use 3/4" conduit. What are your plans for the track on the B pillar and above the door? Those are kind of tricky. Hinges you are welcome to have back. I can never see me restoring enough cruisers to need them. Do you still need the clips for the bows?

i do need three clips for the bows. the bows will be from scratch, got a bender from baliegh sitting on the floor in the living room...will play with the tube left from the old husky top, then go to town with fresh tube. working on finding someone with a finger break to do the pieces above and behind the door. there will be a thorough writeup when i get to work.

then i may ponder the idea of getting some 1/4 square stock and making regular door frames. right now, i'm looking at rod for the frames (like a bestop softdoor).

If that 's the route you're going and finishing it like a bestop (wrapped around the frame) don't forget that Mark's dimensions are for use with the factory weatherstrip and channel around the perimeter. The bare frame is almost small enough to fit completely through the door opening.........you would need to make it bigger on three sides to fit well w/o the weatherstrip. Attached is a picture of an original frame with the weatherstrip channel and a bestop frame showing how much bigger it has to be.

And, just saying, the factory style window opening is horrible and really deserved the redesign. If you're making a door I'd make that window as big as possible. If I were to do it I'd probably go with a split window on a track sliding horizontally.

if i can find a someone to make the channel, i will, just dont' know that i'll be able to. i did notice in this pic how small the door is. anxious to get started. can't get over to talk to the tube guy until monday. also, the bender only comes with 3/4 and 1" square dies, so i need to get dies for the small stuff. but nothing says i can't make an oversize wrapped door now and a factory style door with weatherstrip when i find a way to make the w/s channel. two sets of doors is better than none

I think I would go the route the original of #16 in the count before going horizontal sliding windows. I would use weather stripping instead just screwing the Plexiglas to outside. I like to rest my arm on the door frame open when the window is open. But in the will probably just cover the original way and adapt to driving with the reduced vision. Not like it would be a DD in Phoenix.

My hat is off to you for making one from scratch. Something I would never attempt. Jim had some stock made for the frames around the doors years ago. I think he said the guy doing it would never do it again because all the tight bends were a pain in the a$$. Maybe some of those are still floating around. I know I have two of the four pieces somewhere.

another thing to add. thinking since we're going to wheel her and bench seats are a little slippery, i might want to add seatbelts but i only have one eyebolt, so need three of these

Ige Didn't you get me a hand crank bracket so we can reproduce them on my table? I know I need to get on the tail light brackets. I might be able to get my sheet metal fab guy to do the door/ soft top pieces!

yes, but i need the bracket that holds the crank handle when stored, not the one that the handle goes through when cranking
