Not a fan of the modern LED headlight look. I went Hella H4 headlights with led H4 globes from superbrightleds.com and couldn't be happier.

Nothing new here:
  • The Toyota kit is nice because you get new wiring and run current straight from the battery, controlled via relays
  • @RUSH55 may have been thinking of ignitors needed for HID retrofits
  • Morimotos are very nice. I did a retrofit on a non-cruiser and sourced everything from The Retrofit Source
  • As Nolan says - you need the proper lens and housing, don't slap LED inserts into a lens designed for incandescent bulbs
  • Angel eyes w/ switchback fcn for turn signals are very cool. Some of them can be set up to run as daytime running lights which are a great safety feature in certain light and weather conditions.
What I do have for you that is new - after you try some new lights, or even now w/ the old, aim your headlights!!! It makes a difference. Sometimes it can make a big difference. Do it for two reasons - maximize the light output for you, and minimize the light you are shoving into oncoming traffic.
Here is a short and sweet video on aiming.
The say to put the height below the side-view mirror of a common sedan @ 25', that would probably be ~36".
The other school of thought is to set the 25' beam height to the actual height of the center of your headlight off the ground.

Out of little more than idle curiosity, would our pigs have originally come with sealed beam units or semi-sealed with replaceable bulbs? I assume semi-sealed. Here are part numbers that pop up for a 1977 which show both for US market 55s.

I would guess sealed, as my Pig still has a set of sealed Kiotos.
Just a guess though.

I really like the Koito H4 kit @cruiseroutfit sells, it’s super cheap and you can put whatever fancy bulb in them you want and they still look stock.
This is exactly what I'm currently trying to do, but I'm not sure which replacement to choose. I kind of want something that's not going to be such a cool color temperature as all the LEDs I see are. It makes it look so different.

Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for specific LED H4 replacements to use?

TIA

Others might know better than me but my understanding is that you need a housing made for an LED bulb to use an LED bulb. Otherwise you get all kinds of glare and otherwise unusable light. I could be wrong but I don't think @tucker74 was referring to LEDs when he said "fancy bulb".

Right. That makes sense. I am new to the LED replacement game.

I don't love the bright blue cool LED options that seem to be ubiquitous. Assuming I can't just buy a random H4 replacement that fits my taste, are there any FJ40 fit options out there that aren't cool blue?

I'm hoping to find an option that matches a Halogen with a filter at around 3500k, but anything between 3.5-5k would probably work.

Why not just buy the Koito headlight upgrade kit and install it as is? I put some in my wifes pickup and they work great!
I would start with this. ^^^

Also, aim your headlights properly!
You will be amazed at what a difference this can make!
All you need is a level surface, about 25' to a clean wall, some painters tape, adjustment tools, and prob ~30 min to just adjust/look/adjust again...
