Today I saw my first GX550 in the flesh. It was Atomic Silver with black interior. Thought it looked amazing. Got to sit in it too. Just about the perfect size SUV for me. Reminds me of my 80, not as big as our 200. This probably is in our future.

I continue to see similar comments about the size of the 200 vs. the LC250/GX550 and I just don't get it. They are almost identical in overall physical dimensions.

At least according to Edmunds the 550 is slightly longer, but same width. I've parked the 200 next to a 250 and was expecting the 250 to be diminutive and it wasn't at all.

Interior space, however, is slightly smaller. Some of this may be from side impact crash standards. Others may be due to trim / ergonomic changes.

My 200 looks huge compared to my LC250.

Sit in both and its easy to feel the difference in interior width between the full size 200 and the Prado/GX line. 2-3” makes a big difference in a single seat.

Reminds me of flying main cabin vs comfort+.

Do you think a 285/70/18 can fit? It would be 11.2" wide vs what you have at 10.8" wide.

I wouldn’t run 285/70/18 since it would be so close to not fitting in the spare diameter wise. I also wouldn’t want the extra width hanging down in the rear impacting ground clearance and departure. My 275/70/18 KO3 is up against the hitch in the rear and has about 3/4” gap from the panhard bar. You would have to modify the two spare brackets before you could use much if any of that 3/4” though. The brackets are welded so they’d need some cutting. Not worth the trouble imo.

When the rear tire was stuffed at near full flex, I was surprised there wasn’t more space. Can’t remember where but I saw people saying the rear has plenty of room for larger tires. Seemed close to me especially since it was not moving.

I have not noticed any rub anywhere with the 275s. Haven’t had it really loaded down on a rough road yet though.

Thanks for the reply. I will go with the 275/70/18 size as I don't want to cause problems. Going to do new wheels too. These are still so new most people don't know what sizes work yet. I get mine next month hopefully.

Have you guys tried deflating? As an example, I can fit a 35 under the Ram, but only if I take it down to about 5 psi. It buys you about 1/2-3/4" in outside diameter, or about half of that in radius.

With the 34" being a really good all-around size to run, I would be great to figure out a way to get one in there. Having had swingout rear bumpers before, they become tiresome. You could also run a slightly smaller spare and bring a comprehensive patch kit as your primary fix. The rear is locking and not a limited slip, correct? So you could run an off-size spare for a short while in an emergency, though ATRAC and VSC might get grumpy.

You can absolutely use a slightly smaller spare to get you to a tire shop. It's no different than using a donut in a pinch (actually better). I wouldnt use it much longer than that though. There have been a number of people fitting 285s at full stuff without issue, though mostly not on the stock wheels that I've seen. I plan on doing 18s with a 40 offset and 285/70R18s. If my 250 ever gets off hold that is.

I'd have no problem running something close or the biggest I could fit in that location, but having a slightly smaller spare to get you off the trail is not a big deal. In reality, with a little skill, you should be able to plug the vast majority of flats encountered. I haven't put a spare tire on in the past 20 years and both of my LC's have at least 2 plugs in their tires at the moment. And truth be told, I'm running plugs where tire shops say it can't or shouldn't be done. I've had zero issues doing so. I'd much rather put in a plug than deal with the ass pain of a tire shop giving me the BS story of why they need to sell me another tire.

For reference my spare is at 33 psi. ymmv with deflating. :meh: I like having the piece of mind that my spare can take me as far as possible.

I’ve had to change a stock tire at 1am, after packing a bull elk out I got at 7am, at the top of a mountain road, for my pregnant wife that came up to help tear down camp. That was the end of trying my luck with stock passenger tires.

I haven’t changed a BFG KO2 (Load Cs and Es) or even plugged one yet *knock on wood.* I’ve popped 4 stock tires over the years. Only able to plug one of them. Murphy’s law makes me hesitate to run an oddball spare.

Deflating is the logical answer but only if you also have on board air to inflate when needed.

I get it, but the 200 "feels" bigger than the GX. When parked next to my 80, the GX550 looks very similar in size and stature. the new GX is substantially bigger than the GX460, which i drove for a week prior to getting the 550. I need to park the GX next to our 200 but haven't had a chance yet
