@95Fantasma80 are you saying the cybertruck capability is unquestionable? If so I disagree, at least until we see some suspension performance metrics.

Interesting you mention soul. That has been one of my counterpoints to the abundance of fanboys towing the Tesla line. I’ve never questioned Tesla’s place in the industry.. frankly it’s good for automakers as a whole to have someone competent and boundary pushing to come in and mix things up. The thing is.. I went to an adventure motorcycle rally years ago and got to check out a bunch of new Ducati’s up close. They absolutely ooze passion. Soul. Whatever. There is nothing clinical about the way they are designed. I haven’t had the benefit of crawling all over a Ferrari but I have to assume it would be similar.

Others may disagree but this is what I think is missing in the Tesla’s I’ve driven and checked out. It’s hard to explain.. but even if I knew a M3 was slower on a track, I’d rather have it than a model 3 if track driving was the goal. And partly because it can go all-out for a few laps in a row. Even with German cars not being known for “soul”.. they still have more than the Tesla’s I’ve experienced, and to me when the goal is to enjoy the driving experience that means a lot.

Now as a DD.. as an appliance... I could actually see owning a 3. But not a cybertruck, not at all.

35" tires, 16" ground clearance, depart/approach angles almost meeting a jeep? that's nothing to scoff at. It also has an awd system which yes i agree, we need to see how it performs but so far looks like no slouch.

My theory (and I’m no hater...)
Y’all have been punked by Mr. Musk.

I think Musk is playing a very public joke here and has no intention of the eventual design visually resembling anything even close to this funky, square-cornered rear or over-all sharp-edged paper unicorn (go watch original Blade Runner to understand paper unicorn reference). ;)

I think he did it *because he can*...and will eventually reveal something DRASTICALLY different.

Major tell:
-His sloppy “armored glass” demo was a hint.
When Musk is serious...he is *anything but* sloppy in design presentations. So with his comical armored glass debacle.... There is NO WAY he would have just had some bloke throw a ball at—and SHATTER—the windows during the big reveal if he were actually serious.

As for an actual rear end, NOTHING about sharp, squared corners works well in a wind tunnel...and he knows that all too well.

As he said... He loved the funky cars in the original Blade Runner flick. He’s having fun...

GENIUS part:
He got the entire planet talking about a Tesla truck with this stunt.

So anyway... At least as far as visually...
—**I think ALL the world should consider itself officially “punked” by this little Elon Musk diversion...and should look forward to a VERY different look in the future whenever the real Tesla truck actually shows up on stage.

ih8mud Challenge:
I’ll wager a case o’ chocolate milk that this thing will someday be *laughed off* by Elon M when he finally does show off the actual article !

It will have improvements and some design changes but to drastically change it's preproduction look is an easy gamble I'd be willing to take for the chance at scoring a case of yahoo chcoloate milk.

Ha! That’s the chocolate-milk spirit!

I have no doubt he is somewhere fairly down the line with ideas underneath. I just think he decided to have some goofy, external, body-work fun here.

Go read the PS. section I added to my other post...
There’s a pattern of funny stuff he does...just because he can. :p

Madd scientist or loaded shyster? Time will tell but he certainly has moved the goalposts as they say. It will be interesting to watch the development of hydrogen vehicles as well and how they integrate into the mix. Back to the original subject, somehow things will be far different when the Geek Squad has to be called for a disabled vehicle on the Rubicon. Thank God the Paris to Dakar will be safe for another 10 yrs or so. The next 5 years is going to be very interesting.

It's Toyota/Lexus that has a design problem.
Judge for yourself...

Musk definitely deserves credit for his business successes, not to many self made billionaires out there, my hats off to him for that. However, his recent behavior has been increasingly bizarre IMO, and not very funny. Remember the Thai cave crisis? Remember how he was going to send a submarine to rescue the boys? Then he publicly calls the guy who actually helped a pedophile. Overpromising on Tesla? It's a fact. He was famous for telling fairy tales during quarterly analyst calls. And how about that unveiling, what a fiasco. He "promised" us bullet proof glass then broke the window twice.....publicly. Can you imagine any major car company screwing up like that during a new model introduction? I cant. A professional outfit would have tried that stunt backstage before going live with it. I could go on, but wont. My biggest problem with Musk is his penchant for feeding off the public money trough since his PayPal success, both with SpaceX and Tesla. If someone wants to buy a Tesla, please do....but absolutely none of my tax dollars should be donated towards the process.

Stats aside, this thing is hideous. When I look at what I would legitimately use a truck for, I couldn’t even fathom rolling up to a horse show or hunt in this with the oversized Clydesdale trailer on the back. I would be mortified. Hopping in and out in muddy boots, checking fence, toting hay, grain, lumber, dead beasties? Nope. Not in this. I’d rather have a $1000 beater.

And while I abhor the over abundance of tech in automobiles these days, because I'm secretly a grouchy, cynical 80 year old in a younger package, I do like following the progress of EVs and other alternative fuel vehicles. Even Cummins is getting in on the action.

That's Bolingers target audience with their B1.

It may do 0-60 in 2.9 sec, Tow 13,000# with a range of 500mi but without that thirsty V-8 growl it is simply a low-T appliance.
:worms:

Here's a 1970 Ford Mustang concept car. The Mustang Milano. Look familiar?
Remove the grill (not needed for electric), crease the curves so there's only angles, stretch it out a bit & add a bed, and swap the gasser for electric motors & batteries.
Voila- The Tesla Cybertruck.

The only commonality I see between that concept Mustang and the Cybertruck is that both have four wheels.

I'm not going to judge it off of looks. But dont think it's a practical design for a pickup in its overall shape. The cargo area is restricted to the point its almost useless by design. It would have much bigger blind spots than the fj cruiser. Thus why I've never owned a fj. I dont see any bumpers. Mounting a ladder rack or roof rack would be awkward. Unibody construction makes it hard to take seriously as a 4x4. You would have to tow a trailer with it in order to use it for anything other than a Honda ridgeline type purpose. Stainless steel is cool. I think electric could be good for farm use and for landscapers that work in suburbs or plumbers etc. But the body design makes it impractical for that. Personally I think it's a swing and a miss. It goes so outside of the box that its outside of most people's actual needs in a truck. As far as offroad, I've never driven a electric 4x4 so I can't say. Having driven some electric vehicles in the cold a few times only, I'm concerned how much range is reduced. It seems to be a lot. I would be a bit scared at every water crossing with electric. That's a lot of volts and amps.

Give me an electric Raptor...Game over

Using the heater in a Tesla effects mileage but how far will it go after it uses a winch? Clearly there are a million details to be worked out but if you don't start you will never finish, meanwhile it's providing forum fodder.

Solution to the horrible drone of the ecoboost raptors is.. no engine noise.

I heard one the other day and sounded ok. The Raptor pipes in artificial sound which seems really stupid. I would hope they allow you to delete that via a menu option or something simple. Having a weaker sounding “quieter” exhaust doesn’t bother me, so long as it has great performance and better fuel mileage.

A friend I camped with this weekend ordered one. Neighbor also ordered one. Both ordered full monty 500 mile range versions. Neither own Tesla's today. One owns a full overlanded FJ. Another owns a late model Range Rover. They're as excited for the features as much as the styling.

Along with 146k other first day orders, maybe something different really is what the market wanted.

I did find this video of an early prototype. Really shows off the off road capabilities.

Seriously, Musk has shown the kind of vision it takes to see around the next corner where most people dont. PayPal, Spacex reusable rocket stages, Tesla. If you consider yourself a car or truck person and havent test driven a Tesla, you need to. They accelerate like a belt sander and are so simple compared to internal combustion vehicles. The only thing that stopped me from seriously considering one is the driving range and the lack of supercharging stations on my most travelled routes (Austin to College Station and Houston.) I imagine the stress of running the a/c full blast in the texas heat and what that would do to the range/battery life. Then I imagine making my typical road trip if there were no gas stations and I run away screaming from the Tesla showroom. I did experience being on the road in central TX after Hurricane Harvey, when most gas stations were out of gas. That would be a constant fear with todays Tesla lineup.
