What's the current cost of the Kaiser locker and who sells them now in the US?

How will the Kaiser differential work with ABS? If the tires lose traction say on ice will the ABS still be able to control the slide to the same degree as with open diffs??

It will work like any other auto locker. Even though the mechanical design is different, it functions the same way. One wheel can turn faster than the ring gear, but neither can turn slower (eg. lose traction).

No. If a tire loses traction, that side will lock and rotate the same speed as the side that has traction. This makes it more likely that both wheels will lose traction if you apply power on ice or low traction surfaces. ABS doesn't deal with both sides losing traction.

Ok. Does this mean that (with an ABS equipped 80) if you replace either your open diff or E-locker diff with Kaiser diffs you should disable the ABS, like what happens automatically when we lock the center diff??

Any updates on these things???

Interesting option. Too bad about the price level.

Hopefully jt can get his hands on some! Maybe we could get a group buy going

There is an install article on these into a 40 in the latest Toyota 4WD owners mag.

have chance to post it here ...?

Well... For me it is still working perfectly! :grinpimp: So easy to use even the :princess: can do 2 wheel stands! Now my only problem is to stop her from flipping the cruiser!
Seriously, Could not be happier with how it works!

I know it's an old thread but I'm here letting people know I have installed them in my latest 80 front and rear.

So far on road the seem yo run real smooth with an occasional knock but that has been becoming less. I did gears at the same time and I need to swap out the oil which might help.

Under heavy acceleration off the line while turning the front wheels tend to pull straight. Not real bad and once you know it's there it is easily avoided.

Letting off the gas while accelerating through a turn at speed will cause the rear locker to relax and the back end of the truck will feel light.

Not a lot of off roading but the truck seems to do real good.

another update, As I started driving it more it came apparent that they would not want to unlock smoothly after a good pull such as climbing a hill. And when they did it was with a loud clang.

Kaiser says they are made to run on standard gear lube and I'm going to call BS on that. They really started to bang and clang a bit.

I did some digging on the web and it would seem that these roller type lockers are subject to that. Other manufacturers in the past had issues and it came down to having the proper friction coefficient in the gear lube. Under load the rollers will wedge them selves in place and actually disperse the gear lube when under that kind of pressure. It is at this point when there is some rotational difference and the roller wants to release that it is stuck and needs to be forced out. This is where the noise ifs coming from.

So with some research I took a WAG (wild ass guess) and bought two gallons of Swepco 212. It's a mulit-grade gear oil with Molybdenum and an EP packet. EP stands for Extreme Pressure. My choice was loosely based on the fact that we need moly in our front birfs other wise they tend to pop.

Due to the nature of the design it takes some time for the lube to migrate into the parts of the locker and there is the need to do more than just drive to work it into the rollers as they need to roll back and fourth.

At this point it seems to have done the trick. I can actually feel the steering to be a little lighter and the torque steer has lessened.

We had 5" of snow last week and I found an un-plowed parking lot. The snow came down wet and it froze overnight so it had an icy texture to it but collapsed when I drove over it. I have to say the turning ability was amazing. I turned the wheel to full lock and got on it and the truck just chewed through the stuff in a nice controlled circle. My last truck had e-lockers and with the front unlocked it would sit and spin and when locked it just went straight ahead.

Next storm I'll try and get some video to show you what I'm talking about.

Who sells these in the US and what is the part number?

So the Kaiser lockers will fit into any FZJ-80 without factory lockers?
