It must just be an optical illusion. My bench cushion looks much wider than yours but also measures 27". I would like to see detailed photos of your cup holder solution when you are done.
Thanks.... :)

I'll post up plenty of pics of the center console cup holder setup once we get there....just not sure when we get there might be...

We'll see if what I have in my head is what is actually what the end result will be. I'm going to use 2 of those 79 series cup holders(oak colored of course)....since I have the auto trans in mine, I have a few obstacles to deal with...a couple of small boxes for trans stuff, a wiring harness(the 80 series crosses over the trans hump, mine does too but we gutted out the power seat wiring, the rear blower, etc), heated seat switches, etc. So in addition to hiding a few things...I need to cover up the transfer shifter hole too...it doesn't match up to the cut out that was there for the 5 speed. All of it's pretty basic, I just want it to look right and of course have a couple cup holders.

I really need to update my reading glasses prescription..... Every time I viewed this thread all I ever noticed was the manual shifter sticking up out of the transmission tunnel.
It was not until your last post that I realized you are installing an auto gear box.

Our days of progress are coming to a close....we're really close to rolling this thing out. Had to do some work today on the intermittent wiper setting...merging the 80's variable speed intermittent system into the very basic 79's off-int-low-high was a challenge but my expert tech made it happen. Finished all the wiring in the engine compartment...everything is in looms or wrapped with Mercedes Benz cloth tape...we even wrapped some of the plastic looms with the cloth tape...looks very, very clean. Installed the air cleaner, washer bottle, battery, etc. for good. We will only have to hook up the heater core lines and that's it(they're bypassed now as we didn't have it in when we started the truck).....probably won't do that until we've driven the truck to make sure the harness/dash doesn't have to come out.

We spent a lot of time on the dash cluster and I'm pretty proud of it. We built very cool indicator lights....check engine, ABS, center diff lock, cruise 'on',parking brake....the 79 series had maybe one of these(parking brake)....we had to make the rest. My vinyl guy printed out the logos...we stuck them on some rigid plastic(very thin) which is kind of like what Toyota uses. We found that we had to diffuse the light bulb behind the lights(you could see the bulb behind the logo) so we used white plexi inserts to accomplish that. I installed colored LEDs to help brighten the colors...the lights look great. Not exactly factory but very, very good. We're going to tweek a few things tomorrow on it....the pics suck, colors are much better in person. Need to work on getting the light dispersement in the cluster a tad bit better....not a huge deal. The LEDs are great color-wise but they don't have the exact same beam pattern as the 194s...again, I think it's all stuff we can mess with and dial in.

Check out that mileage...000000

Thanks Beno....the diff lock switch we got from you looks really slick in that 70s series dash and allowed me to illuminate our light for 'testing' purposes(I played with it for about an hour...I mean tested it for about an hour). We've been getting a huge kick out of seeing if the lights are going to light or not with various systems we bring on line.

Or getting a huge kick out of seeing if everything works or not!

Glad I can assist in a small way.

:)

I plugged in that CDL switch today and pressed it....when that little icon lit up on the cluster, my reaction to it was probably similar to the first time man saw fire. Followed by the same reaction when the cruise control icon lit up. I'm easily amused I guess.

Andrew had to stop me from "testing" of the CDL switch because he was trying to listen to the motor running for the wipers on intermittent...couldn't hear it over me pressing the button and the CDL engaging...lol.

Do you happen to have any more info on the thermshield product u used above the cat? Is that something an average consumer can purchase?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using IH8MUD

intially i read this as "my reaction was similar to the first time i saw A man on fire."

I thought dang, i don't even think i've seen a man on fire, then i reread.

I used 2 different heat shield products...the inferno shield from these guys was used in the fender(installed very, very close to the downpipes):

http://www.heatshieldproducts.com

And this style one from Vibrant(used as a "U" and installed between the frame/body and rocker where the cat/exhaust runs down the passenger side of the truck)....:

http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1022_1355_1356_1359&products_id=2367

The Vibrant one is a pretty robust piece....it's has a foil wrapped foam piece that is encapsulated by 2 layers of aluminum...one is a heavy gauge piece, one is a lighter piece. The lighter piece has bumps on it that aid, I would guess, in creating an air gap or aid in increasing surface area. They tell you which way to put it depending on where it's mounted...bumps facing towards the exhaust or towards the body.

It's incredible what that did for the truck....the heat that radiates downwards is intense. It's actually very, very similar to any of the heat control materials we see on the high end cars we work on in the shop....they generally do a great job in controlling heat in very tightly packaged modern performance cars.

Reached a MAJOR milestone today....truck drove out of the shop under its own power today! Actually drove back in too...granted the total round trip was about 50 feet...it was still pretty cool to see it outside. No pics though so maybe it didn't happen.....

Finished up the week pretty well on the truck.....bed secured, rear and front wiring harness sections fully done and installed, front bumper brackets built, cab bolted down, 2 flares installed....probably a dozen other things too.

Front feder flares are proving difficult to install. Either the little clips don't want to be in the flare and inserted into their holes on the fender OR they don't want to be installed in the holes on the fender with the flare attaching to them. Will have to sort it out on Monday. They look cool though.

is there something off / missing from the front flare / bumper perspective ..?

Dude .. and for the hole project, you would make those Jap engineers jealous .. !

1978HJ45.....I'm thankful that this build has a built in 'trashcan'....that bed is great to keep everything in one place. I have 4 MAJOR builds going on in the shop so all my space is occupied right now. I believe next week the 'trash' will be moved to a new home...i want to drive her down the street.

Thanks for the kind words Bomar and Tapage. It's been a fun build doing it for me the way I build cars for my customers. The missing part from the front flares is a little piece that attaches to the edge of the bumper to blend the flare into the bumper. The lower mudflap is off too...that finishes out the bottom of the flare.

Not sure I'll add the filler pieces....I have a suspicion that we'll be building a custom winch bumper for the truck.
