Builds Just another 79 build.....

It's a good possibility.....I'd feel bad if they didn't. Won't go out of my way to find it though....

Bring it up to South Georgia and we can break it in on some of the local clay based dirt roads. :)
A good coating of red dust will protect all of the metal surfaces.

Productive week on the truck...hope to post some pics next week. Got the AC lines mocked up(got kind of lucky on running them...I had a bunch of different ones to mix and match AND we have a really solid AC shop around the corner with a master AC fabricator).....should have them on Monday or Tuesday. Need to do a little work on the radiator shroud but we have that figured out....we had to cut part of the one I'm using away to clear the fan blades, need to recreate the plastic section we cut with aluminum....kind of tricky as it is a pretty complex shape. I think we'll finalize the supercharger plumbing and wiring next week too....we've got it about 50% done. We're routing things a little differently due to the nature of what we're building and I want it to look clean. Exhaust will be done at thermal coat so it can go on.....looking forward to seeing it. Should be a fun week.

Small accomplishment from last week

What was that cap off of?

Sent from my phone using IH8MUD

It was off eBay actually.....not sure if I have the bag it came in with the part number. I see it listed all the time.

If u find the pn i would be interested. Looks nicer than my retrofit 60 series one.

That looks like a regular FJ40 fuel filler cap.

That said, beautiful build and beautiful chronicling for those of us who would love to have a truck like this as well.

In terms of the double cab--you can buy one, you can bring one in to the US but you probably won't be able to drive it. If you bring it in for educational and or museum purposes, you can bring one in. But it will never see the street (at least no legally).

Or you can buy 5 or 6 and have the USDOT destroy 5 of them to allow you the 1 you want.

Opened up the one box I wasn't looking forward to opening up....the dreaded wiring harness box. What a mess. It's going to be a big job but I think we'll figure it out. Fuel pump harness was cut on my harness...only $12 from Toyota....a nice surprise. The rest of it looks pretty good. Kept it laid out today so we could get an idea of what's going on. I think the sheer size of what will be kept is going to be the hardest part of the whole deal....not a lot of space behind that dash for the keeper wires.

Going to start by getting the engine ECU mounted....figured out it will be placed on top of the glove box liner. Perfect spot.

Mock-up AC lines....not the prettiest but they got the job done for us. Hopefully new lines tomorrow....I'm sure they'll look a little better.

Looks like the remains of one of those robots from the original "Transformers" movie. Remember if all else fails you can always use shims and duct tape. :)

I think the young gun in the shop used copper welding filler, electrical tape, copper tubing from the brake/fuel lines and pieces of the OEM aluminum AC lines to put it all together....lol. I'll give him a passing grade for ingenuity but a failing grade for looks. I'll be shocked if they all turn out OK....hopefully we'll see them today.

Just got the forward pieces of the exhaust back from thermal coat....downpipes and cat-pipe that will go under the cab. I didn't bother thermal coating the muffler portion of the exhaust as it is fully under the bed.....seemed like a waste. The rear section around the gas tank will be done in the AM....we'll mount it all up today I think and then it's back to pondering the electrical stuff.

Downpipes installed....

Couldn't help myself from buying nice and pretty new little clamps...ordered a dozen which resulted in an order of kit with about 80 so I can replace everything...I'm out of control. This is the line that runs from my charcoal canister to the tank....we had to relocate the canister to the passenger side....hard lined it over with the purge line and the brake booster line from the relocated throttlebody...3 nice lines running across the back of the motor. Clean, clean, clean and we haven't even cleaned it yet.

Few pics from this week.....my assorted spring clamp selection, a pretty new custom AC line and the eventual home of the new trans cooler.....found out the truck did not have the brace that supports the hood latch(installed it yesterday) so I ordered one....it's in the US so it should be here early next week. Kind of amazing(to me at least) just how many parts are in the US for this truck...pretty cool to get them thru my local dealer too.

Great build. I love it.

Isn't the reason you can get parts is that Toyota was smart enough to engineer parts to fit many different vehicles, right? I may be wrong.

The parts I'm finding/needing are specific to the 70 series......my guess is and I'm sure that somebody knows better, I would think that they're warehoused here for distribution elsewhere in the world(at least this part of the world).

The AC evaporator for the truck was in a warehouse in the US......I doubt that it's used for any other truck as it specifically fits the firewall of the 70 series. It's nice that some of the parts are around....makes things easy. A lot of the parts haven't been easy to find.....

Beautiful work.....
I hope when the job is completed and you are out cruising around, you are not side swiped by a 1972 Buick Electra 225 with no insurance. :D
I would be almost scared to drive that thing in public. :)

There are a few reasons why you are able to get 7x series parts in the US:

1. 7x vehicles were imported to Canada and, to a lesser extent, into the US for many years for mining activities. Toyota is obligated through terms of long term contracts to provide parts and technical support to these companies who bought many hundreds of 7x vehicles and still continue to do so.

2. The Ontario, CA warehouse for Toyota is the so-called "Japan warehouse" where all parts out of Japan come into the US and are then sent to other areas of the country and the Western Hemisphere (since the 7x is a worldwide, rationalized platform). This warehouse has parts for dozens of vehicles of non-US production and purchase mainly because they supply some parts of central and south America.

3. The reason you can go into most any Toyota dealership and get these parts (if you have a good parts guy-this is more and more difficult to come by) is that the part numbers have been loaded into the North American parts master file by TMC mainly to support Western Hemisphere operations. Some parts departments can get these parts, some cannot. There needs to be serious interest on the part of a Toyota dealership parts guy to want to help you because many of them will get a part number that they have never seen and they will basically say "oh it's not available" when it is in fact available but has to ordered in a specific manner--internally, these are called "off-line orders" because you do not go through normal Toyota ordering channels to get these parts.

For example, the frame assy for a 79 series is available in the US master and can be ordered in about 26-28 weeks by any Toyota dealer. But finding one that wants to go through the hassle of an "off-line order" is another story since it is a paper-work/communication heavy endeavor.

Hope this sheds some light.

By the way, the hose clamps are so way sexy and are perfect for what you are doing.
