Is The 1FZ-FE A Good Motor ??

For what it is the motor isnt bad .... but there have been other motors that were pretty good too if durability and reliability is the measure....maybe great if they could have been fed the more modern lubricants like synthetic oil and good oil filters I have been feeding my LX450 eg:

Ford 300ci 6 cyl
Chrysler 225ci Slant 6 cyl
Any Volvo "Red block" 4 cyl
Several MB straight six diesels
BMW large block 6 cyl
Most Honda 4cyl
I am sure there are others.

Hell I'd probably still be driving my 1962 Comet with 144ci 6cyl if I lavished the same attention (and PM) on it as I do the LX450 ... ok ... maybe not. But I could have bought three of them for less then the cost of the exhaust system on my LX

The 1FZ-FE is a great motor, well taken care of it will last you many miles.

The reason so many people are doing conversions is the cost/ benefit of rebuilding the original motor. Additionally, many FZJ80 owners have become accustom to modern vehicles, with modern power and MPG's.

Sooo, when assessing the cost/ benefit of rebuilding, installing a head gasket and or even PM, conversions come to mind.

The FJ80, FZJ80 are great vehicles and well built, while the engines are getting tired. An engine conversion is an excellent way to "renew" the last great 4x4 vehicle of all time.

I will back up what maxx is saying. The v8 swap made my 80 feel modern with modern power and efficiency. It's a completely different vehicle and is sporty to drive. Imagine leading the pack away from the red light.

The 1fz was a great motor when it came out, but there are better motors out there now. Cheaper, more power, and better efficiency and cleaner.

I thought this thread was a joke at first. There ain't many cars with 265k nikes someone would drive back and forth across the country, if your wallet could tolerate such behavior, the 80 will not let you down. As mentioned there are obviously better motors available on the market, but overall, it is great for what it is. She ain't let me down yet.

Wait, I'm trying..closing my eyes...stepping on the gas and ACTUALLY pulling away...I just can't see it...never did it :crybaby:

The Landcruiser is a climbing beast off-road even with the old straight six. The time it is a problem is when you are trying to merge into rush hour traffic on the freeway or when you are trying to climb a steep incline on a mountain highway (keeping it in 2nd gear helps).

Love the 1FZ-FE. 150k on it, and Blackstone oil analysis at 145k with 5k on the oil (5w30 Total synthetic) came back as....motor is like new. Original HG, no leaks.

With 33s, It’s not fast, but I after I put 4.56s in it, there honestly never is a need for more power. It accelerates (not quickly) up hills, and can tow fine.

Having lived in Kenya for 20+ years, I have seen how these vehicles operate under the harshest conditions. 1fzfe included. Beasts. Toyota did not design these vehicles for US highway speeds or the autobahn. They are meant to get you places no others can and expect you to soak in the scenery getting there. Their interior design is for exterior viewing pleasure. They have always catered to the ruggedness. It is only lately that they have appeased the mall cruiser fad. I see too many posts here about the mad rush to get somewhere in a LC. The 80s and earlier LC models don’t promise what they are not designed to deliver. If you need to get somewhere in a hurry in mall class, it is probably not a good choice for you.

Totally agree....same thing that makes me want a older turbodiesel mercedes gelandewagen; simple, rugged, and made to last forever....

I had a pristine w123 300 D. What a beast even non turboed. Motor is a Swiss watch. Stock Springs were insane. They are used as cabs in Europe for 500k miles. Then shipped to North Africa where all the unnecessary electrical guts a ripped and used as Bush taxis for another 500k miles. Have not seen one where the stock springs failed.

Holy thread resurrection batman

Yes!!! I’ve owned two 300Ds. 1977 and 1981. The OM617 is amazing. I have no problem paying for something....I just want it to last.

310K on mine. Original head-gasket....in fact, all original drive train right down to the propshaft u-joints.

Not a 'powerful' engine...but definitely reliable.

Kind of like a tractor engine (block) but with a better head.

The OP was not complaining about BREAKDOWNS, but just routine maintenance of a 20+ year old motor. REALLY!? I dont know of ANY motor that can be run for 20+ years and 1-2-300,000 miles and NOT require some amount of MAINTENANCE......
