Is The 1FZ-FE A Good Motor ??

I have had mine since it had 20,000 miles on it. Not too many problems. I had to replace the head gasket and that is about it. Take care of it and it will take care of you. One of the things that makes Landcruisers famous the world over is the level of reliability and the 80-series engine is a key part of that reputation.

I've has 3 80's here over the last 20 years.. and they will go a long way, they have some issues as they age but overall are better than anything else.. wheel it all week in moab and drive home at 70mph...not much else can do that..

do the headgasket, my gray one i tried to push to 300k miles on the stock gasket and ended up having to rebuild the motor ( my fault not the truck) . Even at 300k the cams, bearings and pistons were in spec, just the deck of the block was bad.. i have seen stock fzj80's with 400k on them, just do the headgasket every 150k or so and keep a good radiator and fan clutch in it.. and PM...

most of the head gasket problems come from overheating due to poor maintence.. plugged radiator bad fan clutch and the stupid stock gauge that doesnt move till its overheated...

I could not agree more

Is there really any reason to change the head gasket at 150k (besides PM) when you've covered all the bases in the cooling system and you're not overheating / not burning any more oil than standard conditions?

No Run it.

^^^^^

Yep.

The only temp gauge in all of automotive history that says "oh yeah....I forgot to tell you......."

I've had mine for about 4 yrs now. Bought it with 220k miles on it and it looked fairly abused but I didn't care because I knew it could handle it and whatever repairs it needed I could do myself. It's sitting at 295k now and still trucking. I've been replacing things along the way and it occasionally gets the better of me but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Put a real temp gauge in it, you can get a. Scan gauge if obd2, if obd1 drill and tap the waterneck or do the gauge mod. That way you are aware, they usually blow slow, leak a little a first and run hot. Its just by the time most people notice something is wrong it blown and smoking..

Don't follow my example... mine showed evidence of leaking in a couple places, but at 300k i am sure it had been hot/overheated numerous times in its life.. this truck has alot of off road and towing miles and has been worked from the sothern border to 10k ft up in the winter. Just happened to dirty the antifreeze so i noticed, fully expected it and was watching..(it never leaked) ohh it had a good radiator and clutch fan and all pm done...

My point was do it as prevenative maintence, (i waited too long but now i have a rebuilt motor, I had pitting on the deck surface and chose to rebuild the motor.. )

toyota designed the gasket to blow before the motor was damaged due to overheating. I have done 3 of my own and helped several others do there gaskets it's not that hard just takes a good day to do..

Having rebuilt alot of motors the 1fz is so overbuilt its amazing. They just require a little love every 100k or so..

My first 80 the first thing to go wrong was the taillight baulb at 180k and 14 years, i think they are a good rig.. they are just getting older like the rest of us.. lol...

292k with new HG at 265k. Uses about one quart in a 5k OCI. No smoke ever and runs mountain passes at 4000 rpm like a beast.

270k. Rebuilt head and replaced HG out of PM. Did all hoses and seals. New blue fan clutch. Running like a champ. At 245k cylinder bores still had factory hone marks.

Agree badass.
