Interest in stainless steel FJ40 exhaust systems?

I'd be interested, but since I'm running a SBC, I'm afraid you'd need to see it to build one.

I'm interested in the exhaust down pipe concern. What grade of stainless would you be needed to take the heat right after a set of glowing Ram Horn manifolds? They get hot... Really hot! BBQ & other High heat paint just burns off.

400 series. nothing in the 300 series is up to the task.

I have to respectfully disagree, 321 stainless is commonly used for turbo car manifolds for its resistance to heat related failure, and 304 is pretty commonly used in headers also. Check it out.

I will order up some tubing this coming week and keep everyone posted on what I come up with.
Thanks,

78 FJ40 ... I'd be interested, if you're into shipping, etc ... I just bought a nice stainless steel cat-back and hi-tuck tailpipe from Dirty Deeds/BA Mufflers in California for my FJC ... as you say, not cheap ...

I can definitely ship. Looks like there is a few interested people already, I will slowly move forward with this project and keep this thread updated as I progress.
Thanks,

I'll be in the market for an exhaust system soon. The local shop won't touch my project for sure.

I may be interested. I'm going to need to replace my exhaust sooner than later.

I would be looking to make it work with headers. Specifically the one from Marks Off Road, it's Downey style. http://www.marksoffroad.net/1specials/TriY-Header.html

Looking it at it may connect where the down pipe does.

I want to order tubing, what size is the preferred size? Stock is 2" my truck has a mix of 2.5"-2" would making it out of 2.25" be acceptable for most? Also I would like to get a solid number of people that are very serious and will purchase these when I start making them.
Thanks,
-Sean

2.25" would work for me.

I am very serious about buying an exhaust.

Now to see if JohnnyC's source for mufflers can still make them.

Are you willing to make them out of other materials? Aluminized for instance? It would be noticeably cheaper and last longer than steel.

Are you asking about aluminum or aluminized steel?

Aluminized steel.

@forestderp, are you still working this out? I'm going to need a full system before long. Stating at the exhaust manifold flange. And have you thought about the aluminized steel?

Not sure you want 321 SS, its only rated to 800c o_O and not suitable for bright polish, which is still pretty high temps, 310 SS is rated to furnace parts and equipment, resistant to temperature 900°C to 1000°C.

Or you could go for 310s, used for furnace parts, radiant shields, fluidised beds., resistant to temperatures up to 1150°C, possesses high strength and resistance to sigma phase formation.

Have not decided which grade to use for my 12ht rebuild engine, but my current 304 SS system on the 2H looks like a normal rusted old steel system (but it in perfect condition otherwise). Only need 8 feet of 3", have been in discussion with a manufacturer here on producing the system tubing for me including bends and the 90deg elbow from the turbo.

I would agree with this-I used some 304 and 321 SS angle(1/4") on my BBQ grill as the burner heat diffusers--they look like regular rusted steel after about a year-and it doesn't get to near the heat of the exhaust--maybe 404 or 416?
