Well to start off I have two FJ40s that both need some exhaust work, I am a welder by trade and I was thinking I would build myself a nice SS exhaust system to replace the old work out bent up system currently on my rig, and I was wondering if I made up a batch of stainless systems if there would be any interest?
This wouldn't be the cheapest option, although it will be nicer than what 95% of exhaust shops would do.
Thanks,
-Sean

For what years of cruisers?

I had a SS muffler made ... But no pipes... The company can make more mufflers in the oem style AFAIK

I can find the post
I have both a 1970 and a 1975, I know they are both different, not sure if there are more variations or not?

I just replaced my exhaust this past August with a factory setup. It was a pistol to find factory pipes as they aren't made anymore, nor are most factory brackets, I paid too much probably. If I recollect correctly, two vendors make some parts. Metric TLC makes the down pipe from the manifold and Cruiserparts.net makes the down pipe, center pipe and a repro muffler. It can get...pricey when replacing the three. I would like to see more offerings for factory style pipes, stainless would be great. No body makes the factory style clamps like the grey piece in the photo, they are NLA. I ended up using chain link fence pole attachments, the ones in the photo were made by the guy I think for an fj45. Not sure if this is helpful or not, I'd be interested for future projects and in the future for some clamps like those but am tied up getting the motor going now.

Would you be remaking the stock headpipe aspect where it bolts into the manifold? It would have to be quite strong to resist bending at the mounting flange. Had a moronic exhaust worker install upside down the piece that looks like a hollow sliced bagel that fits over the top of the headpipe. Then he yarded on the wrench, bending the mount flange, giving me a lovely leak - that he mudded over to hide his screwup.

sorry to hijack...which way does the exhaust collar go? cup up or cup down?

I heard, read, and actually saw that the exhaust for a Honda Civic will fit the stock FJ40. The curves are almost exactly identical, and there are many Honda Civic exhaust options as you well know. I'll post some side by side pictures if I can find them. This may give you a few more options at a better cost.

Interesting I will look into that.

I would be making everything to work with the stock manifold and from there all the way to the tail pipe. Due to the low volume nature i will be using pre bent mandrel bends, and tig welding it all together with a back purge to retain the stainless properties of stainless.
I will contact some friends in the sheet metal fabrication world about getting the brackets made to like factory only stainless.
Thanks,
-Sean

using 304 or 316 sanitary?
the down pipe section will not hold up to the heat cycles for very long....couple of years tops.

I was planning on using 304, I doubt the temps get up too crazy high on these things to warrant using something like 321 stainless or inconel (however I can totally use 321 for the down pipe). I would say the biggest contributor of stainless exhaust cracks is mostly do to improper weld technique. (not purging/flux, undercut etc.)
That $100 ebay civic system is cheaper than I can buy raw materials for.

i work in a pipe shop. new guys are always trying to use the drops for exhausts, and the down pipes always fatigue crack. you're looking at exhaust temps within shouting distance of 1000 degrees under load within 2-3 feet of the manifold.
