Like many of you, my pig’s tailgate handle broke. I tried all the usual suspects, looking for a handle to no avail. I even saw one listed on fleabay for $900.00! That’s just shameful.

I enlisted a friend of mine to scan and 3D print a handle and it has worked well for me...well enough that I have no interest in paying big money for somebody’s ready-to-snap, used up 40-year-old OEM handle. My buddy has agreed to print more of these handles for pig owners in need. Maybe your handle is fine, but you want a spare? Maybe you’d rather save your good NLA handle and would prefer to run a cheaper one?

This handle is printed in nylon and Kevlar. It has a bit of flex to it, but with my latches cleaned and greased and the latch rods adjusted nice and tight, it works well. I do make it a point not to jerk the tailgate open with the printed handle, only to release the mechanism. Then I pull the gate down with my other hand on the tailgate itself. I would argue that if we all did this, our tailgate handles would last a lot longer.

The price for the handle is $110 plus shipping. It is being offered in black only. Here is more technical info my buddy sent on it as well as pics:

Tailgate Handle - $110 plus shipping.

This is a 3d scanned Part and Is a replica of the stock tailgate handle. It is made from a patented material from Markforge called Onyx. Onyx is about twice as strong as ABS because of the micro-carbon reinforcement. Because Onyx contains nylon, the engineering toughness and wear resistance is comparable as well, and the material has a heat deflection temperature of 145C. This part has strands of Kevlar in it for extra strength along with a little flexibility.

You can paint it and they say it can be plated but I have not done that yet. If I use carbon Fiber I can bring the strength up to 6061 Aluminium but I believe it is a little to brittle. I am thinking having a little flex is better for this application.

Very nice work on a part that everyone will eventually need.

One question: Do you know what type of scanner your friend used to create the model? Faro? I'm just wondering for future specialty parts manufacturing.

I realize that. The sintered metal one from Shapeways costs $80 more. Just trying to bring the price down a little with kevlar reinforced nylon vs. sintered metal.

Very cool! What bolts and spring did you use?
My OEM bolts and springs were missing so I used stainless bolts and lock nuts from the local ACE hardware.

That’s a great solution. I may just go ahead and order one. I called Classic Cruisers and they say the are going to be manufacturing them and charging $750ish which is highway robbery. I know they have to recover cost on the setup to make them but I don’t see many of us paying that much. Thanks

When I looked at getting these made, the set-up costs were LARGE. Given the volume they will probably sell, I can see how they landed at ~$750.
I will be surprised if they actually cast them and tap that shallow thread.
Sorry to be contrary...
