I have a 1985 land cruiser. I need someone to screen shot and post the removal and installation process/information from a FSM for a split case transfer case. I have looked all over this and have had no luck. Thanks

I did a search, use the little magnifying glass SEARCH up in the top right corner. There are many
threads and there should be FSM PDF’s in there

You have to remove the transmission and transfer case together.
84 Chassis-body FSM under the (MT) manual transmission section starting at pg 33. I'd leave the exhaust bolted up. The trans/tcase will get past it.

This is incorrect if all you need to do is remove the transfer case. If so no need to drop the transmission because you can pull an install the t-case while under the Cruiser.

@Pauljthegreat A FJ60 in Camden, AL, must be the only one in town, maybe the county.

Thank you. Really getting annoyed seeing incorrect info being given.

Ok. You don't HAVE to remove them together. In fact you could split the case and remove the transfer case or rebuild the transfer case while under the truck. But note that the FSM shows taking them out together and I believe this is the preferred way. If you read the directions from the FSM that I posted it does show removing the t'case with the transmission.

And if splitting the case to remove it while under the truck was the way to go why isn't there instructions on doing it like that in the FSM?
You have to open the split case and remove gears, idler shaft, bearings, rear output shaft etc before you can remove the front 1/2 of the case. I've never done it this way but it seems like the challenging way to go. I imagine you will get grease all over your head or hat from the bottom of your truck. You'll be doing a lot of ducking and maybe hitting your head on exhaust etc. The gears, bearings, idler shaft may fall out while you're pulling off the rear split case. You maybe trying to balance and hold same gears, bearings, idler shaft, rear output shaft in place while it wants to fall out when you go to put the case together. You're going to have a hard time getting your hands on top of the split case to turn the shift shaft arm while reinstalling the rear split case.

And by the way if I announced I was going to give everyone on here a fresh 100.00 bill some would still complain that I didn't give it to them in twentys.

this is a good video esp on putting the case back together with idler shaft orings and thrust washers in place. Also if you're rebuilding, order your kit from Georg...the guy in the video at Valley Hybrids and he can help you if you need tech assistance.

I agree the transfer case can be removed and rebuilt while on the truck but it is a confined space.
There is reasonable grounds to remove the transmission and t case as a unit especially if one is not
thoroughly familiar.
Paulthegreat do you have a 4 speed or 5 speed?
I suggest removing the both together if you have the tools and floor space. If you have a 5 speed,
If you remove the 4 bolts that hold the back half of the case on the seal for the 5th gear housing is
loosened and want to make use you don’t compromise that.
As suggested above, I’d also recommend calling Georg at Valley Hybrids for your rebuild kit
@orangefj45 when I got my kit I was lucky enough to be visiting Stockton and met Georg. He
suggested and I purchased a number of extra seals and gaskets above and beyond the kit
that made for a more thorough rebuild.

Let me also agree that it's easier to remove the whole trans/transfer as a unit and then to rebuild the transfer on the bench. It is POSSIBLE to rebuild under the truck, but that is a cramped way to do it. Even with a lift, I'd pull the whole unit.

I like the stand the transmission upright with the input shaft facing down, then build the split case vertically. (obviously you need a hole in your work bench or build a small stand with plywood) Sounds crazy, but when do it that way, everything falls together quickly.

I think if you only had issues with the t-case, removing the transmission is a major waste of time. I have a lift as well but I have done it on a 60 with no lift in the truck. It is quite easy and straightforward either way. For somebody who doesn't remove transmissions on a regular basis and does not have the tools (lift ,transmission jack) I would recommend rebuilding the case in the truck.

I have rebuilt mine under the truck. I have 4” lift with 35’s so I was able to at least sit. Much easier to do solo as well.
