Loosely related, hydraulic ram steering was used prolifically by every automaker on something in the 60's/70's and I've daily'd several. The oem setups used a cheap cylinder and a valve that got sloppy quickly. When they systems were in good shape they worked really good.

A stock 73-77 Ford Highboy used a 1-5/8" hydraulic ram with a 9/16" rod. This setup will turn 37's in deep ruts with a finger on the wheel.

Also, no need whatsoever for a steering damper with ram assist.

The Issue with hydro on a 80 is not the ram size it's the gear driven internal pump.
To get 1 finger turning you need a high flow pump to match the ram.

Is there demand for a high volume 1FZ pump?

I make gear drive power steering pumps for other applications.

Everyone that runs Hydro needs one.
If you make them I well buy one 😎

What is used as a pump if the chase bay res is in play?

I welded the small tabs to something like this.

Double check the diameter of your tierod.

Whats a Sims?

Shims?
Yes shims. I'll correct above and I have a couple parts stock questions also and I'll take it offline with ya

Clamps have a tendency to fail. Should weld directly.
True

My clamp has been holding without issue. Welding to the rod would make alignments more of a pain then it it with the clamp.

I also upgraded to @Delta VS rods and my aluminum to steel welding skills are lacking.

If you have any questions or lack of clarity regarding hydro assist and full hydro steering setups, Eric at Radial Dynamics is the man. Dude has a ton of experience and is always up for a challenge. He put together a kit for me years ago when I had my YJ buggy and it worked flawlessly. Full hydro setup that wasn't sketchy at street speeds....65 +mph.
