Loosely related, hydraulic ram steering was used prolifically by every automaker on something in the 60's/70's and I've daily'd several. The oem setups used a cheap cylinder and a valve that got sloppy quickly. When they systems were in good shape they worked really good.
A stock 73-77 Ford Highboy used a 1-5/8" hydraulic ram with a 9/16" rod. This setup will turn 37's in deep ruts with a finger on the wheel.
Also, no need whatsoever for a steering damper with ram assist.
