How To: HID+Projector Retrofit on a 100 Series.

One more question as I get ready to make this happen. How important is the stock reflector once the HID kit and projector is installed? Is it even reflecting any light or not? Mine are just dull but I don't want to spend the $$$ on new housings if the reflective coating doesn't even matter once a projector is in...
 
The low beam reflector can be painted. Do not paint the high beam reflector. Only picture I have showing the black in the headlights.

I'm pretty positive there will never be a true "plug n play" option for an HID system in the 100. I think the best thing you could get for that is the LED bulb that Metric TLC is selling now. The only reason you can't plug n play an HID system is because you need projectors to properly, and legally, run an HID system.
 
Excellent! I was hoping I could paint them black. Why not the high beam? If install another projector in the high beam?

If you replace the high beam with a projector you'll need to disable the DRL circuit. Bad things happen when your high beam ballast sees constant low voltage in DRL mode.
Be super careful that the high and low beam projectors are aligned horizontally and vertically if you want to pass state safety inspection.

You could completely bypass the DRL with a quad setup. The relay harnesses are 80AMP from TRS. That is enough to power 4 ballasts. You can use a y-splitter on the harness and power all four ballasts, or all four projectors with no issue. However with that setup you would have to install a seperate switch for the high beam (see below).

However, the DRL does create another issue that you are correct about. The projectors have a high beam mode that will be triggered by the DRL. It's not an issue with on-coming traffic during the day, since the HID's will be off (via low beam circuit). However the electromagnet in the projector will be on and produce immense heat, leading to premature failure of the high beam solenoid in the projector. Leaving you with no high beam. The projector solenoid pulls power from the high beam socket, which with a DRL is always hot.

In short, the safest way to run ANY projector is to either disable to DRL's, or wire the fog lights as the DRL's.
 
Is there a projector small enough to fit in the high beams?
 
I killed my DRL's the first week I owned my truck. No issues there. But, if I went bi-xenon with the shutter, would another set even be necessary? I don't need to signal aliens...just want excellent light output...

the issue I think with HID in the high beams would be if I used them for flashing someone...i read that the ballasts don't enjoy that too much. But your recommended quad setup would be pretty amazing.

You will need the 9006>9005 high beam splitters for the bi-xenon part. Or simply use T-taps and tap into the high beam wires. Flashing on coming traffic once or twice while driving is fine. What's bad for HID's is sitting there for 15 minutes doing that.

thanks for the photo btw of the painted low beam housings. That photo is trippy to me...looks like you have perfect camber even though one wheel is loaded and the other unloaded...crazy.

You should see the camber of his truck when everything is unloaded. Wonky sums it up.

Quick question for the retrofit gurus on here. I'm in an '06 and my next mod will definitely be a retrofit. My question is, if I want to go all out and spring for the quad projector, what are my options (aside from the foglights) to run DRLs? Has anyone done small LED strips in the housings or anything like that and if so, is it complicated to wire up? I don't want it to look out of place, but I really believe in DRL's and keeping that functionality and visibility is important to me.

I'm not sure if this is something I'm ready to tackle on my own so if anyone does this on the side shoot me a message and we can talk.

Nick "2000uzj" who started this thread has done many retrofits on the side. Contact him.
 
^This. I would suggest shipping the housings to Nick and handling the wiring/aiming on your end if he is open to that. Be alot less to think about. For reference I have the TRS FX-R Stage III kit with Phillips 81522 bulbs and it is killer. Nick did everything turn key for me and my headlight housings looked like they were better than new when he was done.
