Hi to everybody,

My question is.... How does a fuel seperator work?
I searched this forum, Googled a lot, found Wikipedia's explanation but still don't get it. What does it seperate? Water from the diesel? Diesel out of the gasses and back in the tank or.....what? Why are there 3 lines, where do they go into the tank? Bottom, top, in the middle?
If it seperates water, where does the water go? Do you need to clean it or empty it out? Does it need maintenance? Again..... what?

I hope someone can explain this to me.

Thanks,

Rudi

Simple test.

Grab a glass jar, pour some fuel in and add water...water being heavier than fuel will sink to the bottom, clearly visible.

Most fuel filters have a drain at the bottom for you to purge any water, many use an internal float mechanizim wired into your dash.

The other part of your filter is the particulate reduction and or elimination, in other words a good filter will stop crap from entering the IP and hence injectors.

Thanks for explaining. This I understand. Now to my situation. How does it work with all the lines as you can see in the pic which I cropped from CCOT. One line goes in, one goes out, one is the purge or drain line. For me it's a closed system. Where does the water go?
Oh, BTW we are talking a BJ40 here.

Thanks,

Rudi

That's not a fuel separator.

That's thing you show is an emissions thing to keep gas fumes contained and out of the cab.

Hmmmmm , funny :hmm:,
The EPC says; SEPERATOR
CCOT calls it a; FUEL SEPERATOR
But OK, your answer makes sense. Thanks for explaining.

A quick search tells me that perhaps for some models years the full name of that part is the "fuel vapor separator."
https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/437799-75-fj40-vapor-separator.html

Confused yet? ;)

I'm looking for a picture of the actual fuel/water separator for you, but it looks more like a canister, about 3" in diameter, 5-6" long. (the cylinder is mounted vertically).

Hi Dan,
Thanks for all the explaning.
From now on I'll call it a Fuel Vapor Seperator.
Problem solved. Another thing learned. Every day a little bit more.

Do I need to keep the vapor separator in my FJ40 with a 2H diesel swap? I understand how it all works and everything but what are people doing typically? See I don't actually have one and would have to find one plus the protector to go over top of it. I always like less parts and less complication.

I'd honestly delete the Toyota one and fit a combined separator/filter..

Here's my original one.. it caused a breakdown, and had been drained a number of times in the past months before the breakdown..

In my Hj60 it has a small pinhole weeping leak, no problems starting/driving but with all the salad oil it swallowed the old diesel residue is fluid again and ends up in the separator and NOT in the diesel filter (never saw a flake in there).

The original is no longer available and a 5 minute fix is adding an after market filter but the glass bowl might scare some (when it hits a rock)
It is hard to find a 24 Volt WIF (water in fuel) sensor.

The OEM hard fuel line is 8 mm in diameter (.314"). 5/16" (.312")

or later type might be avaialble?: Toyota Landcruiser HJ75 Sedimenter assy, fuel 23930-68030

diesel filter was clean and I have a lot of filters so can change them often
(no need, never clogged, but one time the sunflower oil froze up I think)

I used the cheap 45 euro delphi HDF296 as replacement and just drove 3500 kilometer with it, I like the glass inspection and have one spare glass, every filter comes with new O-ring.
The sensor is 12V so not good for my HJ, HJ was packed and ready for holiday...

I really liked to have the warning light but it is useless and expensive, still I hate removing a warning light:

The sensor is 27 Volt and when the two wires are connected the filter light is on.

Tiny leak in mine:

Removed the water sedimenter, the 8 mm inside (14 mm outside) rubber hoses can be removed by hand and no tools needed, diesel starts leaking instantly.

Delphi HDF296 water sedimenter with 8 mm connection fittings (2 in bowl and 2 8mm so 4 brass fittings)

make a bracket?, or repair old one, still a cheap fix but not perfect, bowl should be filled but after starting, driving and pumping the prime pump there were no problems and it filled itself.

the sedimenter completly drained, more stuff but the sedimenter is filled and drained at the top:

The floater has a magnet and when up (floating) will switch on (make a connection)

open it up, unscrew plastic and no need to break it:

Now does is separate water?, it does but only "visible" water drops, the lower PPM (parts per million) is not removed aldo I like to think high PPM water bonds to visible water drops.
Non visible water is a WVO thing. link to biofuel book:

What fun it was to be a waste criminal storing 1000 liters, don't touch $hell international chemicals and the dutch queens money

Racor makes a prefilter with clear bowl and optional sensor. Tons of options though so I leave it to you to select the right one.
