Hi,

I got a 79 FJ40 in parts yesterday. The PO
Got it to use the axels but never did.
He mentioned that the guy he got it from just got the 2F rebuilt.
Now here is the ? And problem, because he was just going to use the axels the just lest the driveline outside for 6 years.
So how can I know that the motor is any good?

Thanks
Tikisia

take out the spark plugs and put a teaspoon of oil in each hole. turn the crank by hand a few turns and check to see if there are any binding points. you can pull the valve cover and check valve lash and drop the pan to check the bearings. if you have it on mounts in a frame, you can hook up a battery to the starter and do a compression check. you can also do a leakdown test without needing to crank the motor over. by using all of these tells, you should be able to determine if that engine is going to be a runner...

This is what I found!

If the carb was not covered, it is highly likely water got in through the filter and progressed down to the intake valves perhaps into the cylinder.

Excellent instruction, send us some more pics..................

That air filter makes me sad.

I always remind myself when I flip out about my 2Fs.......the Taliban and Pakistanis drive these things and they don't worry about all the crap we worry about and they run, run, run.......

closely related to a tractor :hillbilly:

So sad to see damage that could have been prevented by a $10 plastic tarp.

Not sure what would have value from a '79. Kinda looks like scrap to me.

Any parts that worthy of saving?

Duel water pump pulley, oil cooler & the oil filter bracket, motor mount brackets, and other motor attachments that one might need for another 2F.....provided those items listed above are worth saving. :wrench:

I'm personally a big fan of that distributor if it;s not hammered..

The motor is not worth putting money into.

Any parts that worthy of saving?
Thanks

Thermostat housing if you can save the threads
Distributor/Coil/Ignitor
Valve cover
Harmonic blancer
Flywheel
Starter
Alternator (only if OEM)
Carb might be an ok core for someone, though it looks hacked
The head itself might be usable as a core

But that there is a sad state of affairs.
