Missed the O2 sensor install....?

This has a stock manifold so it went on the top of the exhaust down by the frame.

I've been trying to put these things as far down as will fit for a while. If it's a header I usually go 4-6" past that collector.

The closer ones I did early would eat O2 sensors. Since I put them lower I don't have that problem like I used to.

Someone said my description of modifying the linkage pedal was confusing.

Put it in a vice and bend it straight where the rod stays inside the truck.

Drill a hole through the rod for the cable.

If you need to put the Sniper temp sensor into the head, here is the adapter needed. Use some Locktite 567 (no pipe thread)

Took it for a nice drive. Speedo is about 7 mph slow. Stock 3.70 gears and a split case is so nice in this 81.

Loaded up and headed home tomorrow.

When talking the ports on the head for the temp sensor, haven't looked but on a 60 with it being newer those have the available spot?

Late 40s and 60s yes.

I prefer using the block drain plug for a couple reasons.

One, if nothing flows out that needs to be addressed immediately. Lots of old motors are clogged back there.

Two, I like having two places to measure temp. Stock at the head and Sniper at the block.

For some reason I could not get my Sniper sensor to bite into this one. Odd but since I had an easy alternative I took it.

Price was about $5000 in parts and $2500 labor.
Sniper 550-850 for about $1300, Mosely install Kit for about $1600, DUI with wires for about $600. Does the $5k include powder coating costs? Any other big ticket items?

Thank you for sharing all these details. This is a great write up.

You were correct on the big 3 items but you can't forget this stuff

I did a Sniper before this one that was already desmogged and the labor was only $1100

Thanks, but typically it will thread right into the drain plug? No issues with the whole NPT vs BSPT threads?

Nope. Usually not. It will go
Right in. Not sure why this one wouldn't. Like I said I did not spend any time on it having an alternate spot

Funny, I was curious on the math as well - I went back and tallied up receipts from my self-assembled kit for everything soup-to-nuts (lines, fittings, ends, filters, Holley pieces, gaskets, adapters, etc), and it was well under $2k including the integrated Hyperspark CDI ignition as well....that was 5 years ago though, and Mosely takes a healthy cut for convenience vs self-sourcing.

Is what it is, interesting to compare approach and time differences. (Obviously, I was also implicitly "paying myself" to assemble and source the parts)

Comparing anything 5 years ago to now is literally apples to oranges. Most everything has doubled in that time but my shop rate 💪

Someone asked me about how to pull vacuum off the charcoal canister if you remove all of the smog stuff

Here is how I do it (if it needs it)

Most systems if the hoses are still good and not full of old gas, I've found, will vent out the charcoal canister fine without pulling vacuum on it

That said, 60s have a tendency to have a gas smell when parked that are often caused by poorly vented charcoal canisters. That's usually where I use the little delco valves.

My 72 fj40 sniper was done by the previous owner. Temp sender was in the drain plug. It was showing 210 to 220 on long drives. Decided to put it in the thermostat housing. When I removed the sending unit no water came out of the drain. It was completely plunged. Did a complete flush now wont go over 185.

FJ60 throttle cable addendum

60 pedals have a deal on them for a hand throttle. Unfortunately you can't have both doing it this way.

Step 1. Cut away a bit of the factory firewall barrier and expose the area in front of the pedal.

Drill right at the top of this welded tab. It just gets you around the booster.

Enlarge the hole to accept the cable

Insert one of these into the pedal. Find it at Lowe's. You may need to open the pedal hole a bit or take a bit of material off the anchor

Insert the cable inside to out

Another sniper in the books this week.

Great thread. Looking forward to it. Maybe getting ahead of tomorrow’s installment but, are you/do you ditch the carb fan too?
I did not ditch it or unhook it on the 60 I did this week and it's on right now after my first test drive. Everything smog related has been removed but it's still got the wire going to the manifold hooked up so it's blowing away. May as well leave it.

What spark plug gap are yall running with the sniper setup?
