Build His 80 and Her 80 tandem build thread

It was bound to happen soon or later. Destroying a second 80 in less than ten years and the subsequent efforts that have been required to “get back to normal” have caused a train load of stress. This project is behind time and way over budget!
Hang in there Bud 😉

Spent the last few nights with a wire brush, rags, and some acetone to clean the half-ass paint job Toyota puts on these new short blocks. Tonight she is getting her primer and paint! I also got the last 4 pieces of the body bushings I forgot to order when I first placed my order so the body bushings are now all done as well!

It going to be NICE

I got the brake booster and master cylinder replaced, along with the accelerator cable since I was already up under the dash. It was easier to do the brake booster without the gas pedal assembly and accelerator cable out of the way!

Love how thorough you’re being with this project !!
Nice work.

Consider cleaning up connectors while you are in there. Usually gets dusty and crud filled. One less thing to worry about. Contacts cleaner or brake kleen helps.

Rebuilt the alternator and got it cleaned up and back on the engine. Also finished cleaning the valve cover, got it ready to paint, and got the primer and the colors on for the wording. Finally I started getting the wiring harness I rebuild with all new plugs and connectors back on. So far, no issues with any of the replacement plugs, but time will tell if I got the harness right or not…. Next I need to figure out where all these hoses and tubes go on the vacuum valves under the upper plenum. I have made a real mess of it, and will have to take some time figuring it out.

Getting my rebuild harness adjusted and I found that one of the wires pulled out of a connector for one of the fuel injectors. I extended the wires so it is not in danger pulling the wire out again and got everything re-installed. Also, put the last coat of the clear coat on the valve cover. I don’t think it turned out too bad for a rattle can job and my first attempt at something like this. Last, I got the alternator and distributor back in as well.

Got the valve cover gasket on, the new grommet and new PCV valve installed and got the valve cover on. I also used the FSM, Partsouq diagram, and pictures found here and via google and got the vacuum lines under the upper plenum put in the right places, I think. If you see something wrong please let me know. I have set the upper plenum in place for now but not put the gaskets on until I am sure I do not need to take it back off again for anything. Also, I think I can remove two of the vac valves and a bunch of the vacuum lines since I am deleting the EGR and PAIR, so I am going to research what can be removed so make it a little cleaner under the plenum.

I was able to get the water pump, alternator idler pulley, distributor cap, new spark plugs and plug wires installed. I was terrible and did not get pictures. I also got the plastic wire covers installed. I need to decided if I am repainting these covers or buying new ones. I also reassembled the throttle body, which is the only thing I got pics of.

The silver was my first thought since it would match the color I painted the block. But now that you say it, I could see if I could get a spray can that matches the OEM color. I am impatient, so unless it is a color I can get quickly, it will end up silver, LOL.

I think those look really good black 🤷‍♂️
