At least a couple dozen of us.

You'll need to space the 6.5 Pioneer speaker out about 1/4" on the fronts, and 4" speakers will fit fine in the rear. Stock speaker grill fits both.

we you able to get the stock speaker grills to mount back flush with the door panel?

here is what keithf posted: I could not get them to fit behind the stock covers on my 97 LC without budging . I ended up doing the same as TrickY T - replacing the stock speaker cover with the Pioneer one (see Tricky T's pic a few posts above). It looks ok.

Man these things are getting hard to find. It appears that Pioneer has discontinued the TS-G1641R (6.5") and the TS-G1041R (4.0") and has upgraded them to a TS-G1642r and TS-G1042R. I am not sure if the new supersceded ones will fit under the stock grille or not. I was still able to find the old ones using Amazon.com. Total cost shipped to me is $75.00. I really didn;t want to get these right now... but my door is apart because my window regulator broke.... Oh well.... my D/S is blown so I will get them now..

Hope they are as easy to install as every one says!

Check on my thread on the stock mounted sub. You could easily stick with stock sized fronts and add the sub for an outstanding system.

The new receiver will make as much or more of a difference than the speakers. My system is flat out unbelievable compared to what it was a week ago, and I'm just running a Pioneer deck and Kenwood speakers.

.

Yes Curtis,

My stock speaker grills mounted back with no problem.

You can not see any bulge in the door panel at all with mine. I only had to shim the speaker out about 3/16" on mine.

Hey Nay
What thread ?? I do want to do a sub in mine. I have an awesome system in my 72 Blazer and the Sub made all the difference. I also need to get a new head unit and of course an amp to run everything.

I just bought a pair of the Pioneer TS-G1641R (6.5") at Target for 50.00 so they must still be available.

I just bought (2) sets of TS-G1641R (6.5") on eBay for $46 delivered(total $ for 2 sets).

Installed front set and am very happy for less than $20. Can't go wrong. Factory grills do seem to bulge. Probably remove and go with the Pioneer grills. If someone steals my truck because of some $20 speakers, I need to move. :) Once I put the new head unit in, it will be more of a target anyway I suppose.

I installed these tonight after work. Amazing difference. I don't see how the old ones were working at all. the surrounds of both were at least half missing. The center of the passenger side speaker also had a huge hole in the center. Well worth the hour and 40 bucks for the speakers. If you use the weather stripping and bend in the tabs on the speaker frame they fit perfectly. I removed the plastic "nuts" that the original speaker bolts screwed into and clamped the metal "nuts" that came with the speakers into the original holes. Worked well with the screws that came with the speakers and no drilling needed.

I bought the Pioneer TS-G1641R Speakers at Best Buy for $19.99. I bought the demos and they removed them for me from the speaker wall. Installing today on my 97LC. I am going with the weather stripping and will also bend the tabs. But when you say bend the tabs in (lathamb) you do mean in as toward the door, right?
Hopefully this goes smoothly. I'd like to stick with the stock look but if the sound improves then I really do not care.

I've got a 94 FZJ and unfortunately my Pioneers were NOT a direct install. For some reason the magnet on the rear of the speaker hit the Metal window run. The gap was more than 1/4" and may have been 3/8". Unfortunately it was to much of a gap, so I went ahead and took the speaker grilles off the door panel and installed them on the outside of the door panel and put the Pioneers covers on. They sound better than the old ones, especially since I found the p/s speaker totally missing..... No wonder that side wasn't working. Even though the factory grilles are missing they still look nice and sound good.

I also took this opportunity to replace the door window molding and clean the door locks, window regulators, etc. The windows go up/down like butter now.

Let me know if anyone wants pics with the pioneer grilles on and I will get ya some.

This guy just combined shipping on them (front and rear) for a total of $66 delivered.

So are his auctions for a pair of speakers then? He's got them priced at like $25 in the auction but I don't see anywhere that it says it is a single speaker or a pair of speakers... Just wanna be sure. Sent him a message as well but want to see how your experience went/goes.

One listing says pair the other does not. Can't believe I didn't read the second one closer. I just emailed him as well.

I got a response that said the auctions are for pairs of speakers. w00t! Just made the purchase. Can't wait to see how well my $66 buck speakers sound with my scion head unit.

installed these on my 97 tonight (fronts); will be doing the rears tomorrow. I used a section of window channel as a gasket around the speaker to prevent it from hitting the window metal channel.(since I just replaced my old window channels )

For those of cant get this mod to fit behind the stock panels.. I have a question....

Are you trying to reuse the stock black grill cover that mounts over the stock speaker?

I ditched it and just set the door panel with the integrated speaker grills over the pioneer speakers...

Wondering is that was causing fit problems for you guys.....

I agree that the stock speakers are far from sounding good. But Why not just get rid of the ugly factory speaker covers anyway. There are so many choices for premium speakers that will work when mounted from the outside, and they will sound better with more low frequency response than anything thin designed to fit behind the panel. The factory inverted cone is a joke. And the 4" speakers in the back that have another hollow inch around them, get rid of them too. Trim the rear door sheet metal back another 1/4" and you can fit 6" speakers back there too! That is what I've done to both my 80's. Sounds great even without a sub, even better with a sub.
As for resale value, or whatever reason for keeping the factory covers. I think that a better sounding stereo will totally outweigh any loss of O.E. look. I don't like a lot of the outrageous looking plastic grills out there, and I think mine looks quite nice with the all black mesh grill covers. If it came down to it, you could paint the grills just like a home theatre in-wall/ceiling speaker, to blend in to the door panel.
