X2 on the Number Plate. It looks great!

Keep up the good work. And pictures please...lots of pictures.

Here's my little sound cube - going to mount it between the seats with a protective screen around (some sort of rubber matting to soften the bouncing - but I want to be able to take it out easily from the top. FYI, it also takes batteries..you'll also notice, it has input for your guitar should you need an amp while youre out wheeling.

The sound quality is much better than the video portrays!

Here's the vid demo

Tell me more about that sound cube, me like! And the music? Blind Boys of Alabama?

Moving right along, Im wondering if there was a sleeve over this at one point - or should I should keep it greased for now?

yes, you are missing the rubber boot you see on all of your tie rod ends, is the joint sloppy? You can buy the boot or a new rod end (with boot) it needed.

Trust me it sounds far better in person!! Ive never heard of this group you mentioned, but if they sound like this - Im game! Its Clutch. If you watch Walking Dead you might recognize the song from the end of this episode . Theyve been around awhile - I geeked out when I heard their song start on my favorite show.

TDK makes some great (albeit expensive) boomboxes that outplay many systems. Im a bit of a home theater audiophile and I get quite picky about sound quality..Youll notice it also has USB in the back - which doubles as a phone charger or you can put a flashdrive on it full of music..I dont think thats the best option for a landcruiser..too much bounce.

Going to run an inverter under the floormats and put some kind of shock absorbing mat under and around the bottom of the tray I make, then you pull the cube out from the top. The top of the cube is kind of like that non-skid otterbox rubber which is specifically for sitting your mp3/phone on..but when I make the enclosure for it, itll have a 'lid' to secure it and hold the phone inside.

Here's a cnet review - notice they say its not a good choice for outdoors, hence the idea of fabricating a protective enclosure. I dont plan on leaving it in the 40 (especially in the summer) Nor is it a daily driver so its not a constant "pick it up, put it in, take it out, put it back" all the time..I like the added plus of using batteries if necessary (even though it needs TWELVE of them)

Sound Cube Solution

We went to Lowes with a very vague idea of what I wanted to do with the sound cube. Im proud to say my fix it all huz figured out the PERFECT solution for this sound cube to be mounted..

A junction box! We'll cut out half circles so the speakers arent muffled. The largest junction box is 12" squared, the cube is 9.8" squared. After he cuts out the circular pattern, Ill sand it for texture and then spray it with the same rubber protectant I use on the underside! The lid to the junction box can be fitted with long bolts to secure the top side (if needed). I have an extra otterbox holster which will easily clip to the side to prevent sliding.

A square section of that cheap foam matting you can get at Harbor Freight, cut to fit the inside and run up the sides should give enough cushion and barrier..how cool is that??

BTW - For the dog, do some Dog Whisperer tricks on it "TSSSST!"

Holy crap that made me laugh out loud! I hate barking ass dogs!!!!! I too have been at that boiling point while working on stuff.

We've got two dogs, golden retriever and retriever mix - both are rescues. They only bark when someone's at the door..I cannot stand the incessant barking of certain breeds.:bang:

After a full day at work, came home threw on some work clothes and started cleaning up under the front half of the 40. I know how much everyone likes pics..so here's what I started with. Tomorrow youll get 'after' pics.

These are both from the driver side. You can see the floor pan looks pretty rusty - and from where I began on top side there are a couple of spots. I dont plan on paying it too much attention as I plan on replacing the floor pans in the next sixth months.

I fear this bushing looks okay...for now.

And here's an official salute, to my huz who knows how I feel about pics - but he's a big help.

All this talk about barking dogs...I thought Id throw in one of our 'girls' Bailey. Shes about 7 years young now, still a puppy at heart - loves the water more than we do!

With a break in the clouds yesterday (its been raining consistently for the last week, we struck out to get the front half of the cleaned, sanded and coated as I did the rear a few pages ago. We're getting down to T-minus 2 weeks until I take my rig to my clubhouses' big event - a weekend of camping and wheeling in Uwharrie National Forest So after the suspension is complete, we'll be ready for that weekend!

My huz took it upon himself to work at the underspray, as I finished sanding and cleaning last evening so this is what I came home from work today to find -

PRETTY huh? Ahhh the Landcruiser 'mudness' - Im cleaning it up just so I can take it out and dirty it up

My front bumper is scratched, dinged and dented. But I feel pretty confident that SURELY these dents and dings are actually worth some offroad credit from my fellow owners - the TRUE story is that PO previous to my PO went to purchase the 40, and the other owner pushed it around by the bumper, with a tractor.

I sanded and treated it with the permatex, Id gotten a can of "OEM bumper black" and the huz sprayed it today - (what a nice guy!) And its waaay to shiny for me - notice the reflection? Ill probably find a flat black for it. Eventually Ill get a new bumper, because the female in me says ACCESSORIZE! :princess:

Nice work! That paint looks fantastic... mine never looked that good, or that smooth.

One word of caution: I noticed the seperated front drive shaft hanging down. There is a specific way the driveshaft flanges are supposed to be phased. If you did not put match marks on the two pieces, you will, likely, reassemble them out of phase and get lots of vibration. This is most important in the rear where you spend 90% of yuor time in 2wd at speed.
I don't recall if the DS flange ears are supposed to be in phase or 90 degrees out of phase... I'm leaning toward the latter, but best to check the FSM and a search on here.

Also, are you missing a wheel stud on the left brake drum?

Thanks & Good call - the FSM I downloaded before I even owned one..(I like to be prepared:D) Match marks were something my huz suggested before we started on that...Dont tell him how right he is..he'll be unbearable :zilla:

I missed this question - damn youve got a good eye for detail! Wanna make a drive down south and help me out??!!

I picked up a wheel stud (plus an extra, just in case) from the local yota dealer. The huz is about to attach the new one. He's having issues on figuring this out. I told him there's a great forum full of info he might want to check out. :D

Boy, if we can find the time, I'd love to get a weekend in the fall to run the beaches down there. The last time I ran the OBX beaches was New Years 2001/2002 in the FJ40.

While I'm at it, those DS bolts look shiny in the before picture. Make sure they are the right size and the PO didn't throw some 1/4 grade 1 bolts in there. The slop will shear them right off and, depending on your speed, flip the rig and certainly destroy your T-case. Just passing the knowledge.

As far as the hub studs go, the edge of a strong work bench a 5lb hammer and a drift of some sort will get the job done. Tap, then pound in from the back side of the drum... I wonder why one was missing in the 1st place. If it goes in real easy, I suspect it was stripped and you may need a new drum.

Well, let me address the easy part - the huz is planning an oyster roast this winter..only for my patient landcruiser advice giving owners  So consider yourself invited..date to follow.

Im probably going to slap myself in the head...but screw it - what are DS bolts?
Meanwhile..Ive got to go back outside and work on the stripped screw out (side project while I debate the input on shocks...it makes me happy doing body work, go figure!) BTW, it came stripped...I havent done it myself - YET!

Thanks for the patience and advice from everyone..Its got to be weird to have someone so "knowledge free" as I am ha ha..

DS= Drive Shaft. I noticed on the "before" picture of the backside of the front axle that the bolts on the driveshaft to axle pinion flange were shiny.

We anxiously await the date.

Great photos and story. I see jack stands, which are cool, but I also see cinder blocks and house brick.

While those could be used to support part of the axle weight for a suspension job, NEVER use brick as a primary vehicle support while working on the truck (especially cinder blocks on their side, as you have them arranged). I'm not trying to be a jerk here, I just want MUDders to be around so I can ask them questions in the future.

Long week, to be sure. Im counting down to taking my 40 on her first wheeling adventure and Im starting to feel the procrastinator's pinch. I cannot take full responsibility. It's rained 10 of the last 14 days. Afternoon storms here on the NC coast are pretty common, but Im beginning to assume working on a vehicle in your driveway is much like washing and waxing a new car..it is sure to immediately rain.

Im waiting on exchanged shocks to arrive. I was going to replace the steering damper (according to the manual, it was originally called a SHIMMY DUMPER? BUT that will wait..apparently I need some sort of SST (part no 09611-22011) to remove the SHIMMY DUMPER

I have no doubt there's a workaround for the silly, probably overpriced and easily replaced piece..and its already been a long day. While waiting on shocks to finish the suspension off I noticed although the radiator is recently replaced, the part holding its anchored to is rough. I used my free time yesterday to remove the headlights, clean up the rusting light 'cups' and removed the bib..the black grill needed some love too - so what the hell..Here's the result - (give some love to the huz - he's the one who did the white enameling on the "toyota" piece!)

Here's the front end, just have to put the eyes back on - theyre currently drying. Went with a satin finish almond color. Flat Khaki is too dark for me - and I live next to a military base - so its not uncommon to see. I keep hearing how the dune beige is the signature color. The more I thought about it, the more I realized Ive never seen a dune beige jeep..which doubles my enthusiasm for continuing along the same vein in color. Ill probably never have a pro paint job done - as why would I drop that kind of cash for a vehicle I will scratch up...if Im using it for what it was 'born' for?! But thats my personal opinion..

The hood release will be colored black tomorrow.

The white bezel goes on, which I think will really make the white toyota 'pop'! What do you think?
