1962 FJ40 RESTORE: paint,,,,ROOF, BEZEL, BODY. Good match.

Hello you guys,

With the help of many on this forum, especially " My Wife Says No FJ " I was able to come up with a workable color for my 1962 FJ40 ROOF and BEZEL ( and body also ). MY WIFE S.N.FJ was kind enough to send along info on color cards that matched his early 60's FJ40 roof. I in turn had samples made from info he provided and decided the perfect match was on the TOP LEFT SIDE of the Card PICTURED BELOW where is says "60's ROOF WHITE FJ40". PLEASE NOTE that all the colors on that card are samples of potential early cruiser roof colors except for where it mentions Lily White. I came to realize a bunch of things during this process but one thing to NOTE: Cygnus White ( which is on the card in picture ) was NOT the color of ALL the early roof colors, maybe none. That is yet to be determined. I know there has been a bunch of great work done by alot of MUD members over the years. I am just adding my 2 cents based on what I just found out. ALSO attached for whomever needs the info is a picture of the FORMULA PPG for FJ40 " LILY WHITE " T-403 # 1. During my research I found out there were two LILY WHITE formula's and I am positive that the early cruisers were painted with both, causing me some confusion. The # 2 formula has alot more sandy yellow in it as you can see in the picture. I was able to dig out a very NICE sample piece of steel revealing my original paint ( that the hunter did not get to with his blue brush ) as a sample for my paint mixer friend. Big thanks to Chuck at Temecula Valley Paint for his time and effort that went into assisting me with getting roof, bezel and body color correct on my 1962 restore. I posted a pic below of him after getting permission. Thanks Chuck. His Formula, based on my clean Cruiser part that was hidden in the Barn for 50 years basically, was a success and a perfect match to the LILY WHITE T-403 # 1. The number 1 formula was NOT popping up on his computer here in CALIFORNIA, only the more " yellow, sandy color " number 2. So, a clean cruiser part was needed, one showing good clean, non faded original paint. Thank God I found it buried in my cruiser AND I can tell you guys that the color formula is completely accurate, very clean sample. I hope some of my efforts will help others with their early year cruisers. As mentioned, mine is a 1962. Any questions regarding any of these details regarding, ROOF, BEZEL, BODY just let me know. I spent a bunch of time and a little bit of money on working out these samples. It was worth it though. Thanks for everyones help and again, regarding the roof color assist, a special thanks to " My Wife Says No FJ". FJFJFJ

Hello you guys,

Do you happen to know the correct shade or color for the LETTERING ON THE BEZEL of my 1962FJ40? Would like to get that accurate. Thanks, FJFJFJ

FJFJFJ / A few more shots or progress 1962 FJ40

Really glad I am sticking to all stock on my 62 fj40. Am trying to keep everything original, just as it was in 1962. The seat cover in this picture is the original one that was covered for 50 years. It was in perfect condition and made for a fantastic sample to go by when I was getting new ones made. I got lucky there. FJFJFJ

Thanks you guys and please, if you see any details that you know do not match the original 1962 fj40 PLEASE bring them to my attention. I am trying my best to go 100% stock ( even had the original starter rebuilt ) so as you know, the details are what make it great. Thanks. FJFJFJ

1962 fj40 / some progress / before and after engine

Hello you guys,,,,,,,,,,,We are not done yet but am making progress. Should be done with the engine within a week. Slowly putting the whole cruiser back together. It is looking pretty good and I am really glad to see that this restore will actually finish. Trying to do things period correct and keep the cruiser stock. I got it with almost everything in tact so that has been very helpful. I am on a learning curve though. Just a rookie. fjfjfj.

Here are a few more. Will be finished with the restore ( hopefully ) within the next 15 days. That is the plan anyway. Here is a pic in the barn when I found it and after I brought it back to its original " LILY WHITE " factory color. Love the color.

1962 FJ40 restore / a few more pics. Coming along.

This pic is when I found the cruiser in the barn in Steamboat Springs where it was driven from 1962 to 1968 and then parked with busted flywheel teeth and a busted column shifter until 2012 when I bought it. lol.

Thanks HD,,,,,,,,,,,,Hope yours is coming along well. fjfjfj

Well, we were at the dutch landcruiser day lately, and most people said we should not restore our car and keep it as it is. So we are in doubt what we should do. Yours is fantastic, but the non restored original look is also nice. And it will only be non restored once.

So, to be continued... We will first get the mechanical parts working allright.

Well HD,,,,,,,,,,,,,, every old original Land Cruiser that I have owned since 1974 ( total of 22 ) I have kept in its original condition as I usually find them with no cancer rust, great compression, all original paint ( never painted since factory ). When I do find them in this condition I never change them. My 1962 FJ40 I thought was original paint but it wasn't so I decided to restore it. Had it been original paint I would NOT have restored it. So,,,,,,,,,I know what you mean and I think, as I remember, yours is Lily White and is the original paint, correct? Good luck with it either way. It is a real beauty and a rare bird. FJFJFJ.

Sweet Jesus that is a beautiful engine bay. I'm so glad this Cruiser found you and was restored so well. I think I'm in love with your Cruiser...is that wrong? I have a soft spot for corrugated sides, even though I've never owned one.

Thanks Chamba

I really appreciate the kind remark Chamba. I am just trying to do the best I can with this old cruiser. What I am learning is just how time consuming these restorations are. The details. This is my first and I really admire folks that do these on a regular basis. fjfjfj
