Roof needed for 1962 fj40. Mine crushed. Might be able to fix but still looking. California or arizona only cause of heavy shipping costs. Thanks, fjfjfj

Note that only a corrugated hard top cap will fit your 1962, so any hard top cap that came from '61 to mid '65. Starting summer 1965 they changed to the newer style top with the rear corner windows, and those white caps will NOT fit on a pre '65 corrugated top FJ40, or FJ25. Sometimes, a '66 model is actually a corrugated top that was sold and titled in '66, but unless it has a corrugated top, no other top cap will fit. I should point out that there were two types of corrugated sides, one with hi posts, and ones with low posts...'61 to '63 have the high posts.

Hello you guys,,,,,,,,,,,all my seat frames are painted in my 1962fj40. I am restoring the cruiser and want to confirm that the seat frames from factory were painted the same color as the cruiser, the glove box cover was also painted same color as the cruiser?? Also, does anyone know what color the cluster frame is supposed to be on that year cruiser? Mine was painted. Everything got painted. Amazing. fjfjfj

Seat frames were painted body color, as was most everything else...see post #83 above, not 100% sure when the glove box door, and cluster bezel started being painted the darker grey pewter, (I think it was end of 1963 as I know my '64 was the darker pewter) but your 1962 would have been painted body color also.

Don't be so quick to blame the PO for everything....the FJ25 even had the frame painted body color

A pleasure to help when I can :)

I looked at this '62 also, and it is good knowing that you are going to properly restore it :)

Here are a couple pics of early 40s and an early 45 I have found and saved from the web

Suscribed - cool journey!

I have a question about colors since this thread it trying to figure early colors out. Do we know which color Toyota was using as beige in the early sixties? Sundune White or Volcanic Beige? The beige used wasn't Colorado Beige unless in 70 Toyota wasn't using Colorado Beige like the chart shows. Anyway last year I bought a 70 from the original owner along with a bunch of cruisers parts he had. The 70 was his second FJ40. He and his father both bought new 40 at the same time. He wasn't sure of the year he was in early stages of Alzhiemer's. The FSM and two owner's manuals were from 63 so I assume it was in 63. The bumperettes which were body color in 63 were removed from both cruisers and stored away in boxes. These seems more grey then the color on the 70 which seems almost a perfect match for the my early 76. Depending on how Toyota did the color it's either Dune Beige 72-75 or Beige 76-83. :meh:

Starting a thread in teh 25 section for the early FJ40s might be a good idea to see if we can track what colors Toyota really imported on the early FJ40s in the US market.

On paint I would use a simple single stage paint. Any vehicle I've seen with clear coat the hood and top are the first things to go. On these old single stage paints you just keep using rubbing compound until your completely rub the paint away. Both these beige cruisers have been in AZ their whole life. The 70 in a carport the 76 parked outside in Phx until I bought it in 06. No way would I have been able to rub it out after the clear coat started to go.

Wow, I just stumbled on this thread. Nice find and cool '62!

I have a '62 FST and it is green, and red and black....

I would live to get the "modern" code for Volcanic beige from you if possible.

Here's a pic I took today of the FST.

Oh yeah my guage cluster and glove box are painted same color as truck. I plan on painting seat frames same color too. Bumperettes and Rear Taillight frames painted body color too from what I understand.

fjfjfj / NICE CRUISERS!!!!

Hello you guys,,,,,,,,,,,,,Living in the Past, those are two beautiful cruisers in that garage. My favorite color actually. I have decided to paint my 1962 Volcanic Beige. I happened to get my hands on an original paint chip chart which was given to me so I was able to see the original Toyota colors from the early 60's for not only Land Cruisers but all Toyota's. Below is a picture of my 1964 FJ40. This paint is ALL ORIGINAL, never re-painted since factory. So, it will be interesting to follow you guys and find out more info as regards to the old colors. Thanks again for your assist everyone. I am moving ahead slowly on the restore of my 1962. My bumperettes were not on the cruiser when I received it but I am hearing that they also were painted the color of the cruiser back in 1962. I will do the same. I want to stay as close to stock as possible. Again, below is a pic of my 1964 that I am just leaving alone. Love the old patina. Gotta figure out how to cut and paste it on here. Thanks, fjfjfj

O yea, thanks KY LONGHUNTER for the heads up on the bumperettes. Does anyone have pics of painted bumperettes that they could post up here? Thanks, FJFJFJ

Funny. Living in the Past's 1976 was outside and appears to have faded to become alot the same color as what we came up with by adding white to Dune Beige to find Volcanic Beige. We tried to hunt down a usuable code but could not so we just used that incredibly non faded chip chart as a base, then took dune beige and added some white. A perfect Volcanic Beige appeared. I assume his amby door cruiser in the garage is Dune Beige? Is that correct? A faded dune beige which now looks like Volcanic Beige. At least I think so. It's all pretty wild to me. Great learning experience. Seems the sun acts like a bit of white. Anyway, just noticed that. Should be interesting. I noticed my 1964 looks like desert sand light brown now after years of fading.

QUESTION: My cruiser has a crushed roof but has that really cool VENT. I have found another roof but it does not have a vent. HAS ANYBODY OUT THERE ever cut a hole in their " ventless " roof and grafted in a VENT? I would like to keep mine original but that roof is toast. THANKS, fjfjfj

couple more pics for you...two great restorations, and the old ad again.

Take a good close look at the old ad again...just about everything thing was painted body color until '63!!

The second picture is Chris's sweet '64, notice the bumperettes, and the reproduction of the old original TOYOTA sticker.

The Last pic is Bradshaw's cool '62, running the old school army tires.

As for the top...it is two layers of fiberglass sandwiching some foam. The amount of work to graft that vent on, might be as much work as having your top fixed. Why not remove the cap off the '62, and bring it in to a local boat shop to see if they can fix it for a decent price?

EDIT: BTW...nice looking '64, you have any more pics of it?

No vehicle to gop with it but this weekend I should be able to post pictures of some factory painted beige bumperettes. Two and a half sets, not sure the story on the extra one. But these have been in boxes stored in a garage since the early sixties. Still stored in a garage now.

I would have to double the check the production date on the 76 but it's either Sept. or Oct of 75. They is some history with the 76. Only 4,500 miles on it. still has the original floor mats front and rear. The interior floor doesn't look that much different than exterior color. Both the 70 and 76 seem to have more yellow than the early bumperettes which look to have more grey. Of course you have to take everything I say with a grain of salt. While I'm not color blind I am shade blind.

While I haven't done this I plan to at some point. One of my 61s has a crushed top in the frontit does have a operating vent in the back. I have another top that has no vent. It's rain gutter it cracked at the B pillar but the fiberglass is in good shape. I hope to make one good top with a vent. I will say I like to plan ahead. I picked the non vent top up in 94. The cruiser with crushed top only a few years ago.

That is the 61 on the left. It doesn't look like much but hey it does have the factory winch. They say the first step to a cure is admitting you have a problem.:bang:

Living in the Past,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Amazing only 4500 miles on that cruiser!! And the rainbow of colors on those early year cruisers. Extremely cool. You do plan ahead don't you. ------------------ My wife said no FJ, Thanks for the pics. Just wonderful work on those two cruisers. I appreciate the extensive knowledge from you guys and so many on this forum. Helps this rookie to learn faster then otherwise possible. Will send along more pics of the 64 when I get a chance. Thanks. FJFJFJ

Sorry Guys,
Been away from this thread for too long ;-)

fjfjfj - As I said in PM, I am a fan of single stage. Very forgiving to spray (especially with ALL of the little bits, easy to touch up and repair and not so damned shiny. Our rigs werent meant to be shiny ;-)

Thanks on the wiper motor inspection. I have an odd pair that came with my rig. The motor that hangs low is obviously Toyota and an exact replica of the other one in all ways EXCEPT how it mounts up. Since I rebuilt them both I confirmed the internals are identical.

Living in the Past
Closing the loop on colors - my 64 was originally a blue, capri? You need help restoring a rig ;-)

Dean - Man, those pics of unmolested rigs ALL HAVE THE VENT FLAP KNOB's!!! I need one!! That was like rubbing my face in it there man!!! ;-)

Love this - fjfjfj. Thanks for the great pic of the colors with Sulfur Yellow there ;-) You will love the Yoko's btw.

Subscribed now so I wont miss the action and can get you more timely replies.

Turns out my bumperettes are two different colors. One is pretty close to the Colorado Beige. The other is lighter. Three of the lighter and two of hte darker. The chart shows Colorado Beige started with the 68 model but those bumperettes were pewter. My early 68 still has all the original paint when I bought it in 74 and the bumperettes were pewter. It appears pre 68 Toyota used at least two beiges.

The two different bumperettes next to the 76. The vehicle sat outside most it's life and has only been waxed once after I bought it (got to love the single stage paint.) The matches about as well as it did on the 70.

HELLO YOU GUYS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,My paint chip chart from Toyota shows the match to be volcanic beige. On my paint chip chart coronado beige is too dark. Volcanic beige is dead on. But, I do understand that I am looking at your PICS and not seeing the actual bumperettes so I know there are variables. I am just comparing to this very cool actual original chip chart that I just got. Anyway, maybe that helps a bit. Who knows. Your right, I think a few shades of Beige were used. Remember to get a perfect Volcanic Beige we just took Dune Beige and added a touch of white and it really then matched the chip perfectly. Thanks for putting up these bumperettes. fjfjfj
