Im goin to rebuild my heater box in my 82. Do i need to remove the core and box all in one or does the cover just come off with the 4 screws. I looked for a thread couldnt find one.

The core is inside the box and all will be removable with those 4 screws.

Ok think i got it figured out. Just have to be ready for coolant when i disconnect from below the dash

Excellent find man!!!! I know my core is in good shape i get great heat out of it. Just all the foam on the door is shot.

This is good to know!

If you are going to go the same route as I did and leave the heater core hooked-up, I'd suggest you have one of these to remove the two rear screws for the heater top.

Had I not known those two little screws were there, I'd probably would have damaged the heater top/vent.

Finally getting around to doing this tomorrow... haha

If i pull it core and all how much coolant should i expect to come out of the 2 hoses once i discountect them? I was gonna leave the core intack and remove just the box. I know the core is good it puts out lots of heat.

All the coolant that resides above the heater core. In other words, half of the radiators worth.

I used 1/2” brass plugs from the plumbing section at my local Ace Hardware when I pulled my heater core. Pull the fittings and plug the hose immediately with minimal coolant loss.

Hell, I even drove around for a couple of weeks with it like that.

I just took it off couple weeks ago from my 42.

Pull out the hoses from the engine bay and blow pressure air to the other one. You can get all the water out from the both cores. Then just take the whole thing out (4 bolts), it’s always good to clean the core.

Couple of vise grips on the hoses just in front will probably be even less coolant loss and not have to rush installing the plugs. Personally would rather restore the heater as a whole on a bench verses working inside a tight cab. Since I'm a cruiseraholic would restore a spare heater and install when pull the other one.

Yes chances are ill just pull it core and all i have a rebuild kit. i also have a spare box i might drop that core off tomorrow and have it flushed so all is ready to roll.

Used vise grips to clamp both hoses ontop the engine and pulled the whole thing maybe had a cup of coolant come out. Glad i pulled it all the core is pretty dirty inside judging from the crap that spilled out.

I just got fed up hearing it rattle and it no longer heats because I think the pull is jammed as well. To prevent 1/2 radiator of spill I just disconnected the in/out from the block. The spill is probably 2ft length of hose at most.

I’ll grab photos of the gross box. But one fun thing to note, my Aussie friends used to store ammo in there, so a shell dropped out while starting this disassembly. I expect lots of Aussie dirt…. Lol

Photos to come.
