I have been wanting to rid my poor Cruiser of it's 350 for quite a while now. I bought a low mileage 2F 5 years ago. Then about 3 years ago I bought and ended up parting out a damaged fj80. I kept the 3FE and all it's parts. Two years ago, I bought a 4 speed and split case so I could run an H55 eventually. Finally I had most of the parts, and then... I spent the last year building a shop, so I have a place to actually do major work like an engine swap. Kind of backwards I guess, but life hasn't exactly gone to play for the last few years.

But.. it's finally time. My 350 is running worse then ever. My friend and I want to do Alaska in 2020 in our 40s... and it's important to me, that it happens in 2020, as my dad went to Alaska in 1980 in his FJ40, and I really want to do it 40 years later. I think it would be really cool. I also still have the tent he used on that trip and would for sure take it and use it.

The 2F and 3FE head were at my parents house, 15 minutes away, so yesterday I went to go get them, so I could bring them to the shop, and start working on it.. and a minor disaster struck. While loading the engine into the back of my truck, the strap slipped and caused the engine to shift and then fall off the hook. It fell out of the back of the truck, landed on the engine stand, and did a back flip onto the front of the engine. I was pissed to say the least. It landed hard.

Got it home and just put it in the shop and walked away I was so upset.

However, today I pulled the harmonic balancer off and checked the crank, and it is fine. Even the harmonic balancer it's self looked OK, just the pullys were smashed pretty much flat. Oh well, minor set back in the grand scheme of things.

First thing is first, I am going to degrease and paint the block. Then new gaskets all around. Then
hopefully this week, I am going to find a shop to go through the head. Although the block was low mileage, and came front a running driving truck, the head came out of a engine with a bad rod knock, and a bad headgasket. I want to make sure it's not warped or cracked and might as well go have it gone through before sticking it on the block for real.

Once that is all done, I will start mixing and matching my brackets and accessories. My goal is to use a GM CS140 alternator, my York air compressor, and have room for a AC compressor for Vintage air down the road. This might take some doing, we'll see.

Pulled the head back off today, cleaned up some stuff. Started shopping around for gaskets, head gasket, talking to machine shops. Not super productive day, but at least got some stuff figured out.

I think tomorrow I am going to start trying to start trying to sort out the accessories, figure out how things fit, where I want them and what will work where.

Wow , that looks like it hit hard. I would check the runout on the crank before spending too much time on that engine.

A fj60 AC compressor makes a good air compressor fyi. Might be easier to fit than a york. They aren't quite as fast as a york but still pretty good.

Thing is... I really, really, really like my Yorks. :) I am sure I can get it to fit. I am in a presmog FJ40 so I have the smog pump spot to work with. I spent a good amount of time last night, looking at pictures of how people had stuff laid out of different 2F and 3FE and 2FE builds, and I'm pretty sure I can make it work the way I want to. I might need to fab some new brackets and space stuff differently to keep belts all lined up, but I think it will work just fine.

Well, after starting to put it all together today, I ran into a huge problem. I am missing all the bolts. I had them all in baggies after taking apart the 3FE, and they are all gone. I have no idea why they were not in the rubbermade with the rest of the parts, but I am pretty stressed about them, as that's going to be VERY expensive if I have to go buy all new bolts for the intake, exhaust, and all the accessories.

On the accessories, I had orginally thought I would use the 3FE brackets... however, they are kind of a paint and the 2F ones are a lot cleaner and simpler. On top of that, since I am going to keep my CS140 GM alternator, and want to run a Saganaw PS pump anyway... I am already going to have to do some customization to them all, I might as well start simple. On top of that, so many of the 3FE parts tie into the water pump, and the 3FE water pump doesn't fit the 2F block... so it makes sense to just use all the 2F stuff and modify stuff to fit it where I want it.

I was half way through mocking up stuff, and tired to cut the tip of my finger off. So I kind of lost steam between that and the missing bolts. I'll hopefully be able to find those bolts. I am hoping they are in the container somewhere and just got stuck in the wrong spot.

Once I get everything figured out, I will pull it all off again, and start sandblasting and painting everything that needs it. It's going to at least start off clean and pretty. Even if it will all be stained red by the great foothill clay soon enough.

It looks way cooler with the 2F valve cover too. :)

How to Restore an Exhaust Manifold

try this on your exhaust/other cast iron parts. Minimal prep required - just wire brush/degrease. I sprayed mine into a small cup and then brushed it on since my exhaust was already mounted but you could spray it on too. It won't flake and burn off like most exhaust paints. Only problem is it can't be painted over.

Slip Plate is also the coating i used in between my spring packs before reassembling them

Nice work! I had goats steal 1fze cam bolts out of my barn where I thought they were safe. Another mudder sent me a bunch of decent used ones. Maybe you can get the same service from someone with a scrounge.

Oh man, freakin goats! They have to be somewhere....

Huh, I will look into that. Thank you. Everything got a little rusty waiting for me to get back to it.

Whew.. found most of the bolts today. Still some missing, but I have boxes of Toyota bolts laying around from a 4runner and FJ80 I parted out, so lots of random extras for the new still missing. I found the intake and exhaust ones which were the ones that concerned me.

I also quickly figured out, the 3FE accessories are annoying, and the 2F ones are much more simple and will work better for me. Started getting stuff mocked up. I am going to use a CS140 GM alternator, so it's just sitting in there right now, I need to modify the tensioner, but otherwise it looks like it will bolt on easy. Replacing the pully of course. Right now it looks like the GM shaft is bigger, so might have to make a little bushing on the lathe and weld it in. We'll see. The AC bracket, I am missing. I will have to buy that maybe, or make one, but again, I'll figure that out later.

Oh the other side, I am going to most likely end up building two custom brackets. I want to run the Saganaw pump, on the bottom of the engine, which.. at one point, I had the a GM pump there on my F engine before I did the V8 swap. I am hoping it's still on that old block laying in the field at my parents house. Going to go check tomorrow. If not, I'll just make one, looks easy enough to do. On the top, I will mount the York compressor. It actually looks very easy there.

I am going to spend tomorrow trying to make the brackets for the custom stuff I need to do. Hopefully by the end of the week, I will have all the accessories mounted and figured out and working the way I want them to, and can take everything back apart, and start sand blasting and painting stuff.

On other note... I am really wondering if I would rather do a 1HZ and if I am being dumb for not just doing that in the first place. I have all the parts I need for the 2FE though. I liked my F engine fine, and really like the 2F in my buddies 79 FJ40, and the 3FE in my brother's FJ62.... I have no doubt I'll like this motor. But... I really think a diesel would be even better then this. We'll see I guess. Still going to build the motor no matter what.

Dang! Wish I had know about this a month ago. Just painted my manifolds... I guess when they need to be repainted I can give this a try.

Today was progress, slow progress, but I was moving forward. Biggest sticking point is the Saganaw pump, in the lower, passenger side spot is going to be a hard one. I got the massive GM alternator figured out pretty quick. And started on the York mount. Nothing major today, but hopefully tomorrow or this weekend I can knock out the PS pump mount, and then get everything lined up, and done for real. Right now I have random bolts everywhere, just kind of mocking it all up.

Then I can start it all apart and start cleaning and painting it! I am excited for that part.

I am going to shorten this a bit, it doesn't need to be so long and will look cleaner if I shorten it, but it works.

Started trying to design the York part of this whole thing. Just cutting it out of whatever I have laying around for scrap until the get the shape right, then I will cut it out of 3/8 and 1/4 inch plate and build it for real. This one will be stationary since the PS will be the tensioner on this belt.
