New has been discontinued for some time...

and here(for reference) is a pic of the "almost" non-existent 40 series 5 speed top plate

Curiously, what are the differences between the 2 top plates? Why prefer one over the other? Thanks.

The shifter cane tower is roughly 3" rearward compared to the 40 series top plate...

The H55 and split case are in, I have just ran into a couple other little snags...nothing to do with the H55....just a bent front axle housing.

I will update this when I get a chance.

It's just amazing to see how much work went into this mod. Great work.

How are things going?

Took it down the road today at 70MPH....

Cruises right along.

I will get more pictures up of the cross member, new exhaust/headers and of the modifications that I am currently doing to the tunnel cover for the shifters....

Hi All:

Very cool, Steve!

What do you think of the H55F versus the H42 after driving a FJ40 with both?

How would you rate this tranny swap on the "banana" scale? :D

Thanks again for sharing - great thread!

Alan-On the banana scale, swapping a 4 speed for a 5 speed with a t-case rebuild is not that hard. Maybe a 3 on a bad day. It is time consuming, just not that hard.

In a 40, things are complicated by the cross-member and e-brake, but there is no machine work or really difficult/impossible problems.

It isn't needed in a 40 though, I mean, how fast are you going to go? It's a perfect compliment for a 60.

Great to hear, so how did you over come the hand brake drum.

love to see the crossmember

So here are some update pictures…sorry this has not been kept current. I am getting my ass handed to me at the shop and in front of the computer is not the first place that I think about being when I have a moment of consciousness….

The 60 series frame brackets only required the driver side holes to be modified. So I elongated them with a carbide on a .250” die grinder, and then welded the other side of the hole closed, and ground it flush again. The passenger side fit like it was meant to be there, and really, this whole thing went very smooth considering what I had been told, and even if I would have had to modify/narrow up a 60 series cross member piece, it would not have been that big of a deal, and could be done without a lot of screwing around.

I had to plate the frame where the 60 series frame cross member pieces were going to be welded to the frame, so that I could get sufficient welding surface area to ensure that they remain attached for many years. The center piece (black in color) is a 40 series specific part that a friend in AZ sent up to me. (Thank you Rick! ) I used .250” thick material to plate the frame.
