My GX470 w the problematic 4.7 V8 and Torsen AWD got 13-14.5 MPG. This was also on highway tires. That thing was a total pig

I accept this vehicle for all its deficiencies and capabilities. It’s good seeing Toyoda innovate and bring products to market that invoke at least a modicum of desire. The products over the last 10-15 years looks like something out of a child anime show.
I get 14.5 mpg overall in my 2013 Land Cruiser -- 12.5 mpg city, 17-18 mpg highway. IIRC, my 2003 V8 4Runner (very similar to your GX470) got around 15 mpg overall, so similar to your GX.

I think the GX 550 fuel economy rating is a bit disappointing, but I will still test drive it once they start arriving at the dealership.

Interesting, I've gotten 14 mpg towing my 3,000 pound camper with my GX470. Usually it's 11-13 mpg towing, with bikes on top. It's lifted with ATs. I can get 17-18 mpg unloaded on backroads, around 16 mpg running 80 mph on the highway. I have some mods....but still....it got basically the same MPG when it was totally stock.

Surely you must be facetious calling the 2UZ-FE "problematic".

I want to somewhat both backtrack and apologize for derailing this thread.

I love the fact that we have both a distribution on what's being built and more concrete details on the pricing.

Instead of focusing on the MPG in terms of fuel efficiency, I think it might be better to think of the argument on how much more power and torque is being generated w/out overly sacrificing fuel economy (as other members have previously stated above)...yes, this brings up previous conversations we have (re)hashed.

The GX definitely leans more sport than utility.

Disappointed in the MPG…

Here’s to hoping the Hybrid engine in the Land Cruiser variant will be better, MPG wise.

I have no need to tow so that isn’t a concern but I would like to just own one vehicle to commute and 4 wheel with.

Biggest reason I sold my 200 series was gas prices. Dumping $700 on gas was absurd.

Supposedly 27mpg. They pulled that from the published US info because it hasn't undergone formal EPA testing yet, but its still listed as 8.7 L/100km on the Canada site
gas tank size anyone? Sure, mpg is a pertinent topic but range is far more important if you want to go overtrail.

I doubt it will be bigger than a 200 series. I assume the LC variant tank will be slightly smaller due to the hybrid battery setup taking space
Most likely the same size tank. The hybrid battery is contained inside the cabin, so no affect on fuel tank space, just kills cargo space.

I think that 27mpg is only going to be on the entry level model with the lowest weight and 245 series tires. I suspect the typical LC grade will be more like 23-24mpg

Way better than a 200!

If the 250 platform shares the 300 series' tank (80 L, or 21.13 gal), then the turbo hybrid would see 570 miles of range given Canadian-estimated 27 combined mpg, and the V6 would see 360 miles of range given EPA-estimated 17 combined mpg.

Here's how the more recent US market series would stack up:

Series / YrFuel CapacityEst. Comb. MPGFuel WeightTotal Fuel WeightRange Miles/lb Fuel Weight$/mile ($5/gal)
80 / 9225.1011.006.10153.11276.101.80$0.45
100 / 200225.4013.006.10154.94330.202.13$0.38
200 / 202025.4015.006.10154.94381.002.46$0.33
250 / 2024 (TH)21.1327.006.10128.89570.514.43$0.19
250 / 2024 (V6)21.1317.006.10128.89359.212.79$0.29

Efficiency, range, payload, and operational cost are all related and important.

Check back in on gas prices in a decade or so, and cheers  for having identified any reason to move to the south.
Why would I do that? It's been basically flat around $4 adjusted for inflation since the 1960s....

I've also looked at my income vs gas since 2008. My income has gone up 300%, gas went up 20%. No matter how I slice it, gas is and has been cheap.

The south has its problems, so it's just about figuring out which type of problems one is willing to tolerate. It sure was odd seeing all those Cali people moving to Texas and all those new yokers moving to Florida.

I just wish they'd all stop moving to Montana. The Yellowstone series really fawked us. The sad thing is that it's basically changed forever. There's no going back. I need to get together with Pocahontas to commiserate. An IT asshat from Colorado just moved in next to my in-laws ranch and the first thing they did was wait until they were out of town and rip down about 100 feet of fence. Now I have to sue them, get an injunction and probably a restraining order, get the sheriff involved. It's a whole giant PITA to deal with. But - maybe I'll get some punitive damages out of it and I can buy some cheap gas?
