Finally..GX550 MPG:

Evolved Powertrain

The 2024 GX will debut in the US with 1 evolved and powerful powertrain.

GX 550 (Full-Time 4WD) - will come standard with a highly capable and efficient twin-turbocharged

3.4L V6 engine paired with a 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission. The twin-turbo V6 produces

an improved 349 horsepower, outperforming the previous generation V8’s 301 horsepower, and torque

output also improves to a massive 479 lb.-ft. The twin turbochargers deliver steady and consistent

acceleration to easily control power delivery in both on and off-road scenarios. Towing capacity has

increased on all grades. Customers will receive up to 8,000 lbs. for Premium, Premium+ and Overtrail

grades, up to 7,145 lbs. for Luxury grade, and up to 6,955 lbs on Luxury+ grade. All grades will receive a

standard tow hitch receiver. This vehicle offers an improved MPG at 15/21/17 MPG (CTY/HWY/CMB)

21 Hwy is not bad for a big AWD box.
With power like that. Not a drastic improvement on MPG over a 460 but a big improvement in capability/acceleration.

Hahaha this 21mpg will quickly drop to 15mpgs once you start bolting on the grocery grabber roofrack and cart front and rear bumper protection for the errant grocery carts.

For my use case (remote touring), and for a new vehicle generation in the year 2024, 15 mpg is disqualifying. It will almost certainly require additional aftermarket fuel capacity. On-dirt efficiency is barely improved over the Land Cruiser petrol motors of three decades ago.

The LX is rated at 17/22/19 combined. It’s basically the same box shape (maybe more aero?), and +60hp at least on paper. Marketing wizards at work? “Spend 48% more and get more hp AND better economy!”

It is odd that the GX550 gets worse fuel economy than the LX600, given that the 600 is marginally larger and heavier.

I still wonder if that 17 combined rating is based on the Overtrail with the larger/heavier tires? Some MFG seem good about separating out the MPG ratings based on actual trim specs (think raptor vs regular F150)

If not, its not very impressive - my 2010 GX460 was EPA rated for 15 city, 20 hwy, 17 combined

I would not expect good MPG with this level of power. At this point it's not far off from a Bronco Raptor (418 hp/440 ft-lbs and 15/16 mpg). I am also sure it has Toyota's typical conversive tune that scarifies power and MPG for longevity, and probably leaves a lot of both on the table. Even my dirt-simple N/A 2UZ responded very well to an aftermarket tune - who knows how much better this 3.4 TT could be once it's unlocked.

if you want MPG, the LC250 with the TT4/hybrid would be the choice. We should be happy that we'll have options for both power and MPG in the 250/550 platform.

Production starts mid-December and should be stateside in early February (assuming the ship carrying the cars doesn’t sink)
Finally some dates.

From pricing sheet:
All GX grades will be arriving in dealerships in the first quarter of 2024.

Looks like they were benchmarking the LC80 in fuel economy too. Haha.

For me - 17mpg is not good for a 2024 midsize SUV. I know there's a bronco raptor that gets similar mpg - with 70hp more, 4.70 diffs, and 37" tires! If it was getting 17mpg on 37's - I'd be impressed. Sequoia is 21/24/22. A Tahoe with a 6.2L v8 with 420hp/460tq is roughly the same mpg.

It's a good thing that Toyota is also selling a hybrid version soon.

I’m so baffled w the comparing MPG between vehicles. The Braptor is also smaller w part time 4WD. The 550 uses a full time AWD utilizing a mechanical Torsion system with much greater parasitic loses than a clutch or fluid based system.

Bronco Raptor is significantly wider and taller. And it has none of the aerodynamic plastics. I suspect it has a significantly higher Cd and runs 37's. I'd expect to give up about 4-5mpg from the GX to run 4.56 diffs and 37's.

But we can just look at the 4Runner. It gets the same mpg from a similar size vehicle on a 20 year old platform with an old engine and 5 speed transmission. Even in awd form with likely the same transfer case. Add a supercharger and you'll get similar power to the GX with similar mpg. I'm just not seeing much improvement for all the added complexity and cost of the turbo v6. My 2015 4Runner EPA is 17/22/19. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a meaningful efficiency improvement after 20 years of time to work on it.

But the Torsen doesn't overheat and doesn't wear out -- it just works.

I'm the one who originally brough up the Bronco Raptor comparision. They are also known for terrible build quality and long-term engine problems. And they can't tow 8,000 pounds.

If you want fuel economy in a Toyota buy a hybrid. If you want something durable and powerful, but the non-hybrids. I have both and wouldn't have it any other way.

My GX470 w the problematic 4.7 V8 and Torsen AWD got 13-14.5 MPG. This was also on highway tires. That thing was a total pig

I accept this vehicle for all its deficiencies and capabilities. It’s good seeing Toyoda innovate and bring products to market that invoke at least a modicum of desire. The products over the last 10-15 years looks like something out of a child anime show.
