Howdy All -

My factory rack is removed and am in the process of finding the right load bars and towers to support my rocket box. Question: Is there a more low profile system that attaches to the rain gutters than the Yakima 1A? The Rocket Box is going to be a tough reach way up on the roof as it is and if I can save a couple inches then I'm all for it.

I appreciate your help - Thanks.

Tom

I've got 1As and they're way there, my cruiser didn't have a factory rack and I aquired a NIB factory rack just for the rocket box. I have not installed it due to the fact that alot of people hate the factory rack because it rusts out, and I am in between throwing up an arb rack and going with a rocket box. For my applications, I like the box. It's dry, secure, light weight, durable and semi aero dynamic.

Good luck a post what you find, I know the bow of the roof is a major reason for the 1As, you would have to find a Yakima dealer that had some floor samples that you could take out to your LC and do a trial & error exercise.

This could be a solution to my rack dilema, find a low rise Yakima mount for the roof rocket and NOT install the factory rack and then get the ARB for all other applications. Hmmm...

Good Luck!

From the center of the roof to the top of the yakima bar what is the height?

I have been toying with the idea of buying two pairs of the African Outback Gutter rail load bars from Slee and fabbing up my own rack... With a little ingenuity and $$$ it could happen. http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/products_loadbars.htm

(African Outback full rack has 6 points of contact with the gutters, figure 8 is BETTER. And cheaper depending on the rest of the construction.)

FYI, you can rely on the Yakima and Thule recommendations as to fit. That's their business so there's no need for trial and error. Just a suggestion when you buy crossbars, purchase them longer if you don't mind them sticking out a few inches because the extra length is very useful.

I have these and they are great. If you want low profile this is the way to go.

For the love of god don't put the factory roof rack on your 80!

whne I made my J -Moose rack, i could not find any decent rain gutter clamps.

I went to a local fab shop & for less than $50 bucks they sold me a 48" piece of 3/16th's with 2 45 degree bends.

I made a set of 8 rain gutter clamps for my FZJ80 and a set of 6 for the FJ40 out of it.

If you can get a quote for exactly the height you need, that is less than what you would pay to buy something, pm me & I can fill in the detials of my little fab project.

P.S. if you have a sun roof be sure to allow space for it to raise up.

Thanks Everbody -

I want the African Outback System from Slee, but they are on backorder for two months as of two weeks ago. That's what got me looking at other avenues. I do not have the skills with metalworks to fab my own pieces. It looks like I need to be patient and wait for the Slee to get the Outback system. Patience is not my strong suit. :o

I'm sticking w/ the 1a's and probably going to add the Basketcase to the middle to add space and try to fabricate that for the spare-it can sink lower than adding the LoadWarrior. I'm glad to not have the factory rack from what I've seen in the rust issues. I have my Rocketbox on a Mitsu Montero and it's not that much of a stretch

My thule bars are 2 7/8 inches from the top of the bar to the top of the center of the roof. I think I have the 300 gutter feet.

I'm running 4" Con-Fer mounts and actually have to use spacers on the crossbars in order to clear the roof strips....

I could probably go an inch lower if I remove the strips and spacers....

Yeah, what he said. If you go with Thule and want the low mounts, they are model 300.

I got some from 4 wheel parts. They have gutter mounts that are pretty universal for racks. They come in 3-4in and 6 in. I got the 3-4 in set. I mounted it to my outback rack and it sits about an inch from the center of my roof. They are pretty heavy duty clams and came with 6 in the set. Farly priced as well.

If you can find the short ones. The regular ones that you can easily find are really tall.

I had ordered the quick-n-easys from the link and they were the long ones - thanks to your warning I was able to catch it and not have to sent 'em back. I owe you a

It looks like I'm going with the Thule 300 mounts, and 58" bars. 100 bucks cheaper than the African Outback system, and looks to be a similar profile. Again, I appreciate everyones input.

I've got some of the short quick n easy mounts... just threw them on the 80 and realized that a straight bar will hit the stock roof strips. I'm planning to add about a 3/4" spacer so that nothing rubs.

Hey did you guys all get gutter mounts yet? A guy in our club put together a group purchase of super beefy Con-Ferr replicas (not quick-n-easy) and I think he's still got some, if anyone's interested. Here's a link to the thread: http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/showthread.php?t=4925

Cost is $132 for a set of 6. And they look like the pic below, but are in focus  best way to get in is PM Groucho, either here or on the RS site.

edit: found another picture, in focus but further way. But combine the two and you get the idea.. :)

Snake Eater: I think that those are quick'n'easy, not Conferr.

Nakman: seems a good price on what might be good clamps. I think I need to have a few drinks to see them more clearly. :)
