Guide for better MPG?

I get 16-17 on hwy;. I actually see a good difference in mileage when I use Marvel Mystery Oil.

Just filled up this morning and I got 8.7 mpg.

ANywhere between 10 and 17 mpg. Depends on the driving. When I am driving off-road (dirt rather than paved) I get less mpg but WAY more smiles per mile.

I have averaged right around 10.5 to 11. I', not looking for for 20 or anything like that, but 13 would be nice. If I can get that for under 300 bucks or so, I would be happy with the ROI. I have a friend with a 94 4runner that claims electric fans bumped him up 2-3 MPG alone.

My area doesn't have emissions, so fiddling around with that (I own a welder and can kinda use it) may be a solution, but I don't want to waste time and especially money if it's unnecessary.

And YES, I do know owning my wonder beast truck isn't going to be super cheap, I just wanted to know what people have done to improve thier range.

^ to improve range... add subtank.

to improve (ignore) MPG - stop recording your odometer on each fill up.

cheers,
george.

You totally need to do this:
ecomod.webp

these comments are exactly what I expected...thanks for not disappointing mud! Oh, and I get 14 no matter how I drive...which means the power button is always on!

37s, front bumper, sliders, winch , spare 37, 5.29s, no third row seats, no second row seats. recent tuneup new ntk o2s, full emissions delete including cats, timing bumped up to 7, last time on hwy got 15mpg .

I think we have this all backwards. Build the cruiser, if it's heavy, that's great! Instead of going for better MPG, I'm trying to get under 10. That means I am enjoying it the way that I should. Drive it like you stole it!

Buy an Ultragauge and monitor your 'Instantaneous MPG'. That will be the best thing you can do so you can learn how to maximize those numbers.

Edit: Your LC will need to be OBD2 I believe for the Ultragauge to work.

OP: Ok, so a smog delete for a 91-92 apparently does wonders (cheaply) for MPG. Is there any such mods on an FZJ 80, particularly a 93 or 94 (Pre obd 2)? I have searched the forum for MPG and Milage, and can't really find any great answers.

cheers,
george.

Actually I would be very interested in how to do a proper smog, catalytic converter delete. Would I just gut out the cats so there is nothing there (or weld a pipe in their place) and then get mil eliminators on the o2 sensors to trick the computer so the CEL doesn't come on?
Where would I even get MIL eliminators for the 80 series?

On 93 94 o2s are in front of cats, so you gut the cats or like what I did was cut them off, then weld in straight pipe. No need to trick o2s

Did you see any performance improvement?

Sounds different I did it so my sliders fit easier, am going to go back to single inline cat, I did it bout 5 years ago

I got a high 16 mpg once or twice. Now I am running around 12.5 mpg on the highway. That's with a fresh head rebuild and a TRD s/c. On a rig with 166k miles and running 31" tires and a winch bumper.
