When do the updates on "Red Guy" start ;)?
Hahaha. Hopefully soon :steer: Way too excited to drive it again. Been over 10 years.

Here are some photos I received yesterday. My uncles are going to be holding it for me in CA until I can get down there in November. I wish I could fly down now and drive it back to Seattle.

Mods I did before I sold it:
1969 front axle with FJ60 knuckles and disc brakes
Chevy S10 master cylinder with firewall adapter
Rebuilt carb by JimC
(crappy paint job)- totally my dads doing
Redid seats with SOR covers and foam

Me working on it after driving it 400 miles from Arcata, CA down to Monterey,CA. Sometime in 2005

That cruiser never let me down once. Going to be a fun reunion. So many things I want to do to it to bring it back up to snuff and preserve it for the next generation.
Plans:
Softtop bows and OEM style softtop
New tires
Full tune up
Refurbish electrical system
Rust abatement on rear sill and surface rust in other areas
Suspension refresh (new shackles, bushings and shocks)

Look how young you are you hippie! ;)

This is going to be a great project!
That wasn’t even the longest it got! Hahaha . You start to turn into a hippie when the whole town is filled with them. :smokin:

This is definitely going to be a fun project. Talk to you soon :D

Great job on your 62!
You have done lots of work in a short time good job!

It’s great that you are getting/found your FJ40. That’s where my cruiser crush started. Wish I could find my old Fj40’s and get at least one of them back.

Been a while with a project update but the cruiser has been fantastic so I am not complaining. One issue I put off for too long is diving into this rust issue on my rear cargo window sill. I of course waited until maybe the last week of warm enough temps here in Seattle to tackle it. Nothing like procrastination! In this case that bit me in the ass with the rust issue.

I had seen some surface rust peeking out from below the gasket on the rear cargo window. I knew that more was waiting deeper inside and I couldn't go another 10 month rainy season without putting a stop to it. So i decided to take out the cargo windows and see what was really going on:

More rust than I had hoped for and after some grinding/sanding and rust converter this is what I was left with... a pin hole

Since I still hope to one day do a full and proper paint job (either me or an actual professional) I decided that the since the rust was ground out/converted I would fill the pitting and pin hole with steel epoxy putty. I laid it down, sanded it smooth and coated the surface in 2K primer:

Temps were in the mid 50s today and with the help of a heater I was able to get my old garage up to 62 degrees. Tonight I laid down three coats of base and three coats of clear. Hopefully it turns out nice tomorrow when I take the paint off.

Since the cargo windows are out I decided to just push through and complete another project that has languished for years.... my OEM cargo sliding windows. Time for those babies to go in. More on that later.

binged read this build thread...great work! did you end up putting the vinyl down in the front too? what do you have laying underneath it to look flat?
Thank you! I got the vinyl in the cargo area laid down, still need to do the front section (next warm weather we have here that is top of the list). The entire floor in the cruiser is covered in a layer of 80mil sound dampener, then a thin layer of closed cell foam, then a layer of MLV. The MLV is what I think is giving the cargo vinyl the flat appearance.

Finally complete 2 years after acquiring these windows from AUS. So happy these are all done and in! I used 3M butyl sealer ribbon and a lot of strong clips to seal them in. Then finished them off with a grey interior lockstrip/trim. The windows are a little hard to slide because all the seals are so fresh but with time they will get a little easier. Now I need to get a dog again to make full use of them. :D
The FJ62 is slowly becoming the US version I wished they offered in the first place....

Big thanks to @NookShneer for help in completing the project. As well as @beno and @cruiserdan for comparing 80 series and 70 series sliding window parts for me.

Looks great! Envious of your new windows. All that's left now is the H55 and cable lockers, to really finish off the "best option" build! ;)

Hahaha, I honestly thought of those two things when I wrote that. Maybe a Harrop E-locker instead. :)

That would be the easier option to source. Cable locked axles are going for $2200 used (before shipping and rebuild costs) While it would be really rad to have a set. I don’t see how the cost/effectiveness breakdown works out.

Hope to take a drive soon and put those to the test!

Replaced the oil pan gasket. What a serious pain in the a$$. Took me a total of 10 hours (not joking) spread over a couple days to get it off, cleaned and bolted back up. Never want to tackle that job again! Decided to throw in Rotella T6 synthetic for the fill up.

I also replaced all the shifter linkage bushings, holy crap what a huge difference! The shifter doesnt wobble at all any more. Shifts smooth and precise. Love it!
Thanks to @beno for helping source the correct OEM parts for the projects.
Now on to other projects!

Think it was about time to swap cold start injectors

Would you happen to have part #’s for the new seals? I have a set enroute from AUS now. They will probably need to be freshened up!
