Brought the Mosely Motors 2F home yesterday, safely cocooned in plastic wrap for the next couple of months. The M416 rides smooth with a 700 lb load in it.

I have been procrastinating on diving into the engine swap. This 80 Build - Anyone recognize this 80 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/anyone-recognize-this-80.1355924/ needed more maintenance than I had expected plus as I worked on it I decided to make a few improvements. Much of the last year has been sorting out this 80 but it's now at a plateau I'm comfortable with regarding maintenance or upgrades.

But summer heat, humidity, and frequent afternoon storms have been and will continue to be the weather pattern for a few more months. My shop ( ) is outside so nice days are needed to accomplish any serious work. To ease some with the heat issue, and perhaps light rain, I purchased a 10x20 ft canopy at Lowes, < $150. Now it's time to finally dig in and swap out the old 2F for a fresh 4.4 Cop Motor.

One year later and the Cop Motor was finally removed from the M416 and unwrapped. @cruiserinsanity helped with this. Swapping a 2F could be done in a weekend, and that's what I keep telling myself. I also know that there will be a myriad of small items and details that need to be addressed. It ain't gonna get done in a weekend. I'll have a week off at Thanksgiving and I expect that will be the time that I really dive into this. Also over this past year a multitude of more important things have come up that have tended to push this to lower priority. .

Curious why the Mosley cop motor over other options? Don't get me wrong, i'm in the "Anti-LS" camp and much prefer to keep toyota motors in Land Cruisers. But, for the price tag, did you consider other alternatives?

I am genuinely curious as to what alternatives you would consider to be equivalent to the Moseley cop motor? I may be in the market for a new motor in the not too distant future and would like to know. Certainly, if I just wanted a plain vanilla rebuilt motor, there are at least a handful of places I can think of. But for a souped up motor, I thought Mosley was the creme de la creme?

1FZ-FE or 1HZ come to mind... I priced out a Mosley cop motor plus sniper and headers, and for a similar price, I'm expecting to swap in a fully rebuilt 1HD-T, which should produce significantly more power.

For example, according to Mosley's website a hi-power 2F puts out ~120 HP and ~166 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels. I believe that a 1HDT with 25 PSI of boost should put out 200 hp and well over 400 ft/lbs

I'm a huge diesel fan, currently have a turbo 1Hz and I'm slowly rebuilding an HDT to swap in it's place. But finding a good HDT, or a rebuilt one isn't cheap, or readily available. Very different animal compared to a "cop" motor that is in hand. And switching from a 2F to the diesel isn't trivial, doable for sure, but not so plug and play, and I imagine the same goes for a rebuilt 1FZ-FE. Sounds like you are pushing your personal preference compared to what @Godwin is doing. You do you :meh:

I started seriously thinking about a "new" motor for this 60 several years ago. The current 2F was rebuilt by a local shop that's no longer in business, and to their credit did a good job because this motor has just over 300k on it and doesn't burn oil. I'll probably drop it into a FJ40 after having the head reworked.

Back to the Mosely motor. At the time the only other shop that I knew of that was doing well respected builds was JimC and he's 600 miles away and busy. I'd talked to Cam a few times prior to getting serious, I'd also been following some of the builds that have received Cop Motors. I've been driving 2Fs for 3 decades, I know the motors, am willing to accept their shortcomings and have found them to be reliable and easy to work on. I'm at a point in my life I don't want to have to learn a new engine platform. This will be the last 2F I have built and I expect it to outlive me. Knowing that this will be the last 2F I'll do I decided to spend the money and have it done well.

I did think about a diesel swap but I don't know diesels. I'd have to find one then either assume it's good to go or have it rebuilt. Then there would likely be modifications needing to be done for a swap, for example any welding and I'd have to find someone to do it.

If I had known Meshal prior to having this 2F done I would have given strong consideration to a 1FZ swap, carbed, not FE, and with a manual transmission.

Two summers ago I did a road trip from Alabama to Arizona and back with the current getting tired 2F and really had no problems, sometimes slow but it's a an old Land Cruiser. I expect this 2F to be good enough plus some.

The carb that's going on it is a new one from overseas that JimC has already tweaked. This in another reason I'm sticking with the 2, I have a JimC carb on it and fires up and runs great even after the years and miles it's been topping this engine.

I don't think that's the correct interpretation of the dyno curves you are referencing on the website but I am certainly not an expert on the subject. According to Toyota's literature the stock 2F was rated at 135 Hp. I think the Hi-power 2F is around 160. It's still a modest gain but should be quite noticeable to have just under 20% more ponies. Probably much more than 20% if you're starting with an older, tired, 2F.

Edit: That could be correct "at the wheels" but not at the engine. Again, I am not sure myself how to exactly interpret the curves that he has posted. Google says you loose around 20% with a manual transmission and 4WD transfer case. 120 "at the wheels" with 20% loss would calculate out to 150 at the engine FWIW.

Cam also sets up the 2F on a stand and runs it to break in the cam and lifters and check for leaks or other issues. When he ran mine he heard a slight tick. I couldn't hear it on the video but in the shop it was clear. He went back in and discovered a slight burr on one of the timing gears, corrected that, put it back together and retested to ensure that the tick was fixed.

there is tremendous value in being able to bolt it in on a Saturday and only have a day or two of vehicle downtime.
