I like the approach of building it out from the original tailgate and providing more space. Does it still use the space within the tailgate, or is it over the top of the tailgate panel?
 
This would be perfect for me as my tailgate is full of reinforcements for the rear mounted spare setup, which eats up a lot of the space inside the lower tailgate that other systems use. Neat idea. Can you post some shots with the tailgate closed, like from inside the truck maybe?

Yes aaaaaaaaaand the drawers wouldn't be able to open even if it did fit ;)

And...I need me some drawers.

And @FloridaFJ80 this is still and AWESOME idea. This is idea for those that haven't done any major mods to their truck yet and could really use the storage. I like it.

@FloridaFJ80 The lid looks like aluminum, the tub looks like galvanized steel and the top looks like a carbon fiber wrap. What is this made from? I have a neighbor that is really short so can't reach very far into his cargo area and I think this could help him.
 
One downside, this would make the tailgate even higher for my dog to jump up and down from, and she's nearly at her limits as it is, lol.
 
Guys on my way to the office. Will have more info shortly. I can build both types of lid to accomadate drawers. Will post better pics soon

It uses the space inside the tailgate similar to the others ones offered here.

Here are some pictures of the storage lid. It is constructed of steel. I will be building one for my 80 on Tuesday. It will be level to the tailgate and they will be painted in black. If you guys are interested let me know!!

Great idea. Would it be possible to make the lid sit more flush with the entire surface, similar to Wagongears? Thought that might look super clean and would make the entire surface more usable. Again awesome as it is, just some thoughts.
