My FJ40 (1976 2F, 4M) is new to me, so I'm just getting to know it. My gas mileage is dismal, a little less than 10 mpg. I have to climb 800 to 1000' every time a drive home, but still this mileage seems very low. What sort of mileage do you get?

I'll beat everyone to the punch with:
- Smiles per mile is all that matters
- if you have to ask
- how's your tune?
- that sounds about right
- go downhill more

-if I was worried about mileage I'd drive a Camry.

10-11 mpg is standard for me, driving it up to 7000 ft from 3500 ft 2-3 times every weekend. 10.78 was my last tank if I remember.

When I had an F it got 16mpg on the highway with 33”s

I get 15mpg with 6.0 LS pushing 37”s making 4x the HP

You just have to enjoy driving it, mpg be danged

So I got my rig in 82. It came with a Delco distributor and a Rochester 2 BBL. A few months later the cast iron exhaust manifold cracked in half, a friend gave me a header. In the summer with the timing jack up to just going out the window I got 25 mpg average between 100 miles at 55mph on the freeway and 100 miles of back country dirt roads at like 35mph or idling along in second gear road hunting. I worked on the carb once. I worked on the dizzy once back in the early 2000's. I just replace the dizzy with a chinesium Delco. Right now I'm getting about 18mpg with the timing more towards normal. I'm going to take the carb apart soon, weather it needs it or not. I bought an heated ultrasonic cleaner and a gallon of carb juice. I also drive with a vacuum gauge. There is a point where the vacuum drops and you don't go any faster - just suck more fuel.

2H, 4H, 4L, flat, uphill, downhill, head wind, tail wind ... 11-12. Averaged 12.12 on the up and back to the Lonestar Roundup last weekend going 60-70 mph per GPS.

I am honestly 8-10 mpg but like was said before I get about 30 SPG/SPM and my soul doesn't feel like it is dying when I drive it. We got rid of our Avalon that was getting a generous 22 mpg for a 2nd gen 4Runner that is getting 14 and my son is happier.

Thanks for the reality check. I'm less concerned about cost of the gas than the back country range. I'm adding fuel capacity, but still 10 MPG limits off grid ambition.

Range is more what I focus on. I would love 500 miles of comfortable fuel range on my 40. No I won’t be driving it 500 miles non stop. However being able to choose when and where I get fuel is always a win.

I try never to let my tank get below 1/4 for fear of sucking up some junk but I do carry a 5 gallon jerry can and sometimes I’ll shove a stupid 2 gal rotopax in there somewhere.

Last I checked I got in the 12-14 range but I drive like a grandparent.

Think of family average mpg not 40 mpg. Get a prius in the family mix.
