Hey Gary. Great resto going

Just acquired a 1983 BJ42 LX myself. Your posts and links to picture are a true asset to the Mud forumn. Well done. This really inpires me to tear into my as soon as it arrives by next Wed.

Job well done and I may have to pick your brain if you get online sometime about somthing I run into unique to the LX.

Heater Hoses

Hey Gary,

You appear to know where to get all these hard to find parts, and as i own an 80, parts aren't too hard to find for me:). However i have a customer (i'm a diesel machanic in ipswich if you ever need a hand) who also has a very neat '83 bj42 lx, and he needs a set of heater hoses. I've tried terrain tamer and local dealers with no luck, hopefully you could help me out/point me in the right dirrection................

Cheers,
Andrew

I don't know what Gary's advice will be but I'd take the old hoses to the hose-bin at your local SupercheapAuto store and buy any hoses you find there that have the same bore-size and that you can cut a section out of to get what you want.
And the hoses to the heater-valve on the firewall you can just cut from straight hose as I recall.

Sorry for butting in .... but I'm a kiwi and you got to make allowances for that.

Hey Andrew,

I think Tom's advice is about the most practical, probably the quickest and cheapest option.

There is a decent toyota parts supplier in Caloundra I think, but I cannot recall their name, I think it is sunshinetoyota (?)

I've had a lot of joy with Amayama trading in Japan - Search for OEM Part - Amayama Trading - it takes a few weeks to get them over here but the postage may be a bugger just for a couple of items.

The other thing is to try toyodiy.com to get the part numbers, search for other models that might use the same part numbers, or at least that will make it easier when trying for replacement parts from one of the auto spares shops.

There are also a few US-based stores - Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Toyota Auto Parts and Accessories and "Toyota Parts" | "Toyota Accessories" | 1stToyotaParts.com - might be expensive and may not have too many RHD parts? And lastly, ebay is an option.

Hope that helps a bit at least.

On a different note - thanks to the previous posters for the props on my rig - not much to put in an update, but I think an anniversary post is about due....

Thanks gents,

Had thought to go to repco/supercheap, but the customer wants to avoid this if possible, genuine is best as i keep telling everyone:). Will try those other web sites though, thanks again.

Cheers
Andrew

Gary. Tried to pm you, but your box is full. My BJ42LX is coming along. Have my heater all apart. While flushing I found a bad heater valve and a small leak in the core so both are on order. Complete rebuild like you did underway.

Quick question. What is that sticker below the main transfer sticker on the pocket door?

Hi mate, it is not a sticker - somewhere in her life someone had stuck something on the pocket door and taken it off again - just some discolouration of the paint work as a result.

My Silver Star membership has been renewed so PM's will work. I replied to your PM - your truck is looking very sweet. You want to check the angle of your AC, it's sitting a bit too vertical and should have a bracket at the back that bolts to the firewall.

Cheers
Gary

Quick update...

Well, it has been a few months since I updated the thread. And fortunately/unfortunately I have no great exciting news :meh:

The only thing I have done to my oxwagon in recent months is add a TomTom, a Hula girl (as you do), and drive her around :) Oh, and I did get her a stable mate to keep her company....a bit of a hoon toy that saves her from having to sit in commute traffic

She's coming up to 275 000 km's soon so I'll be doing the oils, maybe a little spit and polish. Also planning to get the front OEM bumper coated although I'm in two minds about taking the monster bar and brush guards off (I like the protection), need to polish up the throttle knob, and go around with some rust preventer stuff.

Got a new camera so I can get some pics again. Thanks for reading and to all the great folks on MUD for the awesome community - wish you everything for 2012 that you wish for yourselves

Cheers Theo

I'll be keeping my eye out for her in Brisbane mate. Nothing wrong with commuting in this fine town in a '40 ;)

I'll keep a look out for you too - I'm on the north side, I think you are more or less in my neck of the woods? And with these roads we almost need a 40 to commute :bang: I'm often airborne on the motard after tripping over a dent or bump in the tarmac :whoops:

I'm up Mt Nebo and commute daily into the Valley. I often wish for a motorbike (one as nice as yours would more than suffice) to get through the traffic but I do appreciate driving my '40. 'Sneaky' on this forum has noticed Dora and me driving through The Gap, it seems ;) Anyway, if you're not already on there, a Facebook page "40 Series Landcruiser Owners" caters especially for us Aussie vicitims of 40 series lust. Take care, and again - nice rig!!

I'm sure your new mate for your truck has some insecurities with all the love she has been getting. Great truck- we should start a BJ LX club or something. I only I could magically transport to the other side of the world with my yellow gal.

Just a little update - nothing big or difficult - but trying to keep the diary of stuff up to date :-)

My driver-side door handle is a cheapie aftermarket replacement that the PO did - he did tell me when I got her - so I'll be looking for an OEM part sometime soon. As many other cheap aftermarket bits, it broke! The main hinge pin came out of it's hole, notice how it droops on the right hand side:

So, following Tom's excellent thread - https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/370889-tackling-doors.html - I removed the trim. At first I did not believe Tom's trick with the cloth and the window winder - but it worked beautifully:

And had to remove the handle from the inside:

While the trim was off I had a check inside the door - PO said he did regularly give it a spray with oil/diesel mix to stop the rust. Thank goodness for that - the brown you see at the bottom is just red dust. So I scraped, brushed, vacuumed, and blew it out. Before putting it back together I gave it a liberal coating of cavity wax, making sure that the drainage holes at the bottom were clear - should be good for a few more years:

When I fitted the radio I left some extra length on the speaker wires, so now was a good time to get rid of the old and run the new wires right to the speaker. Added a couple of rubber grommets to the holes as well:

Also adjusted, cleaned, lubed the lock and latch mechanisms - door closes like a new one now. Really need to get new door rubbers but they are expensive :meh: And soon going to replace the speakers in the doors - then I'll do the same for the passenger side.

Looking good Gary. I have mine up for sale on eBay now I'm complete with the restoration. May get brought back to her homeland if one of your island mates take her. . I have a feeling I'm going to regret it big time.

Hey mate, funny but I did see it listed this morning and it looks like an awesome resto - wish I could afford another one right now but I am told it is illegal to sell my kids :meh:

I searched for mine for years - no way I'd sell her - ever! But best of luck on the sale.
