Awesome work Gary, you've put lots of work into the little pieces. The interior looks incredible!
Your sooo right about these being enjoyable to tinker with. Whether it's pulling them apart and putting them back together with a lick of paint, or just finding one of those hard to get OEM parts...it's all about the experience. Driving it regularly completes the picture. :D

I keep resisting doing to my FJ40 LX what you did to your BJ42 LX because I really want a BJ42 LX. Yours looks fantastic!:clap:

Cheers,

Josh

Pure porn ! :D

Great work Gary.

Nothing beats the feeling of having a piece clean of dirt and grime, ready to be put back into the truck.

a fellow bj42 lx owner :)
does your aircon still crank?

A/C is icy cold :D and nothing beats the three wipers :)

It is the other electrical gremlins that are doing me in at the minute. Plumbed in a mechanical oil pressure gauge today (bought at repco BTW) - just a cheapie for now - and put in a T to keep the stock sender too. Pleased to report that the mechanical gauge tells me my oil pressure is within spec, that stock electric gauge is a dirty liar.

Gary, that's one speccy FJ you've got mate! Great work on fixing all the gremlins - I'm not looking forward to finding the ones in my FJ...

Lookin good there Gary!

So you say the A/C is ice cold- that wouldn't happen to be because its winter would it? Just askin because as you know its summer up here and- well mine is less than icy to say the least. its about 34c (93f) here today and very humid. The A/C does manage to dry the air in the car but I often debate whether I might be better off with the windows open instead. A/c wins every time but I sure wouldn't mind if it was colder.

In your restoration of the A/C system was there anything in particular that you found/cleaned/ did that you think may have had an affect on the working condition of the unit?

Best!

Thanks Pete and Gruntled. Not sure we have a winter here in Brisbane :-)

The PO had the A/C fixed up as part of the purchase deal, so it really has been blowing nice and cold since I got her. Actually used it a few times in December/January when it was stinking hot.

AFAIK the only thing he did was have it checked and filled. I did not do much to the A/C except clean it comprehensively - cleared out and straightened the vanes on the cooler unit, stripped and cleaned the fans and the plastic housing, new rubber mats inside the housing and replaced the foam on the vents. Now at least the air blows where the vents direct it. Sorry could not be more help than that Pete.

Well I think mine needs to be filled a bit but damn that gas is $$$ here. I'll pull it apart one of these days and get ti all cleaned up. Better than nothing for sure but barely.

Yeah I guess Brisbane stays pretty warm huh.

Best!

Pete

Gary,

Can you do us a favour?

Can you disconnect you a/c at the lead going through the firewall and connecting to the compressor? I want to know if the inside unit still turns on.

I'm having troubles getting mine started, I think that the fan needs to be running also?

Thanks,
Dan

funny, i have also the same issue, a/c is not charged yet. but all connectors inside are connected... A/C blower doesnt work, nothing happens when i slide the fan speed knob.

should that one turn off automatically when the A/c is not charged/ filled? or in other words, does the fan has to work, even when the system is not charged? hope so, otherwise theres something not working as it should...:meh:

Sorry Dan, Folkert, just got back to this.

Folkert - with my truck ignition set to "ON" the A/C fan works. If I set the "TEMP" slider to the OFF position it blows strong, sliding the "TEMP" slider to the COOL position then the fan is marginally slower. Not sure what that means - but if there is any other testing you'd like me to do just shout.

Dan - Not sure I fully understand what you would like me to check. But if I disconnect the three-pin connector that goes through the firewall then the A/C fan does not work, no. I left the ignition in the "ON" position and when I plugged the connector back I heard a click come from the A/C unit - so I guess it drives the relay perhaps?

If there is anything else I can test, wire to disconnect to simulate a discharged system or something just shout, happy to help.

hi gary, thanks for the insight,... surely the answer I wasnt hoping for haha.
A/C is not a priority right now, but will return with questions when I get to that..
hopefully its just a fuse and not a broken fan motor.. will have to figure out how I can problemshoot this one.:D

Gary,

I'll have to check mine again, I've only got one lead that goes through the firewall (behind the ignition) and it looks like it would connect to the compressor?

Cheers mate

Dan

Hey Dan,
I've got a complete A/C unit in the garage that I picked for a mate (just waiting for the pulley before I box it up for him). So I can get a pics of the wiring if you like? When I pulled it from the donor truck, there is a connector that connects behind the ignition and there is a connector on the engine side that connects to the compressor. I am not sure if it is a direct "bridge" through the firewall or if some other wires are connected into it somehow.
