Gambler 2024- this time I bought a Toyota.

also been having a slight problem with this think dying when I’m coasting to a stoplight. Engine idles rough and dies. Then starts right up. Seems to be worse when it’s not warmed up all the way. Don’t die if I give it a bit of gas. Other times it’s completely fine. Maybe choke is stuck? Adjust the throttle cable a bit? Actually clean the carb? What do you guys think. I’m gonna just drive it for now. It’s just trying to be like the new cars that cut out when they stop and start back up again when the light turns green. Gas saver

Depends on which vacuum setup and year carb is on it. The carbs would have a problem at warmup around 167 degrees iirc that when the TVSV switched over it could stall. Easiest fix is to take the idle mixture screw back to 2.5 turns and reset the idle speed the way they came from the factory for emissions but then they don’t idle as smooth.

this makes sense. it starts fine and runs fine cold, then kinda crappy when its in the middle and then just fine once its warmed up all the way. cold weather does weird things to cars.

i think the easiest fix is to just do nothing and learn to drive with one foot on the gas to keep it idling and left foot braking or maybe some fancy heel toe actions

I would make sure you have good plugs and no vacuum leaks.

Carb icing? Happens most often above freezing temps 35-60f. Humidity turns to ice inside the carb at the Venturi.

Make sure the vacuum line is connected (and in good condition) to the carb heat valve on top and at the end of the air filter housing/inlet and the tube going down to the exhaust manifold attaching to the aluminum cover around the exhaust manifold.

add another thing to make this s***box even more sketch. now the ignition switch is wearing out and it takes finding the sweet spot to get this thing to start. who knows how to hotwire a old pickup

does it have a column lock?
you would still need the key to turn and unlock the column

if it is set up like a Landcruiser, pull the clamshell off and post a pic

very basics are power coming to the switch
you need power in the run position
and power to the start position to turn the starter and then disconnect

If you can disengage the steering lock permanently then the ignition power can be accomplished with two switches; one non-momentary for IGN and one momentary for Start.

Have a new key made from best key you have. All vehicles around 1986 had a Hide-a-Key on the frame that was not used very often and a tube of Blistex.
I think it was required back then.
It is common for the key to wear out before the ignition sw pins and a new cut key was cheaper to try first.

well now the battery is dead. I forget that old cars dont always tell you when you leave the headlights on all day whoops.

Yes, it has a column lock. A lot of times at this age it doesn’t work or a least not consistently. The passenger door cylinder on at least older Toyotas had the key code printed on it. A really good locksmith can look at your key and figure out the key code. I remember those hide a key magnetic boxes, real popular back then to buy and have. I’m in the middle of a new key cylinder and ignition switch on our 87 that’s apart of you wanna take a look.

FYI the electrical ignition switch I purchased from Rock for it was about $14 shipped. Just take the column cover off carefully as it’s brittle at this stage and you can easily access it.

its amazing what trickle charging the battery overnight, using a new key, and a bottle of HEET will do to an old pickup. think it defiantly got some bad fuel or water in the lines and the new key trick worked. so happy i didnt try and mess with the hot wiring idiot idea i had

Downhill with a tail wind. On studded snow tires, with all that stuff piled in the back. Had to be getting close to the Rev limit. New 22r land speed record ?

Weight is the enemy, until it becomes friendly.
To meet the enemy, turn around, go up the hill, with a headwind! 😀
