Well, here is the donor truck. 1994 4Runner, 22re engine (gone) and G58 transmission with transfer case, driveshafts, and all the bits and pieces required to make my Lux a 5 speed. With a little modding of course, but that's the fun part! I'll keep you posted on the progress, lots of pictures I promise.

I see you are in Canada. And, I see that Marlin does say the G58 ran until 1995 (with a chain drive TC). But, you sure it doesn't have a W56?

Ya I thought all 22RE's got W56-series trans. Might check again. What's on the tag on the firewall?

That's what I thought too, but when I checked the door panel it said it was the g58

So I removed the 5 spd this last Thursday, I started by removing the center console, rubber shifter boots and uncovering the tranny from the top. Once this was done we lifted up the left side of the 4runner using a forklift, then proceeded to attach ratchet straps from the trailer to the frame to ensure the truck was secure. I also made sure to shake it profusely every time I went under and adjusted the straps and forks accordingly.

Just a bottom view of the tranny, doesn't look too rusty.
Both the front and rear driveshafts were pretty badly dented, but we have to make custom ones anyway.

Of course a big storm started to roll in, after about 10 minutes of seeing that cloud it was rain and hail and crazy winds.
Once I zipped the rear driveshaft and the crossmember bolts were removed, the tranny was just kind of hanging there on the front driveshaft.

I ended up having to remove the shifters, they were catching on the floor of the body and prevented the tranny from coming loose. I also finished removing the rest of the rear driveshaft, I have to keep the joint flanges for modding later.
A view of the bell-housing pushing up against the body.

The inside looked pretty clean, and all of the fluid that came out was decent too. I'm optimistic!
It was at this time it was discovered that the front driveshaft was completely seized, the shaft refused to come out of the sleeve. A large ratchet strap and a floor jack was used to try and remove it, but no such luck.

Just a different view on our attempt to remove the tranny.
Eventually we ran a ratchet strap (yes many were used) around the whole body and tranny. With it supported, I used the zip disc to cut off the front driveshaft. It was still a little scary under there knowing that by cutting the shaft I was removing the main support of several hundred pounds. Once again, a ratchet strap was used to make sure I wasn't squashed.
Once the tranny was out I re-installed the shifters. At one point the c clip flew off and obviously I panicked because I didn't have the slightest clue where it went. My boss Wayne from Crushers Rule Inc. started laughing as I searched until finally I saw that the clip had landed on it's ended right between a wire and the tranny, what a fluke.

The rusty, empty underside.
And finally, about 6 hours later the g58 transmission completely separated from the donor. Say hello to your new owner!

The next morning the donor 4runner was set on some tires, as a temporary thing.
Wayne's 1996 ford f250 powerstroke, pulled the 4 runner like it wasn't there. Has a little more grunt than the 20r that's for sure.

That's all for now, I will have more updates once I plan out then start the replacement of the L43 with the G58. Cheers!

Geez it sure seems like you did that the hard way. 6 hours?

Seems like you could've stabbed the fork lift through the windows and lifted the truck straight up, unbolt the driveshafts, unbolt the crossmember, out it falls.

Guess ya had to be there...

I see what you mean, the thing is I didn't buy the whole truck, I just bought the tranny so I wanted to try and limit the damage. The bolts on the front and rear driveshafts were pretty hard to get to and crazy tight. The ones on the back were okay but the ones on the front were pretty much impossible to get off because of the weight of the tranny. Thanks for you comment!
