I was happy to find a set of Tundra wheels in 17, but seems less than ideal now.
Also, Camptech on yours? i made contact with Eric for my previous 80 but had to let it go. I think this one will be worthy.

Hey Man - Recommend keeping the Tundra Steelies as the 17" wheel opens up alot of tire options, like 285/75r17 (34"). Taller than the 255 and ~11" wide with AT options. Best of both worlds. 1" quality spacers like Spidertrax would do the trick. You could always upgrade wheels down the road and ditch the spacers. This will be my next size when 35's wear out. Nitto makes a 35/10.5r17 MT which is another solid choice.

Yes, had a Campteq with roof delete for a longtime (#3). Recommend Erics' work highly! Sold it in favor of a Alucab on our new build as the extra 10" width was needed to keep the GF happy on long trips

My set up:
Falken Wildpeak AT3W 265/70R17
2011-2014 FJ Cruiser/2010-2013 4runner trail edition wheels
Great tire, great price. Go anywhere, do anything. Never been a fan of oversized tires.

If mud is the priority and road manners not so much, look at Q78-16 tires. 36x9.5. Super Swampers still sell that size. There used to be “Grip Spurs” (sold at co-ops) and Buckshot Mudders in that size.

I wish just to try. I wanted to try out the Narrow

I wish. It’s just a lot of work to fit tires in that size. I’m at stock height on new shocks. I think the Narrow TSL would fit at that height, should be around 33x9.5 mounted. Narrow TSL

The best tire for mud and rocks given the weight of the vehicle is a 33” skinny. The BFG’s are amazing. given the pounds per square inch skinnies are hard to beat! With that said...

1. the road noise of the BFG’s on the road is loud! Really loud.
2. they are hard to balance

3. You may consider spacers to widen the stance and prevent roll.

I 1.25” Spacers all around for aesthetics and it did help prevent roll incidentally.

I run 35” Cooper STT Pros today and really like them but I must say the 255/85r16 is a beast of a tire!!

Are you referring to the BFG KM2? Or KM3? Seems the KM3 is livable. I like the Cooper ST, seems ok, but I was wanting to try something a little more new to me. Never had an M/T. I started this thread to see if anyone had mounted Nankang Mudstars in 235/85r16 on the stock rim since their docs says 8 inch rim is ok, or the Narrow TSL. I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE LOOKS, really. That can be addressed later if I like the size

Cool. Now we talking. I like that feedback!

just be aware the Bias ply tires will ride like square wheels for a couple miles when it's cold. They will also be a pain to balance. I have had dozens of sets of the co-op grip spurs and they wear like IRON....ride like it too...

I forgot to tell you which tire, I was referring to KM2’s.

I have the Cooper Discoverer S/T in the 255/85 R16. They have been fine, but need to be replaced after only 20K. Their performance hasn’t been bad, but not so great to offset the short lifespan.

Wow 20k seems really low. Others go to 40k and still have enough to sell what’s left on CL. If you’re in Arizona, do you think the heat has something to do with it, or the rocky trails? Only drove through it, but that pavement was scorching.

No clue, but I’m pretty sure the heat doesn’t help.

Oh....didn't want to hear that. Getting ready to put a set of 285/75-16's on my 97 in another month or so. Was hoping to get more mileage out of them than 20K.

Don’t confuse these with the ST Maxx line. One thing I hate about Cooper is their confusing and overlapping tire names. They have Discoverer ST, Discoverer S/T and then through in some with maxx.
I just put some Discoverer AT3 LT tires on my 4Runner. I’m hoping to get something close to the 60k rating. I can’t find a mileage rating for the Discoverer S/T 255/85 R16 I’m running on my Land Cruiser. It may be they are just soft and I didn’t do my due diligence when I bought them.

I have Cooper st max 255/85/16. They are severley cupped and worn unevenly at less than 30k miles. I've had a ton of fun with them though! I may have some suspension issues contributing to the premature wear.
I want to go up a size or two and wish there were more skinny options in the larger sizes.

Ahhhh....gotcha. The 'Maxx' is what I am looking at. Thanks for making the distinction.

I‘m going to stick with the 16x6 or 16x7 instead of going to a 17 Tundra wheel. Would know where to get the best price on the 42601-60262-03 16x6 wheel? Cheapest I found is around $145 a wheel. Seems that wheel is true and tested, I plan on removing flares.

Offset can vary by year, some of these will work.

thanks, I made contact with the seller earlier this week for this one (2nd one down): Tacoma rims 2005 and up
it should be a 16x7, 6x5.5, but I can‘t find that anyone is running those on an 80, so I didn’t push further. not sure if it fits at all.

My spare tire is on that exact wheel and I can verify that they fit over the front and rear brakes of an 80. They sit quite a bit "inboard" compared to stock, but they fit.

:edit: In fact, I think I still have a couple in the garage I need to get rid of.

Cool! What size swamper is that? Would you trust that wheel as your primary instead of a spare?
