So glad you posted this!

MUD members take note of this! Toyota in late 78 or early 1979, in a bid to make things cheaper to manufacture, OR to increase the reliability of the wiring harness in the FJ40, take your choice, changed the fuse panel to a direct wire connection getting rid of the three nylon plugs on the back of the fuse panel. This would eliminate a possible place for a bad connection to develop especially on the higher current circuits. It does however make it harder to replace a broken or melted fuse panel...

Regardless of why they did it, at the same time they got rid of the ability to easily add a circuit. The older panels had accessory terminals on the back that would accept standard 6.3mm female spade lugs making it easy to add a couple of circuits. Not knowing this I built a Fog Light Harness and was counting on those terminals being there... Schooled again.... I have added this to my collection also...

My solution is this gizmo: Nothing new, been around for years... I will be stocking these in the near future....

Hey Tom, does the back of your fuse panel look like the above pic ie no connectors with wires crimped straight to the panel?

One of the Unobtainium projects under works now is to bring back the old style fuse panel and cover. Still about a month or so away from market, but here's what the connectors look like.

Since we are on the subject of fuse panels I have a question. The small (20mm?) 5 amp 32V Radio fuse: Does anyone know what type it is? GMA, SFE, MDL, or AGC? The type determines how the fuse behaves such as fast blow or slow blow.
I would think it is an MDL slow blow type so as to be able to handle turn on surges from a radio/amp. If anyone has an original Toyota 5 amp fuse could you look to see what it is? Inquiring minds want to know! Once I know the type I can order some in...

That rocks! Now all you have to do is come up with the three inline nylon connectors that connects to the back! Here is one of them... I can get the terminals just not the housings...IMG_0678.webp

Here's the best pic of the back I can get right now Mark:

Which looks a bit different to Cruiser804's 1979 fuseblock

(And I think he's holding his upside-down.)

PS. The bullet connectors on mine look like the work of yours truly (me).

Can you tell just by looking at it Mark?

Here's my radio fuse and I can't remember ever replacing it:

The only things it says on it are "PACIFIC" and "5A"

Tom those pics are perfect! It confirms that Toyota changed the fuse panel in 1979 to NOT have plug in connections on the back.

Another interesting thing about the OEM fuses. They were made by Pacific now known as PEC Pacific Engineering Corp. https://www.pecj.co.jp/en/fuse/glass/glass.html

I had often wondered where the odd colored element fuses came from that I see in FJ40

fuse panels I have bought off E-Bay. Now I know! I have sent them an email asking if they have distributors here in the US that sell the GLTF sytle fuses, but have not heard back yet. (They have one distributor in California but their web site does not list fuses.)

If I can source these I will put them on my web site. For your information Green = 20 Amp, Blue = 15 Amp, Yellow = 10 Amp and Brown = 5 Amp...

Can someone with a 1978 U.S. market FJ40 please post a phone pic of your fuse box cover? I just want to confirm if it's identical to the one for the General Market. Thanks!
See posts 13 and 8. Unless you mean a 1978 manufacture date...

I have a 12/77 Federal model '78 with a pretty good cover. I've got to get to it to take some pics...do you want me to send it to you? I'm down for a while, putting the motor back together and the front end back on. Let me know, I'll be glad to send it in to you!

Skip

Yes, that'd be great! After thinking about it some more, I plan to make that cover.
