My 80 is eating those darn springs to the tune of one every few months. It's one of those little things that makes me nuts. They are only a few bucks, but they are special order, so it's always a PITA to deal with. Today I ordered two so I can just toss it in my tool bag. Anybody have this problem besides me? Could the pull cable need adjustments of some kind? I need to go take a look at my Sequia and see if it's the same spring.

When I first got my 80 over 5 years ago the spring was busted, needed two people to get the damn door open. A friend messing around stuck the spring from a biro or whatever in there, been there since and forgot all about it, get you a pic later if you like?

regards

Dave

When I bought my 97, it was missing the spring, when I picked up my 92 last weekend it was also missing the spring. I think it's is now part of my ritual when buying cruisers.

To make it a one man job to open the gas cap, stuff something in the edge of the gas door, then go pull the release cable.

one of those blue disposable shop racks on the rolls folded up into a small square then placed on the spring side of the door works just fine. once it's in place for a month or so it forms into place and stays there when the door is open. it will pop the door open about half as far as the oem spring will. i go through oem springs about once a year on the my 93 and am never really in a hurry to replace them. the last rag spring was in service close to a year.

I'm little OCD, plus I'm 6'7" and 250 pounds. It usually scares people at the gas station when I ask them for help. They think I'm going to stuff the in the cruiser I guess. I'd like to see a pic of that alternate spring.

First 'proper' rain we have had for a couple of years, you will have to wait until tomorrow....ish I'm afraid. Been raining for around 20 hours now so should run itself out soon.

Bringing this back from the dead.
I went to put fuel into my LX450 and the little spring for the fuel door vanished. I came up with what should be a fairly permanent and robust solution using a cheap stainless steel hose clamp section.

I'm just jealous that you have a holder for the gas cap. I place mine on the unused rear antenna mount.
But even my parts truck didn't have one :meh:

I'll admit, my first thought was to ground my igniter, but this works just as well.

Now THAT's some funny sh** right there!

My brother used a spring clip from his gutter guards on his house gutters to fix his avalon same design works perfect. Gave me a couple in case mine breaks

You know @jonheld those springs only cost about $2 from your favorite toyota parts dealer...I hear there is a good one in NY now.

You know how much I like to keep my truck OEM. I'll wind up ordering a few from him, but I needed a quick solution. She does enjoy the gasoline.

when I first got my 80 my spting was missing...i got real tired of stuffing my keys in the edge of the fuel door to make it pop open when the lat h was released...I feel ya!

I stole one from a 98 Corolla for my 91. I'm gonna add that to the list with prop rods to grab when I go to the junk yard (which reminds me, the prop rod from the same Corolla works fine on the 80).

Sometimes I just think about parts and they magically show up at my door...
Pretty awesome.
