Its going to a warm one....Fossil Springs is roughly the same elevation as Camp Verde 3300'. Weekend temps 99* high and 70* low

Sunday we will be hiking down to the falls if anyone is interested. Its about a mile hike with little to no elevation gain. The trail starts just up the road about 2 miles from the camp site.

Howdy! Yup, We're in for the hike to:cool: Phil's Phalls. My copilot :princess:gets to pick the entertainment once in a while. :D Should be fun. John

Howdy! Might want to give yourselves a little extra travel time going up on Saturday morning. You may have heard about the traffic fiasco that AZDOT managed to create on Labor Day Weekend. Some folks were stuck for hours!! I clipped the following info from a friend in another club.

Bridge project on State Route 87 to restrict travel lanes

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will resume roadway
improvements on State Route 87 at the Bush Highway on Monday September 10.
The project consists of constructing a traffic interchange linking SR 87
and the Bush Highway, also known as the Saguaro Lake Turnoff. The project will
also widen approximately eight miles of shoulders providing additional
safety for motorists.

Monday's work will involve placement of concrete barriers to establish the
work zone. The roadway will be reduced to one lane in each direction until
September 21 for barrier placement and truck hauls. The restrictions for
northbound traffic will continue until summer 2008. The speed limit will
be reduced for the duration of the project.

The work will resume activities that recently inconvenienced many
motorists traveling the SR 87 during the Labor Day Weekend. ADOT regrets the
inconvenience that the public experienced and has revised plans to
establish the work zone in an effort to reduce the impacts to travelers.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed with caution, obey all posted speed limit
signs, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Road conditions and up-to-date restrictions can be found by dialing 511 or
going online to www.az511.com.

It might be worth going up to camp on Friday night. John

Still not quite clear on the exact location of the meeting location at this infamous "camp spot" (not having been up there before...), or the basic directions for getting in there

x2

This will be my first trip there as well. Directions from Prescott/PV?

260 east out of Camp Verde. I assume you can get there from Prescott. take the 260 E approximately 1 mile outside of Camp Verde to the Fossil Springs road turnoff. Right onto Fossil Springs Rd (I believe it's marked) take Fossil Springs road south/southeast to camp site. I have no guess by road how far this actually is because of the twists and turns. But I'd say it's at least 8 miles from what i remember when driving out this way in '05. It's a really nice shelf road with little or no traffic. I'd guess 1/2 hour to 45 minutes drive time from the 260 to the camp. The camp is approx.5 miles west of the bridge crossing over Fossil Creek. The turnoff to camp will be on your right approx 400 yards past the NF-90 turnoff on your left, if you are traveling east on fossil springs road. There is a break in the barbed wire fence on the south side of the road. Assuming Phil or I get there before you it will be marked with CSC paper plate. You will travel southwest across 2 small open (pasture type) areas to the campsite.

From the turn off Hwy 260 on to FR708 aka Fossil Springs road it is about 14 miles.

If you enter from Strawberry side (a better choice for the east valley) it is 11 1/2 miles (not all dirt) to camp. From the main intersection of Strawberry take the paved road west through the residential area it will turn to dirt after a few miles and continue to the camp site.

Howdy! I will have more than enough garbage bags for everyone, if the FS does not supply any. Will they collect all the bags down by the creek, or do we have to bring them back to PX? John

Sorry, I have been way busy with work this week!:o

A couple of maps, first from the east. The road that you turn off of 87 on, IIRC is called Fossil Springs Rd, FS708? It takes you to the camp, there is only one Y, stay on 708, 428 takes you back to Pine, 87.

From the west, get off 17 in Camp Verde, take 260 east to 708.

The camp is about .6 mi west of the bridge, south of the road, IIRC close to the power lines? If you can't find it just hangout close to the bridge and you will see cruisers soon! The star on these maps is close to the spot? The whole map can be viewed here;

They will collect bags on their trailer.

... The FS has a trailer to haul one vehicle out. ...

... So, I'll also have our 1-ton 4x8 open trailer. It's heavy duty, and has good clearance. I'll plan on bringing it along, unless I hear it's not needed before Thursday afternoon, when we head north...

Tom

Looks like the FS is bringing a big trailer, so we probably don't need more than maybe one more?

Is there any more info on the Sunday run for those who can't make it out there on Saturday?

From what I hear there is no wheeling in the area where we are camping? I'm thinking of running the south road in and out of Sunflower mine on the way home? Other ideas, thoughts?

No wheeling? .......At all?

Were we all just meeting up and walking on this trail with trash bags? How does this trail cleanup stuff work?

There are some roads in the area, but from what I hear they are easy.

It's a way scenic area, so walking around checking it out is cool. Nice relatively large creek with springs flowing into it, some from up on the cliff, causing waterfalls. Yes Saturday will be mostly walking around picking up trash in a scenic area, with a barbeque lunch, raffle and hanging with cruiser buddies. Sunday we will do a trail run, there is some stuff in the Payson area, or south of there is Sunflower mine.

I would like to take part in this event. Nothing burns me up more than trash strewn about.

This weekend both diffs will be out of my DD for 4.88's and ARBs though. I will be working frantically to make sure I can get to my job monday morning.

I will see you all at the next cleanup though. Be safe.

Ok now I am confused :)
On previous post it was mentioned that the raffle / lunch would be on sunday..
if it is sat that is great since I can only be there on Sat
I have a winch on my FJC ,gloves and lots of other stuff...plus a healthy 16yr son to haul stuff :)
So put me on the list and see ya no matter what happens when...but I would still like to know :)

Oh yeah anyone going up Sat am? Whanna convoy?
I am central phx and still looking at what route to take since there is the 87 construction.
Radio channels cb/ham to find the meet spot?

I plan to be along. I recently removed a large redwood deck. I have lots of wood. I will cut some up and bring along to cut down on foraging for firewood. Anything that we don't use can be stacked for future campers.
There is a guy in Prescott Valley who has made a living for 25 years by cleaning up sites in the Bradshaws and on Mingus Mtn. More lately, he cleans up the towns around here. He collects and recycles material. He can use any metal that won't stick to a magnet. A guy like him is valuable, and I like to make sure that he can make a living.
I will bring bags for aluminum cans and a trailer to take back any stainless, copper and such that we find. It will all be recycled.

great idea clean up & recycle day all in 1
thanks for taking the effort to bring wood and take back stuff for him

I will be meeting with the team early Sat morning and cruising up 87. Probably meet at Baja, but the time isn’t determined yet.

Robbie (powderpig) IIRC from the central team will be attending.
