Man, I am wanting something exactly like that for DD duties. I have the money saved up for it, but trying to get a few things sorted first. Hopefully something like this pops back up in a few months.

Phil and I have a coworker that is looking for an FZJ80 with lockers. He wants it specifically for wheeling, so it doesn't need to be in perfect condition. He also likes working on cars, so he's not terribly concerned if it has to be towed back to Charleston or if it can be driven.

How about this one. Seems like a decent deal. Plus it's blue.

There was a green one in greenville with lockers for 5k I think but can't find it anymore.

My landlord just bought a locked one with 250k on the clock for 3500. Runs and looks great. So deals are out there.

So he bought an 80? That was fast. He was just talking about it at Black Balsam.

There are a few good 80's out there! I just gotta get him out to have a look at them. There's a pretty nice black one here in town that is listed on Craigslist - lower miles than mine. I'm tempted to buy a 2nd 80 with factory lockers and move the axles and harness over to mine. After watching the ONSC guys with factory lockers roll up Dickey Bell with ease I was pretty jealous...

I'd sell mine.

What about the one I linked for sale in ?

I'm sure I'll draw some hate for this, but if he finds a good deal that's unlocked and in good shape, buy it. That's what I did. $2000 and you have ARBs which are arguably more versatile and reliable. That's what I'm doing.

Some folks would say the factory lockers aren't worth all the hype. I would fall into that camp myself. If you regear they can be a pain. And if he is planning on really using it in the dirt then I would find a solid rig and throw a lunchbox or a Detroit in the rear and see how far that gets him. Then throw a selectable up front when he gets to the point of needing it.

If you plan on running larger than 35" factory rear lockers will fail in grand fashion. I would do the ARB thing too if I could to it all over again.

My 80 has open/open diffs (well, at least until I get this Aussie resolved). I've had some trouble in a few spots that folks with factory lockers had no trouble with. I'm not sure what type of wheeling Mark intends to do - in fact he's not sure what he plans to do either! For now, he just wants to ride with Phil and I on the UC trips and at Uwharrie and tinker with the engine on the weekends. There's an unlocked '97 for sale here locally that has caught his eye. The asking price is a little steep, but I think we're going to drop by and check it out this week. I think this will give him a better idea of what he really wants…

I have said this to others and feel it is sound advice. If you find a good solid rig for a good price then I would go for it. Lockers or not would not be a deal breaker, more of a bonus in my opinion. If he wants to go hard I stand by my thoughts that a Detroit or grizzly in the rear would be a much better option unless he plans on DD'ing it. Good luck, look forward to seeing him out on the trails soon.
