I'm living in Cabo San Lucas Mexico and have an FJ62 which I'm rebuilding mechanically to cruise the remote areas of the Baja. I'm doing everything I can to make sure the truck is solid and won't have any issues but since I'm new to Land Cruisers I wanted to get some advice on must have backup parts that might typically breakdown on the FJ62's? Belts, thermostat etc.. Any advice would be great so I can pack these for the trip since getting parts in Mexico is already a challenge. Thanks for the help!

How many miles on the 62? The tranny is certainly a weak point - not that you'll want to throw a spare in the back but make sure you have it serviced before heading off. They seem to need rebuilding anywhere from 150k on out (ours was rebuilt at 165k)

Consider and alternator, belts, T-stat, (assorted fluids) - for a start

Spare fan clutch, lots of tools, install a transmission cooler before you go. Have a plan B - someone with a truck who can rescue you if things get very sideways.

Excellent tire repair kit is probably #3 on your list (after gasolina #1 and agua #2). Then that makes a reliable air pump to fill tires #4.
I have driven everywhere in Baja. 20 years of exploring in my FJ60.

Along with that compressor and repair kit, take a mid gauge rachet strap. You put it around the tire circumf, and it will push tire up onto bead so you can re-seat it with just the compressor if it has come off the rim.

a nice compression tie rod end puller, and a spare end.

a plate/wood to cover front diffy opening if you have to drive it without front DS / axle.

a bar of hard soap to repair small holes in gas tank/ oil pan, and some 2 part epoxy for larger holes. If you get PC-11, you can also use that to repair chips in tubs and sink porcelain.

Old panty hose can be used for emergency belts, for you or other travelers.

Old drapery cord is used to reseat leaking gaskets in mainland Mexico.

Small metric tap and die set, and ez outs. Irwin makes a stripped bolt grabbing set that is sweet too. When you order parts, order some extra 10,12,13,14,17, and fan bolts. Toyota bolts have tapers on most of them, and make life much simpler if you do strip stuff out.

Starter contact set, cheap and easy, and fixes most starter probs.

Alligator and battery clips, and some wire, for one person electric testing.

Jump and Go remote battery charger, is what the pro's use. With a good solar panel, very handy around camp too. Do the 62's have the alt charger keyway in the front of the grill ?
You should look, and learn how to use it.

Fuses and water pump.

Dont ask how I know.

Spare bleeder zerk for brake or clutch. Crush washer for oil pan drain, and one for gas tank drain. Aluminum foil for making funnels.
Extra vac line, and a piece of brake line, flare and cap for one end, and rubber hose and 4 clamps for other. Spare front brake hose.
Extra hose clamp for rad hose, and an old hose if have one, especially bottom one.
Couple c clips for holding front hub in. Rear brake rebuild kit w spring and that little hold on washer.
Brake light bulbs. Alternator diode. fuses.
wiper blade. tire valve.
sandpaper and a file. Hacksaw blade w/holder. Cheesecloth, coffee filter, and piece of screen for straining/cleaning. Whiteout pen for marking vac lines and part mounting points.
Any old carb parts and jets you have around. HEET/alcohol for water in gas. Spare fuel pump.

exhaust bag jack to get out of sand before tide comes in, and some extra carpet for traction, nice to have in front of tent too.

Telescopic magnetic pickup, invaluable for finding small clips and screws dropped on the ground too. Baling wire and plumbers tape.
Instamorph-moldable plastic, to make parts and handles. Glue gun, and gorilla glue sticks can waterproof stuff, seal next to windows, and fix torn tents.
Couple sheets of diff gasket materials, and an Xacto knife. Welding rods, can use as trade for welding services too.

Copies of title, passport, and drivers license, ziplocked and stashed in different parts of truck, so identity is in vehicle in case stolen, you can still prove its yours.

You know that there is masterkey possible (and known in Mexico)for older Toyota's right? Those old steering wheel locks still have some use for us.
Interior cable locks thru major eqpt may be a good investment, if you will be out hiking, fishing etc. Put in a couple eye bolts in corners and by wheel wells.

Please elaborate on cable locks and eye bolts applications. Thanx.

I think I will just attach my Baja list. I have a 22RE, which when it comes to spare parts is the same idea. Notables I carry:

Coil/igniter
Belts (I toss in the old ones when I change them out. Same for hoses.)
Hoses
ECU
TPS
Fuses
Knuckle studs/nuts/washers
Driveshaft flange bolts
Fluids
Fuel pump

If you are traveling solo I highly recommend someway to communicate. Don't plan on your cell phone to be of much use. I use a Delorme/Garmin inReach. I swear by it. You could also rent a sat phone.

Start with the basics. Hoses. Belts. Fuel Filter. Thermostat. Make sure your rig is solid to start with. Get a 12 pack of good beer, add a good (whatever you got) set of wrenches and sockets, and start tightening whatever you see. If anything looks iffy, replace it. The Baja don't play, and there's places nobody will drive by for a while. Being prepared starts in the driveway.

Get yourself a fusible link backup!

At least one spare birf and inner snap ring. Better to carry spare front axles too.
