Thanks Comet! So far it’s been pretty simple, but I’ve only set the appointment up. Stealership seems to be ready and willing to help. I’ll post once it’s complete and will discuss OEM pick up and sending units. Thx for the post!

Update (long over due)...I dropped off my FJ60 at the Toyota dealership for the gas tank recall and then went out of town for about 10 days. When I returned I called the dealership and they said to come pick it up, it was done. To my surprise, not only did they replace the gas tank under the recall they replaced several hoses, gaskets, clamps that totaled over $200...at no charge to me. I did have them replace the fuel sending unit for $140 but that was the only cost to me in this entire ordeal. Kudos to Toyota for continuing to back their product! I have 2 more project 60s that I will call to see if the recall ever was performed once they are running! No brainer!

Based on this thread I checked my on the NTSA site and it said recall incomplete. I went to Fred Haas Toyota in Spring Texas today and they checked my VIN and it had not been done. Ordered all the parts for the tank recall and the seat belt recall and are going to call me as soon as they arrive so I can bring it in. Lots of technicians came out to look at the truck. Crazy..1983 truck, recall in 1991, fixed in 2018. This only concerned me because every time I fill up there is a ton of pressure in the tank that is released when I open the fuel cap.

I just tried to get my recall processed at my local dealership. Told me parts have been discontinued and to call Toyota directly. I did spent 30 minutes on the phone with them and they stated that recall was in 91, parts are not made any more and I am basically out of luck. Anyone have an idea how to get this processed or any other options?

Try calling back and talking to someone else. Different personalities will net different results. Offer to send them one of the jpegs from the threads here on mud that show purchase orders.

The tank # for an FJ60 is still available, but not for the FJ62. The number for the FJ60 has changed...it is 77001-60241. When the recall was announced they had a part number for the kit, shown in the pic below. It is no longer available so the dealer has to order all the parts individually. I ran them individually and the are all still available except the three part numbers with an X beside them. Those three part numbers are just fuel line hose so your dealer can simply make those with available hose. Hope that helps...you might want to try another dealer. I went into the dealer straight to the parts counter and had them check avail of the tank using the number above (i already knew it was available) and then I went to the service manager and explained my concern about excessive pressure in the tank every time I took off the gas cap and told them my concern led me to research any recalls. My dealer was so quick to just order the parts that I dont think i needed to do any of that, but after reading a few experiences I wanted to be ready for any push back.....

@John Staton thanks for the information. I think this is what I am going to do. Just go into the dealership with a parts list and have a conversation with them. I should be able to make this work hopefully! I plan on trying to install an intake pump to go with an EFI system, so I wont need all of this any way. If they could just get me the parts and not worry about the installed that would be awesome too!

I might be wrong, but when a dealer addresses a recall they are likely required to do the work themselves for liability reasons. I told them that my back seatbelt was retracting fine and I was not worried about that second recall, but she told me that they would get in trouble if they had my car and did not take care of all the recalls due....I think I got lucky with a good dealer. You might want to carry on about safety concerns and that you know a few fellow cruisers that are getting this done now.

Did they give you anything with the part numbers for the lap belts?

yes...and they are still available. I might be wrong, but I dont think they replace the entire lapbelt, just the cover or guide of some sort. Here is the page with that information as well as the recall page that covers the tank...

There’s a Toyota recall phone number you can call. They looked up the recall for me once I provided the VIN and even scheduled the appointment with the dealership for me while they put me on hold for a minute or so. Pretty easy and not painless for me. Good luck!

Old thread, but thought I'd add some commentary in the event someone else needs this info. According to Toyota Customer Assistance (800-331-4331), my FJ 60 had the recall done by the original owner (I'm 2nd owner) on Mar 30, 1992 at West Side Toyota. The rear seat belt recall has not been performed yet.

Shopping around one can find plenty of OEM tanks, but they range from $650-$1100 at various Toyota dealers - why such an enormous price range? Tack on another $150-$200 for shipping plus whatever tax and you're starting to get near the extended range tank pricing.

In calling around I discovered Gas Tank ReNu Gas Tank Renu | Stop Rust Permanently that will repair and make your OEM (or any) tank better than new and the repair comes with a lifetime warranty. So for about $300 and an hour round-trip to the closest dealer. I'm getting my tank re-nu'd.

I have a quick questions concerning the seatbelts someone may be able to answer. When I got my recall done on the tank and the seatbelts they added the tabs at the top of the rear seat that holds the male end of the belts up when not in use. If you lay your seat down without taking those off you will break the tabs off.....I know, because I did it. Does anyone know the part number of the plastic tabs and/or a place to order them??

I thought they were NLA. There are a bunch of threads about those tabs, unfortunately most of them are titled "What are these?". I'll see if I can find any of them and link them here.

my dealer installed them when I got my new tank back in August.....maybe some still floating around at some dealers....just need the part number. Maybe someone should make them on their 3D printer.

My current rigs tank was replaced on the recall many years ago. But truck sat for many years out in Vegas. I simply removed my tank took it to a paint stripper where they dip your parts in a solution. And it came out really clean. I think I paid $150 to $200!bucks for it. It’s been good so far !

Yeah...get the VIN and make the call...you will know real quick if the recall has been done already or not. I think you can also enter the VIN on the recall website too.
