Hey everyone!

I am about to start a DIY drawer project for my 1986 FJ60 (LHD) with ambulance doors and a standard roof. I’ve decided on a single-side system for the passenger side because I have a door panel table on the other side.
I’m trying to keep this a budget-friendly build and am planning to use 12mm plywood and Teflon (HDPE) bars instead of heavy-duty slides to handle the desert dust and sand.

I was thinking of going with these dimensions:
50cm (w) x 33cm (h) x 95cm (l).

Would love to know if anyone has some Do's and Dont's or some dimension tweaks or anything that I should look out for in the build!

Trying to keep it cheap and DIY friendly!

Seems like a reasonable start. My rear storage system has evolved a lot over the years as I’ve figured out what I want to always have in the truck. There’s a lot of good inspo here if you search around :)

This is my current set up with fridge in on one side and a set of custom boxes on the other. I also built a custom table into the system that I can pull out at camp.

Thats awesome. I was also considering the table idea, seems like the way to go!
By the way, love the two tone. It looks so sick!

Those dimensions look like a great start. You might also consider skipping the drawer altogether and going with some plastic crates that you can slide in. This saves some costs and get you some more space. I use these, they are approximately 30cm high x 50cm long by 40cm wide. I set up my shelf with a divider so I can slide one of these in on each side of the divider. I was able to make my shelf unit universal so it fits my 2021 4Runner and the FJ60.

That's how I did my GX470. I plan on doing the same with the 60. The shelves are completely removable when I don't need them.

Based on your picture, bottom left corner, is it fair to say this was a three Sierra Nevada brewski project :)

Nice! Ive been back and forth so many times between the boxes route or a drawer. The thing is that I would potentially want to fit two boxes behind each other but none of my good boxes fit 2 within the 95cm. The good thing is I can always just remove the drawers and switch to boxes or vice versa! Curious about which mounting points you´ll be using in your FJ60? I havent pulled up the carpeting yet to start looking.

Slightly off topic but we spent some time in Egypt in 2024, loved it. Here is a shot near Luxor on the Nile:

Following this thread as I would like to some sort of easily removable platform. I'm wondering too, though, how you guys are holding your platforms down. I know there are body mount bolts under the carpeting. Have you added D rings or something else?

Yes, I added D rings and then use turnbuckles to hold the system to the truck, one on each corner. Below is a link to the turnbuckles I used.

Thanks. You have any pictures of the D rings installed or wich ones you used?

I’m pretty sure I used these D rings but can’t confirm as my truck is ~2000 miles away right now. Hope this helps.

Such a cool setup! I have the same exact beige Jerrycan in the same spot in my car! Also really cool door panels, did you make them yourself? Going to do the rear door panels soon.
Do you still remember the dimensions by any chance? because the height of your drawer looks great.

I did a DIY setup in my truck when I bought it. 1 big drawer, fridge on the left, 8" sub behind the fridge and a flip top over the storage area on the pass side. It's setup to sleep on top of as I've since added a front section about a year ago with gull-wing style lift up doors with a big storage area underneath. Keeps most all of my gear/tools secured while wheeling. Plenty of headroom to sleep on top comfortably.

Whole thing removes with 4 bolts and can be pulled out the back.

Dimentions on drawers are 42" long x 8.5 high x 18.75" wide the wood on top is 1" thick and the "h extrusion" is about 1/4" but a total of 1/2"high for the slides under the drawers and fridge to slide with no issues all and all about 11 to 12" high in total... if i remember correctly.....
